Up to relatively recent times, thecommonly accepted number of airvictories gained by the ANR fighterpilots was between 239 and 240planes shot down as well as ano-ther 115 unconfirmed between Ja-nuary 1944 and April 1945.However, a re-examination of bothBritish and American operationalreports led to reconsider thosenumbers, showing how the air vic-tories actually gained by the Repu-blican fighter pilots probablytotalled in truth one quarter of thefigures accepted for decades.With this fact we don’t want to ac-cuse the Republican fighter pilotsin any way of having deliberatelyexaggerated their scores.Moreo-ver, we don’t mean with this eitherto belittle or put into perspectivethe contribution of the ANR to thewar effort of the Axis, or to mini-mize their moral motivations andtheir great personal courage. Onthe contrary the latter two aspectshad been shown to be fundamen-tal in continuing with the fight in asituation of complete material andnumerical inferiority, but not in mo-

rale. This has been fully provednot only by the hard air battles andby the grave losses sustained by“Mussolini’s Hawks” in a year anda half of war, but also by the insi-gnificant number of desertions intheir ranks. There were only twoRSI fighter pilots who voluntarilyhanded themselves over to theenemy, while a third had himselfinterned in Switzerland. In fact it isas well to remember that therewere many more crews of otherbelligerent nations that sought sa-fety in flight to Swiss territory. Atthe end of the war numerousAmerican aircraft were parked atSwiss airports that could be com-pared to just one Macchi 205 ofthe ANR, this fact in itself was in-dicative of the devotion to duty ofthe pilots of the Aeronautica Na-zionale Repubblicana.

The Air battles of the last twomonths of 1941 are esaminein this study. Operation Cru-sader was at the time in pro-gress. After making twounsuccessfully attempts topush back the Italo-Germanarmy in the spring-summer,the Commonwealth under-took its greatest offensivesince the start of the war.The basic philosophy was tohave such a superiorita` offorce in the field s to be sureof the success of the opera-tion. This book reconstructs the birth of theIsraeli Air Force and offers a detailedaccount of the air battles of the 1948Independence War, the first of theArab/Israeli wars. It also traces theroots of military aviation in Israel andin the Middle East back to the earlydays of the Second World War andcollects the point of view of most of themen involved in the war, including thatof the dozens of American, Cana-dians, South African and British volun-teers who flocked in Israel’s aid in1948: the author produced an accountwhich, by combining their various re-ports and memories, is as accurateand unbiased possible, also underli-ning the role of Italy in the events.In 1947-48, getting round the militaryembargo declared by the United Na-tions and enforced by Britain authori-ties in Palestine, Israel built up a largeforce of pre-war civil aircraft, trainersand surplus military observation pla-nes to form an 'underground' air force.Hand grenades and then, slightlymore effectively, light bombs thrown

out of the door were the main wea-pon.Training courses for future IAF pilots(many were volunteers looking for ex-citement after having flown in WorldWar Two) were organized in Rome,and even most of the “smuggled” pla-nes arrived in Israel from Italy. A lot ofamazing stories and anecdotes pun-ctuates the efforts to secretly find,buy, restore, collect and send the pla-nes in Israel from all over the world.On May 15th 1948 the state of Israelwas declared and the Arab statessurrounding Israel (Egypt, Syria, Jor-dan, Lebanon and Iraq) attacked.Israel quickly cast around for moremodern aircraft and their main sup-plier was Czechoslovakia. TheCzechs sold Israel twenty-five Avia S-199 (Bf 109Gs assembled from partsleft over after the war) and also recei-ved an order for fifty ex-Czech AirForce Spitfires. In addition they con-verted back to bombers three civilia-nised B-17s that the Israelis hadbought in America. In all more than

thirty different types of aircraft wereadded to the Israeli inventory, thoughnot all arrived in time to see action.Opposing them were the RoyalEgyptian Air Force and the muchsmaller Syrian and Iraqi air arms.The latter two consisted mainly of afew T-6 Texan trainer/light bombersand Avro Ansonreconnaissance/bombers, but theEgyptians were equipped with Spitfi-res and C-47 Dakota transportsadapted as bombers.In addition to attacks on Israel theEgyptians also launched severalraids on British forces garrisoned inIsrael. The first raid surprised theRAF and two Spitfires were destro-yed on the ground. However, subse-quent attacks were intercepted bythe RAF and two Egyptian Spitfiresfell to RAF Spitfires. The RAF cla-shed with Israeli planes too. An RAFSpitfire, part of a reconnaissanceflight, was brought down by IsraeliAA fire and the rest of the unit wasthen bounced by a pair of Israeli Spit-

fires. All three RAF planes were shotdown. Nineteen Spitfires and Tempestswere sent to look for their downed com-rades, these were attacked in turn byfour Israeli Spitfires who managed toknock down a Tempest with no loss tothemselves. Egypt sustained the armsrace by purchasing fighter reinforce-ments in the shape of Italian Fiat G.55Centauro and Macchi MC.205V Veltro.They were the last fighter types produ-ced by Italy at the end of the SecondWorld War and were considered asgood as any of their contemporaries.The Egyptians also got their hands ona few four-engine Stirling transportswhich they quickly converted back tobombers.Most of the fighting revolved around at-tacking enemy ground troops but longerranged bombing raids on cities andother strategic targets were also carriedout. Israeli successes both in the air andon the ground forced the Syrian andIraqi governments to halt their offensi-ves. The Israelis concentrated their ef-forts on Egypt and they soon began todecimate the Egyptian Air Force andmake huge inroads into Arab controlledterritory. In January 1949 a ceasefirewas agreed and the Israeli Indepen-dence War was over, though its strugglefor independence was not.The author has been able to produce awell-balanced account of that war, arare achievement in the touchy topic ofArab/Israeli conflicts. Generously illu-strated with a plethora of photographsand with an appendix of colour profilesand technical sheets of the planes, andwritten in a clear and readable stylebacked up with extensive and accurateresearch, this book is an informativeand thorough account of the air opera-tions of the first years of the history ofIsraeli Air Force.
