INFORMATION ABOUT CELTA COURSE

Who is CELTA for?

CELTA is suitable for those with little or no teaching experience. It is suitable for anyone who wishes to teach English as a foreign language to adults or work in ELT within the UK or overseas. Candidates come from all walks of life. Many are recent university graduates, but others are already qualified as teachers of other subjects or are professionals looking for a change of career or rewarding career break. Most candidates see CELTA as the starting point of a long-term career in English language teaching. For students working on their gap year, CELTA is a passport to teaching overseas and an ideal way to travel the world whilst developing new skills.

Can anyone enrol on a CELTA course ?

You do not need formal qualifications or any previous teaching experience to enrol on our CELTA course. We recommend that you should have a good standard of education equivalent to that required for higher education. You do not need to have English as your first language, but must have a good understanding of English that will enable you to teach at a range of levels.

About University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations

CELTA is part of a family of professional and academic examinations run by Cambridge ESOL. The Cambridge ESOL examinations are known all over the world and are recognised by universities, employers and national education authorities in many countries. They are managed by the University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate (UCLES) - one of the world's largest and best known educational assessment agencies.

What should I do before the course starts?

When you enrol on a course we will send you a pre-course task and a pre-course reading list – this will give you an awareness of all the CELTA course themes.

What does the CELTA course cover?

The CELTA course is designed for people with little or no previous teaching experience.

During the course, you will develop familiarity with the principles of effective teaching and a range of practical skills for teaching English to adult learners.

The course includes teaching practice, observation of experienced teachers in the classroom and completion of a range of practically focused written assignments.

You will receive training and support from fully qualified and experienced ELT professionals. You will also have access to library resources including professional books, publications, multimedia titles and Internet access.

Is there an examination?

You are assessed continuously during the course and there is no final examination. An external assessor, who is appointed by University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate (UCLES) moderates each course.

There are three components of assessment: Teaching Practice, Written Assignments and Professional Development. We will help you prepare thoroughly for each assessment.

Kadikoy is a beautiful district of Istanbul set on the shores of the Marmara sea. It has been one of the fastest growing districts in Istanbul for the last 20 years. . It has been one of the fastest growing districts in Istanbul for the last 20 years. This is the site of the ancient village of Chalcedon. Later many monasteries were built on this site and the early Christian Ecumenical Council met here several times in the 5th century. Only a few of the later mansions set in beautiful gardens have survived to our day. Yacht clubs, marinas and wide roads line the shores of Kadikoy. Fenerbahce is an ideal place for picnics and promenades. The Baghdad Avenue is famous for the shopping opportunities it offers. On the Uskudar side of the district, there is the Haydarpasa Railway Station built in 1906 in the Prussian architectural style. This was the first (or last) stop of the Istanbul-Baghdad railway. The cemeteries and monuments for the British and French soldiers who lost their lives in the Crimean War are situated on the slopes near the station, next to the large military hospital. There are two colossal buildings behind the commercial port facilities. The one with the clock tower, the former Haydarpasa High School, now houses a section of the university. The second building with four big towers is the Selimiye Barracks. “What I found most useful about the CELTA course was the evaluation of my own teaching as I was given the opportunity to practice with real students. The theoretical or abstract limitations normally imposed by an instructional classroom environment were removed and I was critiqued on the basis of my real performance as a teacher. In other words, for a total of six teaching practice hours, I became a genuine tutor working with real learners. CELTA F.A.Q. 1. What are TEFL and TESOL and how do they relate to CELTA? TEFL is a relatively old term referring to qualifications for English language teachers and a general

umbrella term for the industry. It stands for Teaching English as a Foreign Language. – The

forerunner to CELTA was Cert.TEFLA (Certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language to

Adults). ‘English Language Teaching’ (ELT) is now a more widely used term than TEFL.

TESOL stands for Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, and is often associated with

the Trinity College, London Cert.TESOL teaching qualification. The Cambridge CELTA certificate is

probably the best-known and most widely taken initial TEFL qualification in the world. Cert.TESOL is

another well-known qualification. Both CELTA and Cert.TESOL are internationally recognised and

highly regarded and lead to the same level of qualification. The main differences (other than being

awarded by different examining bodies), are:

• The Cambridge CELTA course includes a session on an unknown language to give trainees an

insight into how students may feel when learning English. On Trinity TESOL courses there is more

emphasis placed on an ‘unknown natural language’ assignment, which counts towards 10% of the

total assessment. • Cambridge CELTA candidates receive a pass grade A, pass grade B, pass grade

or fail from the centre and from Cambridge. Trinity TESOL certificates do not carry a grade, although

individual centres can themselves provide grades to candidates. • On a Cambridge CELTA course, a

Cambridge appointed assessor, together with a course tutor, may observe teaching practice. There is

no test at the end of the CELTA course. On a Trinity TESOL course, a Trinity appointed moderator

interviews each course member individually and in a small group. The moderator also assesses one

of the course assignments, usually the Materials Assignment. As well as meeting the moderator,

trainees must take a Language Awareness test in the final week of the course.

2. What books can I read before the course? There is no official reading list but here are some useful titles to help you with grammar and teaching

methodology:

3. Does it matter if I miss any part of the course? Yes, it does matter if you miss any part of the course due to the intensive nature and comparative

brevity of the course. 100% attendance is expected unless there are unavoidable and unforeseeable

circumstances. The Cambridge rules state that if you miss more than 20% of the whole course or any

of the six hours of assessed teaching practice, you will not be eligible to pass the course.

4. How demanding is the course? How much extra study will I have to do at home? The course is extremely demanding as it covers a great deal of content in just four weeks on the

full-time course. The part-time course can be just as demanding. There is a minimum of 120 hours

training. On average, you should expect to do at least a further four hours’ work in your own time,

every night. You will be expected to prepare your lessons, create materials and write a lesson plan for

every lesson. You must also complete four assignments during the course, as well as do any

necessary background reading and research. To be eligible to pass the course, candidates are

required to attend all input sessions, teach classes for at least six hours at two different language

levels, observe experienced teachers for at least six hours and maintain and submit a portfolio of all

assessed written work and materials relating to teaching practice.

5. How qualified are the Oxford House College CELTA trainers? All our trainers have the DELTA diploma and are qualified teacher trainers, with extensive experience

of English language teaching in a range of contexts, both in the UK and overseas. All our trainers

regularly update their skills and expertise and so can offer you advice on a broad range of topics,

including your own teaching methods, helpful ideas for teaching activities and how to go about

securing employment after you complete your course. They will also support you at every step of the

way throughout the course, providing individual and group tutorials to ensure you are progressing well

and to help you if you have any problems.

6. What are my job prospects after the course? Will you help me find employment? Once you pass the CELTA course, you will be qualified to teach English as a foreign language in the

UK and abroad. The teaching industry is busy all year round and it should be reasonably easy to find

work after the course, although it can be seasonal and is definitely at its busiest in the UK during the

summer months. We increase our teaching staff by about 20% in summer so we encourage trainees

to leave their C.V. with us after the course. The busy periods vary from country to country, for

example, in most of Europe, the busiest periods are September and January but in South America,

the busiest period starts in March. Job prospects for qualified ELT teachers are excellent. There is a

growing demand for teachers worldwide as English becomes a universal language of business,

tourism and communication.

During the course there will be a careers input session with advice about finding an appropriate first

teaching position and subsequent career development. Often we have a guest speaker during that

session who talks about their company or college and the various teaching locations they are familiar

with. If a lot of the trainees on the course are interested in teaching in South East Asia, for example,

we might invite a representative of English First, an organisation which has schools in Malaysia,

Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam. Our tutors are always on hand to answer any questions you have,

including advice on useful websites and the presentation of your C.V. We also have a jobs bulletin

board with up-to-date information about teaching positions available around the world. Several large

international colleges and companies advertise their vacancies through us, such as, Shane, Saxon

court, International House, SKOLA and Bell International.

7. Can I teach children with the CELTA qualification? Yes, you can teach children with the CELTA qualification, even though it is a qualification primarily

aimed at learning how to teach adults. In fact, it is quite likely that if you decide to teach abroad, you

will be expected to teach children as well as adults. In this case, you should be given on-the-job

training. If you are particularly interested in teaching children, it is possible to do a Young Learner

extension to the CELTA course. This is a 2 to 2.5-week course. Although we do not provide this at our

8. What do you offer in terms of professional development after the course? Once you have completed your course with us, you will automatically become a member of our

Seminar Club. This monthly event is the ideal opportunity to listen to celebrated ELT speakers talking

about developments in teaching methodology and practice. Sessions combine theory with practice.

Previous speakers include Michael Swan, Mike McCarthy, Susan Kay and Mario Rinvolucri.

When you have had at least two years’ full-time teaching experience teaching a variety of nationalities

and levels, you can apply to take the Cambridge DELTA diploma course at Oxford House College.

The DELTA qualification will greatly improve your long-term ELT career prospects. The course will

help you further develop your knowledge of methodology and how to incorporate new teaching ideas

into your own teaching. You can also expect to earn more. Once you have passed the DELTA course,

it is possible to start training to become a teacher trainer.

Once we receive your form it will be checked to ensure it meets our requirements. If so, you will be

contacted by telephone or e-mail to arrange a test and interview at a mutually convenient time. The

interview will take place with other candidates, unless you cannot come to London. In this case, we

can arrange a telephone interview. This stage is essential to assess your language awareness skills,

teaching ideas and interaction with others. We will then inform you of the outcome within a few days.

We do not accept payment before a place on a course has been offered.

Terms and Conditions Please note that enrolment on our courses is subject to the following terms and conditions:

1. Deposits are non-refundable.

2. You must pay the balance of your course fees no later than 15 working days before your course

begins. Otherwise, you may be placed on a reserve list and risk losing your place. We will make

other arrangements for you if yours is a late booking or your interview date is within 3 weeks of the

start of your course.

3. Course postponement fees: if you postpone the starting date of your course giving more than 4

weeks notice - no penalty; giving between 2 and 4 weeks notice - you will forfeit your original

course fee deposit, which must be paid again; giving less than 2 weeks notice - you will forfeit your

deposit and £150 of your course fee, which must be paid again.

You also lose the Accommodation Finding Fee and Homestay deposit (if applicable) if you book

accommodation in London and give less than 7 days’ notice of cancellation.

4. Course cancellation fees: if you cancel your course more than 4 weeks before the course starts -

full refund of course fees; if you cancel you course between 2 and 4 weeks before the course

starts - 50% refund of course fees; if you cancel your course less than 2 weeks before the course

starts – no refund of course fees.

You also lose the Accommodation Finding Fee and Homestay deposit (if applicable) if you book

accommodation in London and give less than 7 day’s notice of cancellation.

5. Please note that there are no refunds if you leave the course once it has started. However, in the

case of extreme or unavoidable circumstances such as serious illness, we may allow you to join a

later course upon payment of a second course deposit (£150). It will be at the College’s absolute

discretion to deem whether or not the circumstances were extreme or unavoidable. The date for

joining a later course would be mutually agreed between you and Oxford House College. Courses

may only be deferred once

6. The College cannot be held responsible for the loss or theft of personal belongings.
