Maggio e’ un bel mese. I fiori sono in piena
fioritura.
Lei e’
riuscito a fare questo riconosciuto a livello nazionale
nei Stati Uniti nel 1914.
Festa della Mamma in Italia e’ stata celebrate per la prima volta il 12 Maggio 1957, nella citta di
Assisi, grazie all’iniziativa del Reverendo Otello Mig-
liosi, parroco della chiesa Tordibetto. Questa celebra-
zione e’ stata un tale successo che la festa della Mamma dell’anno successive e’ stata adottata in tutta
Italia. Si celebra la seconda Domenica di Maggio.
May is such beautiful month. The flowers are
in full bloom. It is synonymous with Mothers. I would like to wish all the mothers a Happy Mother’s Day!
On May 12, 1907, two years after her
mother's death, Anna Jarvis held a memorial to her
mother and thereafter embarked upon a campaign to make "Mother's Day" a recognized holiday. She suc-
ceeded in making this nationally recognized in 1914.
In the Roman Catholic Church, the holiday is
strongly associated with revering the Virgin Mary. In many Catholic homes, families have a special shrine
devoted to the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Mother’s Day in Italy was celebrated for the
first time on May 12, 1957, in the city of Assisi, thanks to the initiative of Rev. Otello Migliosi, parish priest of
the Tordibetto church. This celebration was so suc-
cessful that the following year Mother’s Day was
adopted throughout Italy. On December 18, 1958, a “proposa” was presented to the Italian Senate to make
the holiday official. It is also celebrated on the second
Sunday of May.
April started off with Cellini’s 45th Anniver-sary, Sapphire Gala Scholarship DD, in honor of our
IPP, Luigi Squillante, on April 5th at the Chateau Bri-
and. We had over 250 attendees; it was like a mini
convention. A great time was had by all. If you were-n’t there, you missed a gastronomical, as well as an
entertainment filled extravaganza, including your Presi-
dent singing the Star Spangled Banner solo and a
Volare duet with Giada Valenti. I know I shouldn’t quit my day job.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank
our honoree, Luigi, for a job well done during his ten-
ure. I would also like to thank Joe Sciame who was
relentless in his pursuit of journal ads and attendees,
and for his meticulous arrangement of the journal; and
his co-chairs, Alfonso and Anna Mulea and the rest of
the committee for all their hard work. They made it look so
easy. Also, thanks to Vinny Capasso for taking the photos. Next, we had the Grab Bag Bingo on April 11th.
This was also a lot of fun, and a grand time was had by all.
Thanks to Marta Nunziato and her committee for a splendid
job. The bus to Atlantic City on April 20 was at capacity and everyone had a great time. Thanks to Sal Squillante for lead-
ing the way.
Mother’s Day Brunch at the Douglaston Club on
April 21st was a gastronomical delight. As I said, Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers. Thanks to Joanne Grossman
and her committee for organizing this event. A beautiful way
to celebrate Mother’s Day.

IN SYMPATHY
Cellini Members all acknowledged the passing of long time 25 year member; Ralph Fallarino, of Floral Park. Ralph was 95 years of age several days before his passing. A World War II
hero and a great family man, he was highly respected by friends and neighbors, and family most.
At the wake services, Cellini Lodge President Vincent Illuzzi presided, and attended by Juliette and Anthony Milazzo and Joseph Sciame. President Vincent led the services with Juliette
as Chaplain, and Joe Sciame shared some thoughts about Ralph's life, his many years of membership in the Cellini Lodge
and his contributions to society in the military and family life of America. The Cellini lodge will name a brick for him to be placed at the historic Garibaldi Meucci Museum on Staten Is-
land. May Ralph Fallarino rest in peace!

PRESIDENT’S SALUTE TO LUIGI SQUILLANTE by Vincent R. Illuzzi
It feels like old-times day because we have present here tonight the
hall of fame of the NYS OSIA.
NYS OSIA has provided more than its fair share of national presi-
dents; we are privileged to have with us tonight, the sitting national
president and two past national presidents. Come August who knows
when the next time will be that the national president will hail from
NY.
Does anyone know what the supreme leader of the Raccoon Lodge
from the Honeymooners is called? … The high exalted mystic ruler!
I am honored to introduce our supreme leader, four raps, (don’t think I
will have the privilege of doing this again after tonight) for National
President Joe DiTrapani and First Lady Carol.
Among the guests we have Cellini’s own Joe Sciame, who was Na-
tional President during OSIA’s centennial; Peter R. Zuzolo and wife
Edie; NY State President Tom Lupo and First Lady Barbara; IPP Sal
Lanzilotta and Nancy DiFiore Quinn, and their spouses.
National officers, state officers, lodge presidents, members, family
and guests:
I will be very brief because I couldn’t “find much to say” about Luigi,
but don’t worry it’s the quality of words, and not the quantity that
counts.
You don’t become IPP by good looks alone. You have to strive for it
by working your way up the ladder and you have to want to do it.
You will not succeed by being led by the hand. I did say UP the lad-
der because it is an UPHILL climb which requires hard work, invest-
ment of time, and expenditure with a smile.
I’ve known Luigi since we both joined Cellini some 11-12 years ago.
He has always been involved, with a never ending quest to do more.
Climbing up right behind him, I was hoping that I would be able to
keep up with his pace. I have been very fortunate, in that I have had
Luigi to follow.
Luigi is recognized for his efforts and talents on all three tiers of
OSIA. While President, currently, he is one of the Commissioners of
the Garibaldi-Meucci Museum, as well as a Mason.
I firmly believe that, if he wants it, Luigi will one day be NY State
Grand Lodge President, and rise through the national ranks to become
OSIA’s Supreme Leader, the “high exalted mystic ruler.”
Luigi, it’s an honor to be your successor, and I hope I can fill your
shoes. I hope I can be half as good a president as you have been.
Nell’unita c’e’ forza!
LORENZO DA PONTE 1749-1838
Opera Librettist, Poet, Teacher, and First Jewish Priest
of the Roman Catholic Church
by Lynn Marino
Lorenzo Da Ponte was born Emanuele Conegliano in Ceneda, Italy,
which was then called the Republic of Venice. Jewish by birth, he was the
eldest of three sons. In 1764 his widower father Geronimo Conegliano con-verted himself and his children to Roman Catholicism in order to remarry.
Emanuele took the name of Lorenzo Da Ponte, the name of the bishop that baptized him, and the illiterate young man came under the sponsorship of the
Bishop, receiving a classical education at Ceneda seminary. When the Bishop
died, Da Ponte moved to another seminary, received Minor Orders, became a Professor of Literature and was ordained a priest in 1773. He pursued his
creative talents and moved to Venice where he taught Italian, Latin and
French and wrote poetry. Here the poet-priest assumed a libertine lifestyle and became fast friends and caroused with the most renowned adventurer and
libertine of the time, Giacomo Casanova. Da Ponte’s affair with a married woman resulted in his being charged and found guilty of immoral behavior,
and he was banished from Venice.
After relocating to Austria in 1781 where he enjoyed the cultural
patronage of nobles, he obtained a letter of introduction to composer Antonio Salieri, who helped him to secure the position of librettist to the Italian Thea-
tre in Vienna and eventually the patronage of Wolfgang Mozart’s benefactor,
a wealthy banker. Thereafter, Da Ponte collaborated as librettist for both Salieri and Mozart, writing lyrics for Mozart’s three most famous operas,
“Cosi Fan Tutte,” “Marriage of Figaro” and “Don Giovanni.” Opera
“buffa” (comic opera) was his specialty. Losing his patronage when Austria changed emperors, he went to London in 1803, becoming librettist at Kings
Theater.
In 1805, in debt and bankruptcy, he fled to the United States at age
56, along with his mistress and children, and ended up in New York City. He found a friend in Clement Clark Moore, writer of the famous poem “Twas the
Night before Christmas”, who helped him gain appointment as the first pro-
fessor of Italian Literature at Columbia College (now University). He was the first Roman Catholic priest appointed to the faculty and the first priest to
have been born a Jew. He produced Mozart’s opera “Don Giovanni”in Man-hattan in 1825, and introduced Gioachino Rossini’s music in the United
States through a concert tour. In 1828, at the age of 79, he became a natural-
ized US citizen and in 1833 at the age of 84, founded the first opera house in the United States, the New York Opera Company. The NY Opera Company
lasted only two seasons due to poor business acumen, but it was the predeces-
sor of the New York Metropolitan Opera and the Academy of Music Opera House. Da Ponte enjoyed the distinction of being the first teacher in America
to lecture on Dante’s “Divina Commedia” (“Divine Comedy”) and he tutored students in Italian poetry, music and painting.
Da Ponte died in 1838 in Manhattan and a grand funeral was held at the Old Saint Patrick’s Cathedral on Mulberry Street for a man who lived
royally most of his life, but died poor. He was buried in the Roman Catholic
Cemetery at East Eleventh Street, which at the time, was considered outside of the city. In 1909, all human remains in the cemetery were exhumed and
relocated to Calvary Cemetery in Queens, and those of Da Ponte were no
longer identifiable. In 1987, to commemorate the 150th anniversary of his death, a group of people gathered at Calvary Cemetery to acknowledge his
life and contributions and to dedicate a granite monument in his name, the placement which is right under the Kosciuzko Bridge. It is ironic that the
world still doesn’t know the exact location of the remains of either Da Ponte
or Mozart, who collaborated on some of the world’s most beloved operas. Noted British biographer Anthony Holden’s book on Da Ponte “The Man
Who Wrote Mozart”, came out in 2006, timed to coincide with the 250th anniversary of Mozart’s birth. In his time, Da Ponte wrote librettos for 28
operas by 11 composers, and his poetic skill lent itself greatly to the successes
of Mozart’s operatic masterpieces. Born in Italy and living the second half of his life in America, perhaps Lorenzo Da Ponte’s greatest contribution was the
role he played in the introduction of Italian opera and culture to America.
ADRIANA TRIGIANI
by Diana Musso Servinskas
Adriana Trigiani, a best-selling Italian- American au-
thor, was honored at the annual CSJ Dinner Dance on Feb.17,
2013 at Russo’s on the Bay. Raised in southwest Virginia, in a
large Italian family, her novels have been translated in over 35
countries around the world. Adriana’s first novel, Big Stone
Gap, published in 2001, is based on her Appalachian childhood.
Many of her novels are fictionalized versions of her family’s
life and experiences both in the United States and in Italy and
are filled with colorful and heart-warming characters. A pro-
lific author, she is also an award-winning playwright, television
writer, and documentary film producer and director. Her TV
work includes “The Cosby Show” and “Citykids”. In the past
12 years, Adriana has written 14 books, including Lucia, Lucia,
The Queen of the Big Time, and Brava, Valentine all topping
the bestseller lists.
In 1996 this talented Italian-American role model won
awards at the Hamptons International Film Festival and the
Palm Springs International Film Festival for The Queen of the
Big Time.
Her latest novel, The Shoemaker’s Wife, the story of
her maternal grandparents’ love story published last year,
evoked this response from Kathryn Stockett, author of the best-
seller, The Help: “I don’t know how Adriana goes into her
family’s attic and emerges with these amazing stories, I’m just
happy she does.”
For me and my sister-in-law, meeting her at the CSJ Dinner-
Dance was a delight…she is as funny and enjoyable as her
characters, and no surprise that she has a passionate fan club at
www.adrianatrigiani.com.
For me, she brings to life so many traditions that I was
raised with that I can almost feel my Sicilian grandparents enter
the room. When the Mother in The Queen of the Big Time, tells
her oldest daughter that she must get married first because
that’s tradition, I immediately saw my Mother’s Mom, with her
apron on in the kitchen, telling me the same thing. I laughed out
loud and savored the memory. (What Grandma didn’t tell me
then was that she was the first in her family to violate this tradi-
tion, as she was the third oldest daughter and my Great-
Grandparents tried to persuade my Grandfather to marry their
older daughters, but his mind was already made up.)

Viva San Giuseppe! Viva San Giuseppe! Viva San Giuseppe!
COMMENTS by Gina Ferrara
Worthy National President, Joe DiTrapani, worthy State President Tom Lupo, National and State Officers, Lodge representatives
members and guests… ten years ago I met Luigi as he joined the Cellini Lodge. From the beginning I knew he would be an asset to Cellini.
Quickly understanding his potential and drive, we asked him to join our Executive Committee as financial secretary, a position he
gladly accepted. Luigi and I have worked together following each other up the ranks of Cellini. I knew I could always rely on him,
and he knew he could always rely on me. His potential was obvious even to those outside Cellini Lodge.
Luigi has worked with various lodges and state OSIA officials on many committees including; Columbus Day parades, state mem-bership, national and state raffle and autism. Even today, he is
working with the state OSIA on revamping their website.
During his presidency Luigi was asked to serve as Treasurer and then co-chair to the District II President’s Council.
COMMENTS
by Alfonso Squillante
Let me start by saying how proud my family and I are of brother
Luigi. My family has always been very proud of our Italian heritage.
My parents have instilled a sense of pride and respect for our culture,
in which, I believe led my brother to join the Sons of Italy and, more
specifically, the Cellini Lodge.
I ask that you take a moment to read his bio in an effort to truly un-
derstand how proud we are of him and his accomplishments.
I am not sure how many of you know how my father and I joined
Cellini. My brother was the first to join, and I have to admit, when
he told me he was joining, my sisters and I loved to tease him about
it. Not because he joined Cellini, but just that he had joined a
“lodge.”
I asked him if he had to wear a koon skin hat and wave its tail while
greeting other members, much as Ralph Kramdon did in the Honey-
mooners.
My dad gave in after a year and joined; it took him three years to get
me in the door, and to be honest I only gave in because I thought I
would go to one meeting and that’s it. But like him, I also fell in
love with the people and what the lodge and OSIA stood for. Well,
the rest is history. I finally saw what he had seen and what he had
already loved.
When my brother believes in something, he gives it one hundred per-
cent, and Cellini and OSIA is something he truly believes in.
I now understood that all those years of pushing was because he was
trying to bring his OSIA family and his home family together.
With that, it is with great pride that my family and I introduce to you,
your 2013, well deserved honoree, Cellini Immediate Past President
Luigi Squillante.
GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP – 2013
The Cellini Charitable Foundation, Inc. will once again award a
graduate/professional scholarship award. The amount of the
award is $1,000 and will be presented on a competitive basis,
which is, chosen by academic standing among those eligible ap-
plications received and accepted by the scholarship committee.
The scholarship award is open to any eligible graduate student
seeking a degree above the Baccalaureate level, enrolled at an
accredited college or university, and accepted into an educational
program leading to a degree above the Baccalaureate received or
to be received upon graduation from the college or university at-

FOR THOSE OF ITALIAN DESCENT
OR ANYONE YOU KNOW
Next time you or your friends are watching a rerun of the Sopranos or the Jersey Shore, and they think we Italian Americans are all about or-
ganized crime, remember this:
My roots are deep in an ancient soil, drenched by the Mediterranean sun, and watered by pure streams from snowcapped mountains. I
am enriched by thousands of years of culture. My hands are those of the mason, the artist, the man of the soil. My thoughts have been re-
counted in the annals of Rome, the poetry of Virgil, the creations of Dante, and the philosophy of Benedetto Croce. We are Italian-American,
and from my ancient world, I first spanned the seas to the New World. I am Cristoforo Colombo.
I am Giovanni Caboto known in American History as John Cabot, discoverer of the mainland of North America.
I am Amerigo Vespucci, who gave my name to the New World, “America.”
First to sail on the Great Lakes in 1679, founder of the territory that became the State of Illinois, colonizer of Louisiana and Arkan-
sas, I am Enrico Tonti.
I am Filippo Mazzei friend of Thomas Jefferson, and my thesis on the equality of man was written into the Bill of Rights.
I am William Paca, signer of the Declaration of Independence.
I am an Italian-American; I financed the Northwest Expedition of George Rogers Clark and accompanied him through the lands that
would become Ohio, Indiana, Wisconsin and Michigan. I am Colonel Francesco Vigo.
I mapped the Pacific from Mexico to Alaska and to the Philippines; I am Alessandro Malaspina.
I am Giacomo Belinimi, discoverer of the source of the Mississippi River in 1823.
I created the Dome of the United States Capitol. They call me the Michelangelo of America. I am Constantino Brumidi.
In 1904, I founded in San Francisco, the Bank of Italy now known as the Bank of America, the largest financial institution in the world; I am
A. P. Giannini.
I am Enrico Fermi, father of nuclear science in America. I am Steve Geppi, founder of Diamond Comics, the largest distributorship of
comics on the planet.
I am the first enlisted man to earn the Medal of Honor in World War II; I am John Basilone of New Jersey.
I am a West Point Graduate; I led NASA’s Apollo Launch Team in launching America’s Astronauts with Cmdr Neil Armstrong to
become the first men on the Moon in 1969, as pledged by President John F. Kennedy in 1961; I am Rocco A. Petrone.
I am the millions whose names are enshrined in military cemeteries from Guadalcanal to the Rhine. I am the steel maker in Pitts-
burgh, the grower in the Imperial Valley of California, the textile designer in Manhattan, the movie maker in Hollywood the homemaker and
the breadwinner in over 10,000 communities.
My heritage has dedicated me to this nation. I am proud of my heritage, and I shall remain worthy of it. But, above all I am an Italian-
American!!!
