FUTURE OF BIO-ENERGY ON STAGE AT EIMA INTERNATIONAL

BBio-energies will appear in theforeground at the Bolognatrade fair November 12 to

16 during the run of EIMAEnergy, anew and important event dedicat-ed to renewable energy sourcespromoted by UNACOMA in theframework of the authoritative andconsolidated EIMA International.EIMAEnergy arises out of the greatsuccess of the international exhibi-tion of agricultural machinery andits organization is backed by coop-eration with the leading agencies atwork for years in the section of bio-energy, and through close ties withthe industrial, institutional and aca-demic spheres. These are ITABIA(Italian Biomass Association), CNR-IVALSA (National Research Coun-cil - Institute for Wood Working andTree Species), Ambient Italia (Re-search Institute), CRPA (AnimalProduction Research Center) andCTI (Italian Thermal Technical Com-mittee).With its debut this year, EIMAEn-ergy will mark a new stage in agenuine strategy project withwhich UNACOMA intends to addnew drive to the development ofrenewable energy sources in agri-culture. This commitment under-taken by the union of agriculturalmachinery manufacturers has dis-tant beginnings and has alreadyled to important results. A few ex-amples to cite are the start-up in2005 of the European UnionBITES project (Biofuels Technolo-gies European Showcase), the dy-namic BiomassEIMA staged in2006, accords signed by ITABIAand Coldiretti for supporting thegrowth of bio-energies and joiningthe Italian Biofuels TechnologicalPlatform, along with the recent de-velopment of software for the pur-pose of orienting farming enter-prises towards the most suitableactivities in the bio-energy field.

The eventhas already been awarded thesponsorship of AIEL (Italian Agri-Forestry Energies Association),ANEV (Italian Wind Energy Associ-ation), ASSOCOSTIERI (BiodieselProducers’ Union), Biofuels Italia(Italian Biofuels Technological Plat-form), the Global Bioenergy Part-nership and Legambiente.Above all, EIMAEnergy is intendedas an occasion for involving theentire primary sector, strongly rep-resented at EIMA as far as mecha-nization and agricultural equip-ment are concerned, and bringingagriculture and the sphere of therenewables together. The mostup-to-date offerings for this greatmarket will be arriving in Bolognafor the creation of the first greatshowcase of products, technolo-gies and services for the genera-tion of energy from renewablesources. The numbers confirm therelevance of the appointment:1,800 exhibiting companies from42 countries and more than133,000 visitors, including some20,000 from abroad. On hand willbe companies producing solidbiofuels (woodchips and pelletsfor furnaces), liquid biofuels (veg-etable oils, biodiesel, bioethanol)and in gas form (biogas from theanaerobic breakdown of animalwastes). These companies will bejoined by producers and distribu-tors of plant for the conversion intoenergy of the more common re-newable energy sources (biomass,sun and wind power). The companies taking part inEIMAEnergy will be given five daysof front-rank exposure for makingcontact with a selected public ofbusinesspeople at work in the sec-tor, nationally and internationally,with maximum returns expected interms of visibility and image.Rounding out the exhibition will bea packed schedule of activities forthe dissemination of informationfor visitors and for drawing a sharpfocus on all areas in the galaxy ofrenewable energy sources.

Other than providing visitorswith a chance to talk to highly-qual-ified personnel, the info-point willalso operate as a point of referencefor disseminating information ma-terials and the presentation of themany activities on the program.Then too, some 10,000 copies of abooklet on the economic, socialand environmental fallout in the var-ious sectors of the renewables,plus profiles presenting the exhibit-ing companies, will be handed outat the info-point and the main en-trances to the fair grounds. To present as full a picture as pos-sible of the potential in developingthe renewable energy market, theEIMAEnergy run will include dis-plays of what would be difficult toput on show in a trade fair setting.For this reason, technical tours ofplant located around Bologna willbe arranged to enhance the valueof the various renewable energysources and converting them intoenergy. These visits will be toforestry worksites, plant for remoteheating fuelled by biomass, plantfor the production of vegetable oilsand biodiesel as well as biogasderived from the anaerobic break-down of animal wastes, plant han-dling agri-industrial wastes anddedicated crops and on to farmsand agritourism farms with inde-pendent energy supplied by solarand photovoltaic panels.

Seminars on specific issuesand conferences

Another important feature of theBologna event will be a programcovering an interesting cycle ofseminars on specific issues, brief,frequent and thorough, useful forlearning, for comparing experi-ences and gaining knowledge ofinstruments for the creation of in-novative business opportunities.Each seminar will last about onehour and there will be five eachday for a total of 25 specific is-sues connected to the major ar-eas of bio-energy, including in-vestment opportunities, financing,technologies and norms applied,all led by experts in the variousfields of renewable energy.There is also a long list of variedtechnical and scientific confer-ences planned for the exhibitionpavilion with leading players in theinternational world of bio-energiestaking part. genti),curati da esperti dei di-versi settori delle rinnovabili.Ricco e variegato anche ilpalinsesto di convegni tecni-co-scientifici tenuti, all’inter-no del padiglione espositivo,dai protagonisti internazio-nali del mondo delle bioe-nergie. La filiera bosco-le-gno-energia, impianti di bio-gas, tecnologie di conversio-ne energetica delle biomas-se, le fonti rinnovabili e leaziende agroenergetiche, ilprogetto Bites e le opportu-nità di sviluppo per il settoredei biocarburanti: queste letematiche precipue della con-vegnistica prevista nel conte-sto EIMAEnergy.

All’esposizione e all’o-peratività delle più modernetecnologie per la raccolta, ilcondizionamento e il traspor-to delle biomasse ad usoenergetico saranno dedicatioltre 2.000 metri quadri diarea all’aperto.I percorsi tecnico-didatticiguidati, illustrati da ricerca-tori del CNR-Ivalsa, avran-no una durata complessivadi circa 40 minuti (si ripete-ranno, a intervalli di un’ora,sei volte al giorno) e il pro-gramma di animazione pre-vede la messa in funzione dimacchinari relativi ai settoridella movimentazione dellegname, della lavorazionedella legna da ardere, dellacippatura forestale, tritura-zione dei residui e pellettiz-zazione, della raccolta e con-dizionamento dei residuiagricoli e dell’estrazione dioli vegetali per motori (a talfine verrà attivata, per la pri-ma volta in un contesto fie-ristico urbano, una linea dispremitura di semi di oleagi-nose). E, per assicurare ilmassimo coinvolgimento deivisitatori, la mostra dinamicapunterà anche sulla spetta-colarizzazione dell’esibizio-ne: intrattenimento ed infor-mazione, insomma, in ununico momento.

Dynamic display

Finally, special mention must also bemade of a further value added to up-raise the already top-flight role as-signed to EIMAEnergy: the dynamicdisplay initiative to be set up near thepavilion set aside for renewablesand close to a major entrance to thegrounds, the Costituzione Entrance.Here, machinery in operation will beused to illustrate all the phases intowhich the main wood, cellulose andoils biomass lines are broken down.The projection of audio-visual mate-rials will be used to cover the renew-ables which would be difficult or im-possible to show through directdemonstrations. More than 2,000 m2 of space out-doors will be turned over to the ex-hibition and operation of the mostmodern technologies for the har-vest, conditioning and transport ofbiomass for energy use. The guidedtechnical-didactic tours led byCNR-IVALSA will last about 40minutes and will be repeated everyhour for a total of six per day. Theanimation program calls for puttingmachines in operation according tothe sectors of wood transport,working firewood, forestry chip-ping, shredding residues and pelletmaking, harvesting and condition-ing of agricultural residues and theextraction of vegetable oils for en-gines, for which a line of oilseedpresses will be set up and operatedfor the first time in a trade fair set-ting. To ensure the involvement ofvisitors, the dynamic display will al-so feature a spectacular side incombining entertainment and infor-mation for a truly unique occasion.
