Obiettivi formativi: Acquisizione di una conoscenza generale della storia della letteratura e della cultura inglese nel

Long Eighteenth Century, nonché di competenze relative alla comprensione e all’analisi critica dei

fenomeni letterari di questo periodo in una dimensione storicoculturale. Acquisizione di

competenze relative alle metodologie di analisi critico-letteraria, attraverso lo studio di testi

esemplari. Specificamente per LCMC e LTI prima lingua, acquisizione di competenze relative alle

metodologie di analisi e della ricerca critico letteraria e filologica, attraverso lo studio di testi con

attenzione agli aspetti formali della lingua letteraria oltre che tematici, interculturali e intermediali.

Acquisizione di conoscenze approfondite sul dibattito teorico-metodologico e di capacità di

argomentarne criticamente i contenuti.

Propedeuticità: Letteratura inglese I

Programma del corso:

Il modulo intende offrire un panorama organico dei principali movimenti letterari del “Lungo

Settecento” (dalla Restaurazione al Romanticismo – dal 1660 al 1830), analizzando l'evoluzione dei vari

generi e, nello specifico contesto culturale, la poetica degli autori più rappresentativi. Il corso, inoltre, si

propone di fornire gli strumenti critici per consentire allo studente di orientarsi nel campo degli studi

culturali e letterari collegati al periodo. Tenendo conto degli obiettivi sopra specificati, verranno letti,

analizzati e contestualizzati testi dalla Restaurazione e dal Romanticismo.

Course Aims

To acquire a good general knowledge of the main features of the history of English literature and

culture in the Long Eighteenth Century, as well as skills related to the comprehension and critical

analysis of the literary phenomena of this period within their historical and cultural context. To

acquire a good working knowledge of methodologies of analysis and of literary-critical and

philological research through the study of texts with attention to their formal and thematic aspects

and through an intertextual and intermedial approach. Further, to acquire knowledge of the current

theoretical and methodological critical debate and the ability to discuss critically the themes and

issues addressed during the course.

Programma del corso:

Course Programme The module will offer a broad panorama of the principal literature movements of ‘the long Eighteenth

Century’ (from the Restoration to the Romantic period – from 1660 to 1830). It will study the evolution

of various literary genres within their specific cultural contexts. The course will also provide students

with a critical methodology to allow them to engage with the literature and culture of the time being

studied. In the light of the aims outlined above, the course will offer a detailed analysis of a variety

of important Restoration and Romantic texts which will be studied within the socio-cultural context

of the time.

The lessons will, for the most part, take place in English.
