Pomari, profeta della cucinaayurvedica, ma intelligente media!tore tra la cultura indiana e quellaitaliana, tra l’Oriente e l’Occidente,tra i peccati di gola e la dieta salu!

S tistica, ha inserito nel menu del ri!storante «Benacus» il territorio, lastagionalità e i sapori gardesani an!che per smentire il pregiudizio chela cucina di un resort termale è ba!nale, spesso insipida e poco stuzzi!cante. La conferma l’abbiamo avutadurante la cena di gala «light» idea!ta con la consueta professionalitàdal direttore del «Caesius» GiacomoSarnataro. Lo chef del ristorantegardesano, Alessandro Salandini,ha proposto agli ospiti un menu fan!tasmagorico a cominciare dagli an!tipasti, uno più sfizioso dell’altro:involtini di mozzarella con pinoli ebasilico, pane chapaty con speckd’anatra, polpettine di patate con

foglie di curry e mango chutney, ric!cioli di pasta sfoglia con indivia bel!ga, noodles con verdure croccanti ecardamomo, pinzimonio con salsaallo zenzero, crostini di pane conpesce affumicato. Da applausi an!che i piatti proposti al tavolo: insa!latina di taccole, fiori di zucchina esalsa raita; ravioli fatti in casa confarina di mais, formaggio Monte Ve!ronese ed asparagi verdi novelli;rombo su crema di sedano rapa,broccoli verdi e chips di patate vio!la. A survey of top travel industry experts reveals 60% believe robots will take over from human reps within the next 35 years.

Applications such as Apple’s Siri show the way ahead for computer-assisted help, which will develop into holograms that replace human reps at resorts.

The idea of visiting an exotic vacation without leaving home, as seen on TV for decades on board the Starship Enterprise, is also not far off.

WTM’s Simon Press said: “Androids and holograms being part of everyday life is still science fiction – yet much of the technology is already available so I am sure they will become science fact.”

LIKE GARDABreakfast seems like a good

place to start, and if you’re lucky enough to be on the shores of Lake Garda in summer then that means a

chilled sparkling pink Bardolino.It’s not obligatory to kick off

the day with fizzy rosé, but there was something delightfully liberating about seeing it on the hotel buffet bar among the coffee, cheeses, hams, fruit, yoghurt and freshly baked bread. And if this is already starting to read like a menu, that’s almost unavoid-able in this region that cares so passionately about food and drink.

Lunch tends to revolve around fish from the lake including trout, perch, and pike, which was a new one on me. I was staying in the four star Hotel Caesius in Bardolino on the east of the lake and the kitchen had filleted it to perfection, adding rocket, garlic and olive oil to gorgeous effect.

Bardolino is a tranquil retreat which

can be explored in 10 minutes on foot, with restaurants lining the small harbour front and sneaking inland up narrow streets, the focal point being a single leaning turret that is the only remnant of the old town walls.

If it’s historic architecture you want, then that’s just an

appetizer compared to the main course less than an hour away that is Verona - five miles or so of city walls and 30 plus fortresses.

Verona would be a top Italian tourist desti-

nation even if it were not for Shakespeare picking it as

the setting for Romeo and Juliet.Yet the irony is that the city is worth

a visit for the buildings, the atmos-phere, the food, almost any reason apart from the link to the doomed fictional couple.

“Juliet’s balcony” is down a dead-end alley covered with graffiti and packed with tourists. “Watch out for pick-pockets,” cried a guide as I ventured in. A gate is covered in love padlocks,

the keys thrown away by loving couples, and a chunk of the walls is pock-marked with chewing gum, stuck there by romantics with no sense of romance or hygiene.

In contrast, the much more inter-esting Piazza Dante was peaceful enough to reflect on the stunning contrasting architecture of the surrounding civic buildings and palaces as well as the statue of the father of the Italian language.

Aside from Verona, the other obvious ports of call if you’re based in Bardolino are exactly that - the ports that the ferry visits around the lake.

These include the Gardone Riviera on the west, where it’s worth the climb away from the lake to visit the sprawling folly of the swaggering author, lover, and hero of the First World War, Gabriele d’Annunzio.

Not one of those people who suffered from self-doubt, he declared that he was a relative “ by genius” of Michelangelo and happily accepted the gift from the Italian state of the prow of a warship, which he stuck in his garden with the guns pointing over the lake. He sounds like one of those people who are amusing at a distance but insufferable up close, though it is impossible to think entirely badly of someone who made unwelcome visi-tors turn to a room on the right, welcome visitors to a room on the left.

When Mussolini visited, he was made to turn right.

Having walked back down to the shore, if you’re peckish then there’s a promenade of sunny restaurants or, if you fancy spoiling yourself, the cool elegance of the Grand Hotel. Its famous visitors include Churchill.

Garda is the biggest lake in Italy but the energetic can still cycle around it in a day and if you do, you’ll notice that different parts have different charac-ters. There’s more nightlife down south, more water sports up north, more peaceful space in the centre.

Everywhere, though, will appeal to a gourmet and wine buff. When choosing a bottle remember that cheap does not mean inferior, it means local,

and there a plenty of local gems to pick. For an easy drinking white, you can’t go wrong with Lugana, and for red there’s Bardolino Classico. “For me it’s fantastic, it’s not a wine for keeping in your cellar, it’s a young wine, for drinking immediately, for drinking for pleasure,” gushed Giuseppe Roncoletta, manager of the Lamberti winery.

A short hop from Lamberti there’s production of another sort of liquid that provokes just as much passion - olive oil. Valentina Turri’s family has been in the business for generations and swears by the local produce: “Olive oil from the north of Italy is more sweet and delicate than oil from the south.”

After a day’s touring you can’t do better than find yourself poolside back at the Caesius or in the centre of Bardolino where you can sit outside a cafe that serves 22 types of ice cream or at a bar offering 100 types of spritzer. Star of the latter has to be a Hugo, a mixture of Prosecco, a liqueur called St Germain made from elderflower, and heaps of mint and ice.

And to finish? There’s obviously grappa in its many varieties but for something more adventurous you could try Laurus 48, a monastic herbal digestive. The 48, by the way, is its alcoholic percentage strength.

You won’t need many to guarantee a good night’s sleep in a part of Italy that’s got a rosé outlook on life.

Flag carrier Icelandair is starting services to Orlando’s international airport from September with four flights a week offering connections in Reykjavik from Birmingham, Glasgow, Manchester, Heathrow, Gatwick. Passengers can arrange stopovers in Iceland on their way to Orlando for up to seven nights for no extra fare.

They will look after guests in Etihad’s Airbus A380 Residence, a luxury three room apartment on the double decker superjumbo flying from Abu Dhabi to Heathrow, starting on December 27.

Holidaymakers expect to have fingerprint identification on their passports in the near future.

Two studies by World Travel Market organisers found around two-thirds of holidaymakers surveyed for the poll said they thought fingerprint passports were the way ahead, with almost half (49%) of the travel industry saying that they would definitely be introduced.

The UK has been issuing ‘biometric’ passports – also known as ‘ePassports’ – since 2006.

The passports include a microchip which stores a digitised image of the

holder’s passport photograph as well as the biographical details printed on the passport.

The EU has set minimum standards for passports which include the use of facial and fingerprint biometrics but the UK is not covered by the regulations.

Fingerprint identification on passports had been planned by the previous government, in order to keep pace with the EU regulations.

However, the current coalition government halted these plans and does not intend to extend the use of biometrics in passports beyond facial

biometrics. Visitors to the US will be familiar with fingerprinting, as the identification technology is used at border control points and also by many theme parks such as Universal in Orlando.

Futurologist Ian Yeomans said: “Biometrics have been around since the 19th century – when Alphonse Bertillon developed the concept for French police – and today it is the central concept for securing personal identity.

Biometrics is at the heart of the new Google Glass wearable hands-free technology.

predicted after next April’s fall in airline ticket taxes.

The drop in Air Passenger Duty will save British passengers more than £200million a year and spark a rise in long-haul flights.

The prediction comes from travel industry experts ahead of the World Travel Market.

Canada, Japan, Vietnam, China, India and New Zealand are also expected to see an increase in UK tourists.

Current fares could drop by up to £23 a head on an economy class ticket to Asia. WTM’s Simon Press said: “The current system has priced many families out of taking flights.”

Brits hoping to escape for some autumn or winter sun, be warned... the price of a trip to paradise just went up.

The Maldives is implementing a nationwide 50% tourist tax hike for all of its islands in the Indian Ocean.

The cost of their Tourism Goods & Service Tax – their equivalent of Britain’s VAT – rises from 8% to 12% with immediate effect today.

What that means for sun-lovers is the cost of their accommodation, food, drink, excursions and other purchases are all going to rise as the tax goes into double digits.

So a bar or restaurant bill for $50 (the standard currency quoted on most of the islands) will now see an additional $6 added.

And when each island’s variable standard charge is added, the tax change could see costs rise by at least 20% on each transaction.

It could also have strong repercussions generally on the Maldives archipelago, which consists of 1,192 islands, as tourism is the lifeblood to the nation’s economy.
