LINEE GUIDA SUGLI STUDI CONDOTTI PER VALUTARE LA
SICUREZZA E LE PROPRIETA’ DI PRODOTTI ALIMENTARI
Mauro Picardo
Componente CUDN
Istituto Dermatologico San Gallicano, IRCCS, Roma
Premessa
EFSA: Articolo13 health claims
Oggetto degli studi
• Nuovi alimenti• Alimenti addizionati• Alimenti a fini medici speciali• Integratori • Pro biotici• Pre biotici
ESEMPI DI CLAIMS
Verbena officinalis L. (Common name: Common vervain)
Respiratory Health
Soothing for mouth and throat / Reliefs in case of irritation of throat and pharynx / Soothing and pleasant effect on throat, pharynx and vocal cords
Echinacea angustifolia/pallida (Common Name : Echinacea, pale coneflower
Immune health Support of the body´s defence/contributes to the /supports the immune system
Soyfoods Digestibility (people intolerant to lactose)
Naturally lactose free, soyfoods are easier to digest for people intolerant to this carbohydrate
FOODHEALTH
RELATIONSHIPEXAMPLE OF
WORDING
A milk product, rich in fibre and protein, and reduction of the sense of hunger
• The main substantiation of the claim relates to a single, randomised, double-blind and placebo controlled study with 18 normal weight/slightly overweight female compared with a parallel group of 20 volunteers
• The sense of hunger after a breakfast including the product, (visual analogue scales) was significantly less at the beginning of the experiment but not after six weeks
• The Panel concludes that a cause and effect relationship has not been established
Lactobacillus plantarum 299v (DSM 9843) improve iron absorption.
• Five publications identified Four human studies. Two correspond to published data and two are unpublished. The fifth is an in vitro unpublished study.
• Weaknesses of the studies, short intervention periods, differences in the doses of limited number of subjects, and conflicting findings
• On the basis of the data presented, the Panel concludes that a cause and effect relationship has not been established
Studi di sicurezza
TEST SUGLI ANIMALI
pubblicazioni scientifiche nazionali o internazionali peer-reviewed.
• Strutture sanitarie pubbliche o equiparate
• Enti di Ricerca pubbici o privati• Centri di riferimento riconosciuti
dall‘EFSA• Strutture sanitarie private, • Medici di Medicina Generale • Pediatri di Libera Scelta• Medici libero-professionisti
Studi sull’uomo
Studi sull’uomo
ALLEGATO 1SCHEDA TRASMISSIONE DATI SU STUDI
CONDOTTI SULL’UOMO
• Codice del trial autorizzato
• Data di approvazione del comitato etico:
• Titolo dello studio e costituente alimentare coinvolto:
• Promotore • Sperimentatore responsabile • Comitato Etico
ALLEGATO 2SCHEDA PER LA TRASMISSIONE DEI RISULTATI
DELLO STUDIO
STUDI SUGLI ALIMENTI ANTIOSSIDANTI
• Malattie cardiovascolari• Cancro al seno• Malattie neurodegenerative• Cancro alla prostata• Diabete• Pancreatite cronica• Infertilità maschile• Malattie renali
Mortality in Randomized Trials of Antioxidant Supplements for Primary and Secondary
Prevention
• A total of 232 606 participants randomly assigned in 68 trials.
RESULTS
• Beta carotene, vitaminA, and vitamin E given singly or combined with other antioxidant supplements significantly increase mortality.
• Not find convincing evidence that antioxidant supplements have beneficial effects on mortality.
• Beta carotene, vitamin A, and vitamin E seem to increase the risk of death
Antioxidant Supplementation Increases theRisk of Skin Cancers in Women but Not in Men
• A total of 13,017 volunteers,7876 women and 5141 men were randomized to take the capsule containing a combination of antioxidants or a matching placebo
RESULTS
• The effect of antioxidant supplementation on the incidence of SC varies according to gender.
• Antioxidant supplementation was associated with a significant reduction in the overall incidence of all-site cancers in men with no effect in women.
• The incidence of all types of SC and melanomas was higher in the group of women receiving antioxidant supplementation compared with the placebo group. Such an effect was not observed in men.
• Dietary supplementation with vitamins and trace element antioxidants may not always provide beneficial effects.
• Better define the safety profile of such nutrients to be able to assess accurately the risk-benefit relationship associated with their use as dietary supplements.
