ZZuani Collio, Friuli

'Dynasty'The Collio zone of Italy’s extreme Northeast Friuli region is the recognised standard bearer for quality white wines from Italy. Patrizia Fellluga (from the local wine dynasty that includes her father and uncle, Marco & Livio) founded the winery to sum up the terroir of the region and to do so from a single ‘cru’ or vineyard. The vineyard is planted with Friulano, Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio & Sauvignon Blanc and produces two wines.

The Sodevo wines are a new range by Patricia & family with fruit from a plot of the same name. Fermented in stainless steel these are great examples of the pure, fruit driven style that pushed Collio to the forefront of Italian white wine.

The Zuani Collio Bianco ‘Vigne’ 2014 is a blend of the above grapes, each variety vinified separately in stainless steel. The wine beautifully exhibits the characteristics of classy Collio fruit - a rich yellow hue and broad palate with apricots, ripe peach, melon, and tomato leaf over a refreshing and crystal-clear framework. 5400 cases made.

The Zuani Riserva 2013 comes from selected late harvest fruit from the Zuani vineyard fermented in new French barrels with lees stirring throughout aging. Bold and tropical but retaining the ‘peach fuzz’ texture of the area with subtle toast and vanilla notes.

The Sodevo Pinot Grigio 2014 is aged for 5 months on its lees to create wonderfully tangy, fleshy wine. This is proper Pinot Grigio from fantastically located vineyards giving low yields. 2500 cases made.

The Sodevo Ribolla Gialla 2014 is a prime example of the history of the area – the Ribolla variety is inextricably linked to the hillside vineyards of the zone. The grapes undergo a pre-fermentation maceration and 10% of the wine is fermented and aged in 2.25 hl casks on its lees. The Ribolla is a wonderful food grape, savoury and delicately fruity with clean citrus, jasmine and apple. 1250 cases made.

Simcic goriska, Brda, Slovenia

'There is truth in wine'The Slovenian region of Brda lies immediately to the east of Italy’s Collio region. The two denominations, in reality, comprise one contiguous quality wine zone whose terroir is rudely bisected by an international border. Today many winemakers and grapes cross the border in both directions in short journeys from vineyard to cellar. The Simcic family trace their wine making story in the region back to 1860. Their aim is to respect the historic traditions of the region in both viticulture and winemaking. The vineyards are farmed organically, yields are kept low and only natural yeasts are used. The wines are divided into three distinct ranges.

The Classic range is from the youngest vines and is made to provide wines for earlier release. Fermentation and aging takes place in stainless steel with 8 months aging on the fine lees.

The Chardonnay Opoka 2012 is selected from the oldest vines (45 – 50 years). Fermentation occurs in 50% new Allier oak barrels of 225l & 500l with continued aging for 22 months in oak and a minimum of 12 months in bottle. Mineral laden with swooshes of vanilla and toast over the tropical fruits leading to a saline finish. 140 cases made.

a partial malolactic fermentation. Aging is 22 months in 500l oak followed by a further 18 months in bottle. Seriously complex and almost confusingly fresh with apple skin, bitter almond and minerals in abundance. 220 cases made.

The Merlot Opoka 2009 is the product of 45 year old vines. After fermentation in Stainless Steel the wine is aged in used 225l barrels for a full 48 months. The palate is harmonious and mature with plums, leather and dried violets. The finish is long and yields soft spices. 300 cases made

Leonardo Passito 2009 37.5cl 29.00

W www.simcic.si @simcic1860 simcic_wines

The Leonardo Passito 2009 can only be introduced by Marjan himself,”Leonardo sweet wine is produced with extraordinary Ribolla grapes that are hand picked and air dried for seven months. During natural drying, the late picked grapes, fully mature and carefully selected, lose more than 90% of their weight due to the slow drying process. The skin wrinkles and the sugar and acid levels rise giving the wine greater aroma and complexity. This special wine offers a variety of aromas and fragrances that change over time, maturating and combining in perfect

harmony. In the young wine, a sophisticated aroma of Ribolla prevails, growing into fragrances of vanilla, honey, dried fruit (apricot, fig...), lemon blossom, orange peel, tobacco... The first impression in the mouth is silky – perfect. The bouquet is repeated in the mouth. For an instant, you taste apricot, then, you are surprised by the strong, but not boastful character, with extraordinary elegance and harmony. A balance between sugar and acid lends the wine a fresh sweetness, a mild bitterness rounding off the whole in perfect harmony. The wine tells a story that lasts and lasts”. 40 cases made

Case Paolin Treviso, Veneto

'From under the eye of the lion'The Pozzobon brothers produce around 70,000 bottles from their vineyards, worked by the family from the 1700s. Since purchasing the land outright from the Venetian state - or ‘from under the watchful eye of the Lion of Saint Mark’ as they put it - they have developed a highly respected range of red, white and sparkling wines. Of these, we have currently chosen to focus on two Proseccos and one white wine.

The Prosecco Treviso Spumante is made from the vines next to the winery and has a great persistence of fruit with white flower aromas and a delicate, consistent and fine mousse from its careful, small-volume production. Only 12.5g/litre residual sugar. 2000 cases made.

The Asolo Prosecco Superiore comes from low yielding parcels of vines from the Asolo hills – one of the two top quality designated production zones for Prosecco. Asolo cover sonly one sixth 0f the area of Valdobbiadene Conegliano and, although it has a potential production of under one fifth of its larger sibling, actual production is under 2% of the volume. Farmed organically the grapes undergo a partial maceration and are then fermented incredibly slowly to protect the structure and aromatics of the grapes. This is full of aromas of white pepper, apple and white fruits. Exceptionally low residual sugar 7g/litre. 2500 cases made.

Costa degli Angeli Manzoni Bianco 2014 The Manzoni Bianco grape is a cross of Pinot Bianco and Riesling, the most successful of the Prof. Luigi Manzoni crossings of the early 20th Century. The Costa degli Angeli Manzoni Bianco comes from the hillside vineyard of the same name. The wine is fermented and aged in stainless steel. Full of aromas of tropical fruits, citrus and lemon verbena this offers a lovely supportive structure behind its bright fruit. 1250 cases made.

Ferghettina Franciacorta, Lombardia

'It’s hip to be square'The Franciacorta wine region is midway between Milan to the west and Lake Garda to the east. The area has been producing high quality, bottle-fermented sparkling wines since the 1950s with local viticulture dating back millennia. Roberto Gatti founded the estate in 1990 after a long career at one of the region’s early pioneer producers, Bellavista, and is now aided by Laura and Matteo, his children. The wines of Franciacorta are produced using the same techniques as Champagne. However, given the region's more Southerly location the wines produced come from riper grapes leading to lower additions of sugars and a fresher, cleaner style.

Casale chianti, toscana

'Style not fashion'An exceptional and uncompromising organic and biodynamic winery, the Gigloli–Rinaldi family can trace their Vinous presence in the zone back to 1770. This is quintessential Tuscany halfway between Firenze & San Gimignano and next to Bocaccio’s birthplace. This is traditional in all the best senses with no whiff of modernity and its natural practices rooted in time rather than fashion. The Chiantis are almost 100% Sangiovese with the addition of a dash each of Canaiolo & Colorino and sit amongst the purest expressions of the grape. The estate champions low intervention methods and patient, long aging times to focus the wines’ textural tannins and fruit, yet always remaining exquisitely fresh. The estate creates one of the few natural wines from the region (and one of the most successful). All these wines are extremely limited.

The Chianti 2010 is the most current release and the wine has been aged for 3½ years in large concrete tanks. This is the fruit of a tiny vineyard of under 1ha.

The Chianti Riserva 2005 has spent 10 years in large concrete tanks and is developed, super elegant and multi-layered with smoky cherry and mulberry fruits and classic wet stone tannins. This wine has only just been deemed ready for the market.

The Chianti Riserva 2004 has spent 8 years in large chestnut barrels -37hl- and was bottled in 2012. The vintage yielded dense, powerful wines and the resulting fruit is at the core of this.

Le Miccine Chianti Classico, Toscana

'Cru della Cru'The Le Miccine estate is located in the heart of the Chianti Classico region between the towns of Radda and Gaiole. The 7 hectares of vineyards are farmed organically and owner/winemaker Paula is equally exacting in her management of all facets of the winery and business. These are real, hand-crafted, artisanal wines from hillside vineyards in one of the most sought after Classico sub zones. Terroir here is light and the altitude contributes to the cool microclimate that is essential in producing mature, ripe Sangiovese. Her aim is to produce wines representing the traditional Tuscan varieties in isolation.

The Chianti Classico 2013 is 100% Sangiovese. Aging takes place in traditional Botti - large 40 hl oak casks for 16 months. This is quintessential new wave Chianti – modern techniques in the vineyard producing wonderful healthy grapes aged without small French oak. Fresh violets and blueberries with sweet cherry fruit and smooth grained tannins. 1,250 cases made.

The Chianti Classico Riserva 2012 is 95% Sangiovese with 5% Malvasia Nera selected bunch by bunch for concentration and depth. The superb concentration sees Paula use French oak 350l & 225l barrels of 2nd to 4th passage for 24 months. The vintage started incredibly warm, delaying ripening as the vines closed down. Autumn came to the rescue however, and the region saw great ripeness balanced by mellow alcohol and round fruit. The Riserva from Miccine is, as one would expect from Paula’s exacting standards, an uncompromising selection of exceptional, dark fruit vinified to express of the quality of the vine and the land. 580 cases made.

The Chianti Classico Riserva 2010 won a coveted Tre Bicchieri award in 2014 (one of only 415 from the 25,000 wines tasted). This was Paula’s first vintage and resulted in this top award – impressive . We have limited availability direct from the reserves at the winery. This is serious, bold and spicy with dark cherry and mulberry fruits. 660 cases made.

The Carduus 2011 is 100% Merlot (prior to Paula owning the estate this fruit made its way into the Chianti). Only three barrels are made using French oak (225l & 350l, 1st-3rd passage) for the aging. It is big and bold and has subsumed all the oak over its 24 months affinamento into its spicy, plummy & dense bouquet. Named after the Latin word for thistle to reflect Paula’s part-Scottish heritage this is a SuperTuscan without the super price tag. Frost early in the 2012 & 2013 vintages has meant that this will be the last Carduus until the 2014 is released. 83 cases made.

The Vino Nobile di Montepulciano 2012 is selected from the superior vineyards within the DOCG zone. It is aged for 24 months in French barrique – one third new with the remainder 2nd passage. The wine is concentrated and intense with a deep purple hue and full, toasty aromas. Vin Santo 2000. Vin Santo has a long heralded tradition in Tuscany and the Avignonesi Vin Santo 2000 is placed amongst the very upper tier of quality modern examples. Trebbiano and Malvasia grapes undergo a rigorous selection process – first in the vineyard, then in the winery – before being air-dried on reed mats for several months. The raisined grapes are pressed and the juice goes into 50l casks called ‘caratelli’ with a madre (mother) yeast (think of an aged sourdough starter), that

has been used at Avignonesi for decades. The barrels are sealed with wax and left for ten years in a well ventilated area to undergo the gentle effects of the season with summer seeing some re-fermentation. An icon of Tuscan wines, the complex flavours include orange peel, roast ed almonds, medicinal herbs, coffee – the list goes on and on - the colour a vibrant rich caramel with a deep mahoghany core. The Fiano Kratos 2014 is from grapes from both his vineyard parcels. One is overlooking the Gulf of Salerno (with some older vines 40+ years) and the other a higher site next to the Greek ruins at Paestum. The fruit is always of exceptional quality and fermented and aged in stainless steel. Full of exotic fruits, kiwis and apricots with an exceptional purity and tantalising aromas of raspberry flower. We have tasted back to 2002 and it is amazing how long these wines improve for, almost like a Campanian Riesling in structure, a real testament to how very good it is. Yet it is almost impossible not to drink it right now. 4,000 cases made.

The Fiano Pietraincatenata 2013 comes from a 2ha parcel from the higher vineyard and the grapes are picked slightly later. The wine is fermented in new oak and then aged in new and 2nd passage barrique for 8 months. A luminous yellow in the glass like concentrated sunshine, this is complex and full of ripe pear, candied lemon and prickling grapefruit acidity. 875 cases made.

The Aglianico Kleos 2012 is made from grapes originating from both Luigi’s vineyards. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel with aging in 2nd and 3rd passage barriques. Ruby red with violet reflections, this has whiffs of cherry, currants, spices and a lightly dried grape character, still remaining spectacularly fresh. 3,100 cases made.

The Aglianico Cenito 2010 comes from vines overlooking the Tyrrhennian Sea and after fermentation in stainless steel is then aged for 18 months in new and 2nd passage barrique. Vino Lauria Alcamo, Sicila

'Phoenix from the vines'Vito Lauria is a Sicilian local. After studying winemaking in Udine, Friuli he remained in the area expanding his experience working with some of the regions outstanding wineries. Upon returning to Sicily in 2005, and whilst working as the oenologist for a local organic winery, Vito spent his spare time renovating the family winery located at Alcamo in the island’s northwest. All wines are the product of organic vineyards carefully and expertly overseen by Vito. The focus is on Sicily’s noble local varieties, picked and vinified to retain balanced fruit, varietal character and sense of place without the over ripe, baked concentration that sometimes represents the island. By calling on a friend who is a talented artist Vito has also ensured that his packaging is some of the most tastefully stylish that we have come across.

The white wines are all from vineyards planted on calcerous soils, fermentation and aging taking place in stainless steel.

Vino Perpetuo is a Sicilian tradition dating back centuries and its discovery by the Englishman John Woodhouse in 1770 led to the development of Marsala for exportation. Late harvested Grillo grapes are fermented and added to a large barrel of existing vintages. Thus, as the wine is used and topped up, the wine is perpetual

– “perpetuo”. In Sicily’s dry climate water evaporates faster than alcohol raising the alcohol level to around 16%. Oxidation over the life of the wine – Vito’s example was started by his grandfather in 1975 – offers roasted hazelnuts and burnt caramel flavours with a salty, citrussy tang. 330 cases made.
