In a time of creative overload in the illustration field, Bruno Grizzo has carved a unique signature that sets him apart from the pack. His years of experience as a fashion designer feed into his success as a fashion illustrator. Bruno truly defines the meaning of a multi-media artist. With an instinctual creative vision, he photographs and illustrates, combining still life & fashion photography, collage, painting, watercolor, as well as pencil & ink drawing. The result is sophisticated, cutting edge, original, and authentic.

Bruno Grizzo is a Brazilian native who lives and works in New York City. He received his BFA from Ohio’s Columbus College of Art & Design then began his career as a fashion designer. After working for Lanvin in Paris, Calvin Klein, and Frank Tignino in New York, he launched his eponymous clothing label in 2006, for which he won two Gen Art awards. The collection was sold all over the world including luxury stores in Korea, Saudi Arabia, Japan, and Barneys New York.

His exclusive roster of clients include Tiffany & Co, Saks 5th Avenue, Halston, Hankyu Japan, Kate Spade, Miller’s Oath, Georg Jensen, Ann Taylor, Jeffrey and Coach. His work has been featured in Viktor Magazine, Lucky, S, and Surface, where he collaborated with magazine editors on concepts and art direction as well. Most recently, he worked on a fine-jewelry editorial as a contributing editor for Town & Country magazine combining his own still life photography and illustration. With a keen understanding of branding, Bruno’s approach is tailored to the unique needs of each project and client.

Did you always want to be an artist? No, I wanted to be a fashion designer, but changed my mind once I had my own business.

What was your earlierst creative memory? I had fun playing in sandboxes in kindergarten, I remember being quite imaginative then.

Tell us about your family in Brazil. I grew up in a big family; we were 4 siblings very close in age. My father is a pediatric surgeon, so my mom ran the household. There was always a lot going on at home, because of the proximity in age we always played a lot and of course had a lot of drama hap-pening at the same time.

How did you find yourself in New York? I moved to NY after a brief yearlong stay in Paris where I had gone to intern at Lanvin. I liked Paris but always wanted to live in NY so I moved to the US.

What inspires you the most? Artists.

Do you listen to music while you paint and if so, what music most sparks your creativity? Sometimes I do, sometimes I like to work in si-lence. Music influences my mood and at times I want to have a neutral mindset without it.

How has your artwork changed or developed over the years? It’s always changing, and I really like that. I also like to try different mediums, I like to experiment, it keeps my interest going. Right now I am working with photography, animation, as well as ceramics.

Describe your creative process. I think quite a lot about each project or whatever it is I want to do. There is always some research. But when I de-cide it’s time to exectue it, I leave a lot of room for change and space for something else to come up.

Tell us one thing about you that nobody knows. You’ll continue to not know it :)

If a Hollywood film were to be made about your life, who would play the lead role? George Clooney? Or Meryl Streep? I can’t decide. Maybe both

When did you first fall in love? I was 12 or 13, on a summer vacation with a childhood girlfriend. I thought it was love—maybe it was something else…like I wanted to be her. LOL

What inspired you to become an illustrator? It hap-pened by accident. My best friend is an art director and he was working on a Look Book for Halston when they relaunched. It was an illustrated Look Book, and the illustrator they were working with didn’t work out at the last minute. He asked me to do some tests and I had to complete the entire project over the weekend. That’s how it started. Describe your work environment/studio. My studio at home is an all white space, minimal, except for my mess. I have great daylight and get direct sunlight in the mornings, which is quite beautiful.

What song would you choose as the soundtrack to your life? Beethovens 9th Symphony—it has a great build up to a climax, then it goes down into an odd period before a happy ending, that sums it up well!

If you were to share one piece of advice what would that be? It’s not about you.

What is currently playing on your ipod? I have been listening to a lot classical music, with breaks in between with Ty Segall, Suuns, and Os Mutantes.

If you could trade places with one person for a day, who would that person be? I’d like to see what a day would be like for a politician, maybe the president. The head of state.

What is your dream project? To make an animation film.

You have done many things in life, what have you not done yet? I want to sail around the world.
