ESOF – EuroScience Open Forum
The largest interdisciplinary science meeting in Europe focused on scientific research and innovation.
It offers a unique biennial platform for interaction and debate for scientists, young researchers, business people, policy makers, science communicators and general public.
Created in 2004, it brings together over 4000 participants from all over the World; more than 40 % are students and
young researchers.
The 9th edition will be in Trieste in 2020!

Trieste has seen the development of important International and National research institutes for
research, technology transfer and the dissemination of science
bringing to the city a concentration of research workers among the highest in the world
As a Central European city, Trieste will work to make ESOF2020 an example of strengthening links with Central and Eastern
European scientists, businesses, politicians and citizens

About 15 members, 1/3 from local organizers and 2/3 from Europe (including East-Central countries)
Science in the city: organized by host city
200-250 events to be selected for the ESOF week
SCIENCE PROGRAMME: a mix of bottom-up proposals and top-down keynotespeeches, with plenary sessions, workshops, roundtables and debates
SCIENCE TO BUSINESS PROGRAMME: which will be mainly based on innovationissues and public private partnerships
CAREER PROGRAMME: which will consider young scientists future careers,women careers and future “new jobs” opportunities
SCIENCE POLICY PROGRAMME: We will call upon all stakeholders,governments, scientists, industry and the public at large, to cooperate in ajoint effort to ensure reliable, evidence based policy-making for the benefit ofwhole society

ESOF 2020 Trieste Outreach activities will have a broader scope than standardESOF Programmes, being planned in 2018, 2019 and 2020 (PRO-ESOF events) inTriveneto + Central and Eastern Europe
All PROESOF and ESOF 2020 activities will be open (and free) addressing andinvolving all audiences, from kids to elderlies, from tourists to sciencecommunicators
Collection of proposals for Science in the City and for PROESOF events from 2018to 2020 will be a task of the TESI Group

The Communication strategy for ESOF2020 TRIESTE wants to:
Tackle media coverage at national and international level, creating a discussion space about innovative projects and ideas in science communication and ensuring continuity with previous ESOF editions
Reinforce and develop communication networks with Public Institutions and scientific research centers in the enlarged ESOF2020 influence area
Link the industry communication networks

Agorà to invite/meet contributors from the enlarged Central Europeanarea
Lab of ideas to stimulate innovative proposals for 50-100 events
Operative tool to develop proposals and projects for PROESOF events and Science in the City:
• For the early PROESOF phase 2018-2019
• For preparation/submission of proposals through the regular call ESOF 2020 (in 2019)
• For “Science in the City” events, during the ESOF 2020 week

Each Area/Sub-Area will be supported by a student or a postgraduate secretary In the reviewing process, the members shall benefit from external referees

TESI CALL FOR PROPOSALS
An Open Call for ideas will be posted on the FIT website by mid Jan. 2018
The format and guidelines will image the ESOF format/evaluation criteria
Three options available: PROESOF, ESOF and Science in the City events
Periodic evaluations will be carried out by Area Programme Committee
Accepted proposals will be supported for development by TESI
Category 1 Criteria:
Interdisciplinary approach and, where relevant, policy perspectives
Potential to attract media interest
Diversity (appropriate balance of gender and maximise inclusivity)
Interactive sessions to maximise opportunities for discussion + dialogue
Proposals for innovative and international formats will be welcome
Category 2 Criteria:
Relevance to cross-cutting themes
Quality, originality and topicality in order to attract
International perspective: speakers/participants coming from different countries
All reviewers need to give a 1-4 grade on these 8 criteria. The proposal has then two average grades on the two categories.Final evaluation is based on the general average grade.
PROGRAMME COMMITTEE EVALUATION CRITERIA
First meeting of TESI Programme Committee is scheduled 13-15 Dec, 2017
The date will coincide with the official delivering of Sottostazione elettrica to FIT
The Agenda will focus on the discussion and agreement on:
• Internet access for the TESI programme and Call for ideas (FIT website)
• Format of the Call for Ideas and Proposals for each of the 5 areas
• Timing of the periodic evaluations of submitted proposals
• Support provided to approved proposals
• Scheduling of TESI meetings
• Guests to invite
• Any other business

The permanent network of interactions among Research Institutions, Industry, Policy and Society in the enlarged Eastern and Central European Area
The realization of an important Science Center for Technology and Innovation, at European level, shall be achieved in the Porto Vecchio. The center will represent an important infrastructure for scientific dissemination for EU countries, but not only
The network will foster inclusion and integration of Eastern Central European Countries and constitute a strong facilitator in the Adriatic-Danubian macro-region also for the connection with the Chinese Silk Road
