Ca’ Foscari da secoli incanta personaggi illustri, celebri artisti e visitatori di tutto il mondo. La sua strategica e scenografica collocazione “in volta del canal” fu uno dei motivi che spinse il doge Francesco Foscari, il governatore della Serenissima che diede il suo nome al palazzo, ad acquistare l’edificio nel 1452. Lo ricostruì secondo canoni architettonici e stilistici che fecero della sua dimora uno straordinario esempio di gotico veneziano. Dall’edificio si può godere un panorama unico che spazia dal ponte di Rialto al complesso dell’Accademia. La possibilità di dominare il Canal Grande l’ha reso un molo perfetto per posizionare l’imponente palco galleggiante, denominato machina, che ospita le autorità e segna la linea d’arrivo delle competizioni della Regata Storica. Il palazzo rivela scorci bellissimi: l’antica corte di Ca’ Giustinian con la scala esterna, l’ampio cortile interno a Ca’ Foscari, circondato dalle mura di cinta, le vere da pozzo finemente decorate, gli archi gotici che fanno da cornice agli ingressi d’acqua e di terra, insieme ai giochi di pieni e vuoti che caratterizzano la maestosa facciata sul Canal Grande.

Tra il 2004 e il 2006 il complesso di Ca’ Foscari-Ca’ Giustinan è stato sottoposto a una minuziosa opera di restauro (che nel 2007 ha ricevuto il prestigioso Premio Torta), una sfida significativa per architetti e progettisti che hanno coniugato antico e moderno rispettando il pregio storico della struttura e l’eredità lasciata dall’opera di Carlo Scarpa.

Negli anni ’30 e ’60 del ‘900 il celebre architetto e designer veneziano fu chiamato a restaurare l’attuale Aula Baratto e gli spazi attigui. L’intervento innovativo di Scarpa esalta la struttura architettonica quattrocentesca del palazzo, creando un gioco di luci, linee e volumi che fonde idealmente tradizione e modernità.

Agli anni ’30 risalgono anche i due affreschi presenti nell’Aula Baratto, “Venezia, l’Italia e gli studi” di Mario Sironi e “La scuola” di Mario De Luigi. Riecheggiano lo stile di Scarpa anche i serramenti dell’ingresso principale, le lampade applique al piano terra, la linea del corrimano della scala centrale.

Dal 1868 il palazzo è sede della prestigiosa Università Ca’ Foscari Venezia, fondata dal celebre economista Luigi Luzzatti, con il nome di Scuola Superiore di Commercio.

Oggi l’Università è articolata in quattro aree – economica, linguistica, umanistica e scientifica – con un ricco ventaglio di corsi di studio e ambiti di ricerca. Gli studenti iscritti all’Università Ca’ Foscari sono 20.000 e ogni anno l’Ateneo laurea circa 3.500 studenti.

For centuries Ca’ Foscari has delighted illustrious personages, celebrated artists and visitors from all over the world. Its strategic and scenic position “in volta del canal”, on the bend of the canal, was one of the reasons that inspired doge Francesco Foscari, the governor of the Serenissima who would give the palace its name, to purchase the building in 1452. He had it rebuilt according to architectural and aesthetic canons that would transform his residence into an outstanding example of Venetian Gothic. The building enjoys a unique view stretching from the Rialto Bridge to the Accademia galleries. Its position dominating the Canal Grande made Ca’ Foscari the perfect site for the huge floating stage known as the machina which is set up during Venice’s famous Regata Storica to host the judges and mark the starting line. The palace also offers lovely glimpses of the surroundings: the antique courtyard of the neighbouring Ca’ Giustinian with its external staircase as well as the spacious inner courtyard of Ca’ Foscari itself enclosed by an imposing perimeter wall, the well-heads with their finely carved decorations, the Gothic arches framing both the entrance and water-gate together with the rhythmic sequence of arches and windows characterising the splendid façade overlooking the Canal Grande.

Between 2004 and 2006 the Ca’ Foscari-Ca’ Giustinan complex underwent a painstaking restoration programme. The programme, which was awarded the prestigious Premio Torta in 2007, represented a major challenge for both architects and designers who were required to blend old and new while respecting the heritage left by Carlo Scarpa.

In the 1930s and 1960s the celebrated Venetian architect and designer was asked to restore the area now occupied by the Aula Baratto and neighbouring rooms. Scarpa’s innovative project underlines the 15th century structure of the palazzo, creating plays of light, lines and volumes melding tradition and modernity.

The Aula Baratto also contains two murals dating to the 1930s: “Venezia, l’Italia e gli studi” (Venice, Italy and Studies) by Mario Sironi and “La scuola” (The School) by Mario De Luigi. The main entrance doors, ground floor wall and the line of the hand rail running up the main staircase are all in Scarpa’s signature style.

In 1868 the palazzo became the seat of the prestigious Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, established by the famous economist Luigi Luzzatti with the name “Regia Scuola Superiore di Commercio”.

The University now comprises four macro-areas – economics, languages, humanities, and science – offering a wide range of courses and research fields. Every year 20,000 students study at the Ca’ Foscari University and 3,500 of them graduate.
