Our company is licensee from the Ingenieurburo IMHOF GmbH for the design, engineering, manufacturing and selling of floating roof tank seals for all petroleum, petrochemical and chemical products. The engineering is taylor-made for each application and benefits of the most modern computer programs. The production takes place in the ISECO's factory in Treviolo and uses modern and highly automatized machinery. In the following pages are shown the most used seals and their suggested application. Together with the products, our company offers pre and after-sale services, such as: • Consulting on the best solution for any given tank, new or existing with the possibility

Seals for floating roof tanks

TECHNICAL FEATURES

All metal parts are made from 18-8 Cr-Ni Stainless Steel, and from a specially treated S.S. the springs, which form the autocentering thrust system and guarantees the contact of sealing element on the tank wall. All seals are joined to the roof terminal with an antistatic plastic curtain, generally Polyurethane, reinforced with a textile mesh, generally Polyester. These materials insure the maximum resistance to the abrasion with the best chemical resistance against the product and the atmospheric agents. The spring design insures that the material works within the elastic limits. The use of multiple single springs and a continuous curtain between the contact element and the roof terminal insures the maximum sealing efficiency and the best conditions for a valid fight against the fire. In fact, the curtain forbids the entrance of the air into the vapour space tank wall-roof and, when it is burnt out because of a fire, permits the immediate entrance of the foam down to the liquid surface. This feature makes not necessary that the foam dam be higher than the top of the seal. These considerations coincide to the German VFBD Commission 5. The installation is easy and time-saving. No welding, no drilling, only bolting. The various components are light, within the man handling capacity. All the installation operations are executed with the roof at the maximum height and this peculiarity allows to operate with the tank in service. The contact element of the secondary seal has a generous contact area (not less than 50 mm in height), feature which insures good seals also with tank wall irregularities (protruded welds). The design of the secondary seal permits an easy inspection of the primary seal set underneath, by simply pulling the secondary springs away from the tank wall.

Recommendations for the correct choice of the seals

The correct choice of the seal is made in accordance to some factors, the most important of which is the characteristics of the stored product (chemical composition, aromaticy, temperature, paraffin content, etc). Following are listed the most used seals produced by ISECO, and their common usage. ISECO recommends to install always two seals, a primary one in direct contact with the liquid and a secondary one, installed directly upon the primary seal, both fixed to the roof terminal (angle or bar) in a independent way. With this arrangement the evaporation losses from a volatile product are strongly reduced, with consequent saving of product and improvement of the environment. The most used primary seal are:

•• IM-PGT with metallic panels in contact with the shell. •• IM-PGX as above but with 4 lines of scrapers, used for paraffinic products, as crude oil and heavy burning oils.

The most used secondary seals are:

•• IM-WSU with a resilient cushion in contact with the shell and a poliurethanic curtain. •• IM-WSU-H as above but with the curtain from HYPALON, covered by a poliurethane layer in the area of contact with the shell (abrasion resistance). •• IM-WSW where the contact element with the shell is made from a multilayer felt cushion, capable of water detection in order to forbid the entrance in the tank of the rainwater, thus recommended for water-sensible products (jet fuel, unleaded gasoline, MTBE, etc). An interesting alternative to the poliurethanic curtains is HYPALON, a chlorinesulfonated rubber having an exceptionally good resistance to the sun light and related UV-rays due to its bright colour, suitable also for resistance to ozone, acid attack and electrolysis and hight temperatures. Due to its high chlorine content HYPALON is self-extinguishing (test by the UNDERWRITERS LABORATORIES and the antifire German authorities F1). Ideal for curtains not in contact with the shell due to its poor abrasion resistance (in these cases the area is protected with a poliurethanic layer) The secondary seals IM-WSU, WSUH and WSW, thanks to the U-shaped springs (patented) and to the stabilizers are suitable to overcome the shell disuniformities (out of roundness) and maintain a satisfactory operating condition. These seals can be classified in the API 2517 category <<tight>> and due to their almost perfect adherence to the shell could be upgraded to an <<extratight>> category, thus trepassing the efficiencies of 95% minimum required by the directive CE 94/63. These seals conform also to the NFPA 11-A-3-2-11.1 rule (antifire protection) and to the CE 64.2 Par 14.2.03 note regarding the earthing of the tanks.
