La dieta che J.H. Kellog propagandava era costituita da cibi insipidi: era infatti un sostenitore dell’astinenza sessuale, e seguiva i principi di S ylvester Graham che riteneva che i cibi dolci e piccanti potesseroaumentare le passioni mentre i corn flakes e gli alimenti vegetaliavrebbero avuto un effetto anti-afrodisiaco.

• Conclusioni– Si può concludere con una percezione positiva
per quanto riguarda l’effetto benefico delle fibre nella prevenzione di alcune, comuni forme di cancro, in quanto, in alcuni casi, ha mostrato proprietà chemioprotettive, sia per quanto riguarda la fibra solubile, sia per quanto riguarda la fibra insolubile senza una particolare prevalenza di una tipologia sull’altra.

– Per ogni incremento di 3 porzioni/die di cereali integrali, vi è una riduzione del 9% della mortalità per tumore (tutte le sedi) 0,91 ci 0,84-0,98

Conclusioni • Vi sono convincenti evidenze che le fibre dietetiche riducano il rischio
di tumore intestinale, e limitate, ma suggestive evidenze, che possano essere associate ad una riduzione del rischio nel tumore esofageo.
• Vi sono evidenze suggestive ma ancora insufficienti per giungere a correlazioni riguardanti altri tipi di tumore come mammella, prostata e ovaio
• Il consumo di fibre e cereali integrali è comunque associato ad un più basso rischio di malattie croniche come obesità, diabete di tipo 2 e patologie cardiovascolari. S i stanno evidenziando delle prove sull’importanza di includere regolarmente alimenti integrali in una dieta di prevenzione del cancro.
• Poiché i vantaggi della fibra possono essere dati dalla combinazione delle sostanze nutritive degli alimenti che la contengono , si raccomanda di consumare cibi integrali piuttosto che un integratore di fibra alimentare.
