GIOVANNI ANTONIO DE’ SACCHIS:
IL PORDENONE
(PORDENONE 1483/84 - FERRARA 1539)
Born in Pordenone between 1483 and 1484.
His father was Angelo, a magister murarius
originally from Brescia. His mother was called
Maddalena, and nothing is known about her
family. He had three wives. In 1534 one of
his daughters, Graziosa, married Pomponio
Amalteo, his best pupil. Aware of the work of
Gianfrancesco da Tolmezzo and Pellegrino da
San Daniele, whose infl uence can be seen in
his early frescoes in Valeriano and Vacile, he
began to move closer to the artistic culture of
Veneto during the years that Giorgione and
the young Tiziano were working in Venice.
This greater expressive freedom can be seen
in his altarpiece in Vallenoncello (1513-1514),
his frescoes in Villanova (1514), his
masterpieces on the altarpiece in Susegana
(pre-1516) and Misericordia (1515) in the
Cathedral of Pordenone. His mature style can
be seen in the exact setting of his scenes,
his perfectly calibrated perspective and his
correct use of light, which brings out the
depth of spaces and the volume of fi gures.
His subsequent contact with modern methods
and the infl uence of works by Raffaello and
Michelangelo led him to refi ne his style even
further. His artistic innovation, with powerful
and dramatic compositions, can be seen in his
Storie della Passione (Stories of the Passion)
cycle of paintings in Cremona’s cathedral,
realised between 1520 and 1522. Many of his
fresco cycles and works on wood and canvas
can still be found in and around Pordenone,
including in Travesio (1517-1526), Spilimbergo
(1524), Valeriano (1524-1527) and Pinzano
(1525-1527). He died in Ferrara in 1539.
GIOVANNI ANTONIO DE’ SACCHIS,
GENANNT „IL PORDENONE“
(PORDENONE 1483/84 - FERRARA 1539)
Der Maler wurde zwischen 1483 und 1484
in Pordenone als Sohn des Angelo geboren,
eines Magister murarius aus Brescia. Der
Vorname der Mutter war Maddalena, ihr
Nachname ist unbekannt. Er war dreimal
verheiratet.
Jahren 1520-1522. Auch im Gebiet von
Pordenone schuf der Künstler zahlreiche
Freskenzyklen sowie Altarbilder und Gemälde,
u.a. in Travesio (1517-1526), Spilimbergo
(1524), Valeriano (1524-1527) und Pinzano
(1525-1527). Er starb 1539 in Ferrara.

GIOVANNI ANTONIO DE’ SACCHIS, DETTO IL PORDENONE
(PORDENONE 1483/84 - FERRARA 1539)
numerosi cicli d’affreschi e opere su tavola e su tela, come a Travesio (1517-1526),
Spilimbergo (1524), Valeriano (1524-1527), Pinzano (1525-1527).

SAN MARCO’S CATHEDRAL,
PALA DELLA MADONNA
DELLA MISERICORDIA (1515-1516)
Built in the early 13th century, it has an
incomplete external façade, with four
large stone semi-columns, the outcome of
construction work in the 19th century. Three
works by Pordenone can be seen in the Duomo:
the Pala della Misericordia, the triptych of
frescoes - on an octagonal pillar and and the
Pala di San Marco on the high altar. In the Pala
della Misericordia the composition has a perfect
balance of fi gures and setting, with bright
colours. Against a backdrop of a beautiful shady
landscape featuring the presence of a majestic
castle and a fortifi ed city gate, the Madonna
emerges in the foreground, in the middle of the
scene. Francesco da Tiezzo, who commissioned
the painting, is portrayed, with his family,
kneeling under the Madonna’s cloak. To the right
of the composition, we can see the tender gaze
of the very human and gentle fi gure of Saint
Joseph holding the Child, who, contrary to the
dictates of classicism, does not want to keep
still. To the left we can observe the monumental
robust fi gure of Saint Christopher, who is also
moving and carrying the Child on his shoulders.
SAN MARKUS DOM,
PALA DELLA MADONNA

DUOMO DI SAN MARCO,
PILASTRO OTTAGONALE
SAN MARCO’S CATHEDRAL,
OCTAGONAL PILASTER
Here, the development of Pordenone’s art
can be appreciated. The oldest fresco is
the Madonna con il Bambino, portrayed
in a fake alcove. Despite the realistic sense
conveyed in the way Mary is holding her
son in her arms, with her draping clothes
that suggest a real body beneath and a
sweet expression on her face, this fi gure is
far from St. Erasmus, whose arm interrupts
the pattern of the architectural frame, and
from St. Roch, who completely fi lls the
space and captures our attention with his
intense gaze and modern garments.
SAN MARKUS DOM,
ACHTECKZIGER PFEILER:

Medieval Palazzo Ricchieri has housed the
Museo Civico d’Arte (Civic Art Museum) since
1970. The ancient patriarchal residence was
donated to the city for cultural purposes by
Lucio Ernesto Ricchieri, Count of Sedrano.
Its artistic heritage comprises an important
collection of wood sculptures and artefacts
mainly produced in Veneto and Friuli, whereas
the work by Pordenone is situated in the place
of honour. His works include four segments
(1534ca) that come from the baptismal font
of the Duomo (cathedral) and depict salient
episodes of the life of the Baptist.
These small compositions reveal how shapes
were increasingly structured through colour.
Their distinctive features are the backdrops
where the scenes take place and the views
of the landscape glimpsed through windows.

Kennzeichnend
sind die eindrucksvollen Hintergründe,
in denen die Szenen abgebildet sind,
und die Landschaftsabschnitte, die sich
über die Fenster erahnen lassen.

PALAZZO MANTICA, CORSO V. EMANUELE, 52

On the facade, in a wide space enclosed
by two second fl oor windows, is an historic
Roman scene, a battle between two knights,
attributed to Pordenone. Under a string
course is a frieze of plant motifs that includes
cornucopias, shoots, scrolls and, in the centre,
the Mantica family coat of arms.
PORDENONE’S HOUSE
Giovanni Antonio de’ Sacchis lived near
Pordenone’s cathedral, on contrada San
Marco, in the building that now houses
the so-called Studiolo del Pordenone,
where some of his frescoes are located.

Die Fassade zeigt auf einer breiten Fläche
zwischen zwei Fenstern im zweiten Stock
eine Szene aus der römischen Geschichte,
die einen Kampf zwischen zwei berittenen

stammen vermutlich vom Pordenone.
Unter einem Band, das als Gurtgesims
dient, verläuft ein Fries mit pfl anzlichen
Motiven sowie Füllhörnern, Zweigen und
Schriftrollen, in deren Mitte das Wappen
der Familie Mantica thront.
WOHNHAUS DES PORDENONE
Giovanni Antonio de’ Sacchis wohnte

The initial church was built in the 7th century,
whereas the present church was built
between 1880-1885, in neoclassical style,

followed. Inside the church, one of the most
vigorous works by Pordenone can be found:
the Pala dell’Altar Maggiore, featuring the
Madonna tra i Santi Ilario e Taziano, Antonio
Abate e Giovanni Battista (1519 (?) - 1521).
The Madonna col Bambino in Grembo is
situated in an unadorned alcove, comprising
a few lines. At her feet, on the left, the saints
Illarius and Tazianus of Acquileia are depicted
(in the foreground facing the observer),
both with a serious and dignifi ed appearance.
On the right of the composition, in the
foreground, we can fi nd John the Baptist with
a strong body, and next to him the fi gure of
Antony the Abbot, with a white beard.
The two musician angels also attract our
attention. The seated cherub playing a string
instrument reveals all his musical fl air, and
his energy is expressed in the soft toes of
his left foot.

1880-1885 im klassischen Stil fertig gebaut.
Innen ist eines der kraftvollsten Werke
des Pordenone erhalten: die Altartafel des
Hochaltars, die die Madonna zwischen den
Heiligen Hilarius und Tatianus, Antonius dem
Großen und Johannes dem Täufer darstellt
(1519 (?) - 1521).
Linien bestehenden schmucklosen Nische
untergebracht. Zu ihren Füßen befi nden sich links
die Heiligen Hilarius (im Vordergrund und zum
Betrachter gewandt) und Tatianus aus Aquileia,
beide mit strengem und würdigem Ausdruck.
Rechts, im Vordergrund, Johannes den Täufer
mit kraftvollem Körper und daneben die Figur
des Heiligen Antonius des Großen mit seinem
schneeweißen Bart. Was die Aufmerksamkeit

verso l’osservatore) e Taziano, entrambi dall’aspetto severo e dignitoso.

Here we can fi nd the Padri della Chiesa in

a traditional manner but with the innovative
element in the use of light and bright colours,
with total freedom in its pictorial realization.
A particularly interesting feature is the fi gure
of the Prophet Jeremiah, shown with a
vigorous and realistic movement, painted by
Pordenone without using a clear brushstroke
but shaping and blending three colours:
red ochre, white and terra di Siena.

Gruppen musizierender Engel in den
unbedeutenderen Winkeln. Der Aufbau der
Ausschmückung ist traditionell gehalten,
was hingegen innovativ ist, ist die
Verwendung heller und strahlender Töne
und eine extreme Freiheit in der malerischen
Umsetzung.

chiesetta rurale (XII-XIII sec.).

CHURCH OF SAN LORENZO
The church was built in the fi rst half of the
20th century, incorporating part of the building,
which between the early 15th c. and early
16th c. replaced the original small rural church
(12th-13th c.). The ancient presbytery area is
now the fi rst chapel on the right side, frescoed
by Pordenone, who was commissioned
to undertake the work in 1516. Of the
commissioned work, the artist fi nished the
vault of the choir but not the side walls, which
were later completed by Marcello Fogolino.
The four webs/cells in the centre of the ribs,
depict episodes from the life of the Madonna.
Descending along the eight squinches of the
ribs, we can fi nd the impressive fi gures of the
Fathers of the Church and the Evangelists,
in three-quarter depictions. What is striking
about these frescoes, especially when
compared to more or less contemporary ones
of the church in Villanova, is the realistic
aspect of the fi gures that create a uniform
“pictorial structure”, and the use of colours,
which are generally darker and colder than
the light, luminous colours of the frescoes
in the church of Sant’Ulderico.

KIRCHE SAN LORENZO
Jungfrau dargestellt. In den acht Panaschen
der Leinwände fi nden wir die mächtigen
Figuren der Kirchenväter und der Evangelisten.
Was an diesen Fresken beeindruckt, ist das
realistische Aussehen der Figuren, die eine
gleichmäßige “Malstruktur” ergeben, und
außerdem die Verwendung von dunklen und
insgesamt kälteren Farben im Vergleich zu
den hellen und strahlenden Farbtönen der
Kirche von Sant’Ulderico.
