Cari lettori, una notizia buona c’è: i dati Istat ci dicono che il turismo nei borghi è in crescita e che il 45 per cento delle presenze turistiche viene dall’estero. Tra tutti i problemi che ha il nostro Paese, manca quello di non essere attrattivo. Un esempio? Nel mese di

marzo la piccola Monte Isola sul lago d’Iseo - duemila abitanti e zero automobili - si è classificata terza al concorso European Best Destination 2019 davanti a Vienna e Parigi. Segno che è conosciu-ta in tutta Europa, probabilmente anche grazie al fatto di aver ospita-to nel 2016 l’installazione del celebre artista Christo, dimostrando che

bellezza e cultura sono un’accoppiata vincente. Sfogliando le pagine di questo numero della rivista, vedete quante

e quali meraviglie sono sparse nella Penisola: dal Barocco che è anima, cuore, forma e stile della Sicilia, regione sospesa tra la luce

e il lutto, come scriveva Gesualdo Bufalino, alla Valle d’Itria, in Puglia, dove le case intonacate di bianco, i trulli, i muretti a secco, le distese di ulivi disegnano un paesaggio agrario che digrada verso il mare, tra i più belli del Mediterraneo. In Valle d’Itria i visitatori stranieri rappresentano già il 60 per cento del totale, e cominciano a porsi problemi dal punto di vista dell’offerta turistica, così ampia

da rischiare un abbassamento della qualità. Questi territori sono un modello di sostenibilità ed è per questo che sono apprezzati.

Sedersi in una piazzetta, prendere un aperitivo, circondati da edifici medievali o da balconi barocchi, vedere scendere le ombre della sera

mentre si accendono le luci dei lampioni: solo l’Italia può regalare queste emozioni.

Bisogna però guardare in faccia la realtà: molti borghi, soprattutto nelle aree più interne, si spopolano, sono abbandonati e perdono i servizi essenziali come la banca, le poste, la scuola. Solo il turismo, sostiene il presidente de I Borghi più belli d’Italia, Fiorello Primi, può portare nuova linfa ai piccoli paesi. E il ritorno dei giovani,

che possono aprire ristoranti, agriturismi, dedicarsi al restauro, alle ristrutturazioni degli edifici, lavorare con le nuove tecnologie, là

dove non c’è bisogno di recarsi ogni giorno in ufficio o in azienda per svolgere la propria attività. A questo proposito, abbiamo

intervistato uno dei più noti progettisti italiani, Marco Piva, architetto e designer di fama internazionale, per capire come si possano rilanciare i borghi. Serve, ci ha detto, una strategia generale e

condivisa a livello nazionale, da calare nelle realtà locali. Qui bisogna costruire una filiera di rapporti in grado di creare opportunità,

collegamenti, percorsi a tema, capaci di attrarre turisti con capacità di spesa e investitori. Così sarà possibile procedere al restauro e

alla riqualificazione dell’immenso patrimonio immobiliare a rischio degrado. Un grande lavoro da fare, che parte dalla “narrazione” dei borghi, dal racconto della bellezza a due passi da casa, a cui, nel suo

piccolo, la nostra rivista si dedica da tre anni e mezzo.

THE VILLAGES AND THE ARCHITECTUREDear readers, there is good news: Istat data tells us that tourism in the villages is growing and that 45 percent of tourists come from abroad. Of all the problems that has our country, there isn’t the one of not being attractive. An example? In March the small village of Monte Isola on the Iseo lake- two thousand inhabitants and zero cars - was ranked third in the European Best Destination 2019 competition, before Vienna and Paris. A sign that it is known throughout Europe, probably thanks to the fact that it hosted the installation of the famous artist Christo in 2016, demonstrating that beauty and culture are a winning combination.Leafing through the pages of this issue of the magazine, you see how many marvels are scattered in the Peninsula: from the Baroque which is the soul, heart, form and style of Sicily, a region suspended between light and mourning, as Gesualdo Bufalino wrote, to the Valle d ‘Itria, in Puglia, where the whitewashed houses, the trulli, the dry stone walls, the expanses of olive trees draw a landscape that slopes down to the sea, among the most beautiful in the Mediterranean area. In the Valle d’Itria, foreign visitors already account for 60 percent of the total, and problems begin to come up regarding the tourist offer, so wide as risking a drop in quality. These territories are model of sustainability and that is why they are appreciated. Sit in a small square, have an aperitif, surrounded by medieval buildings or baroque balconies, see the shadows of the evening descend as the street lights come on: only Italy can give these emotions.

But we must face the reality: many villages, especially in the inland areas, become depopulated, abandoned and lose essential services such as the bank, the post office, the school. Only tourism, says the President of The Most Beautiful Italian Villages of Italy, Fiorello Primi, can bring new life to small countries.

And the return of young people, who can open restaurants, farms, devote themselves to restoration, renovation of buildings, work with new technologies, where there is no need to go to the office every day to carry on with their activities. Speaking on which, we have interviewed one of the most famous Italian designers, Marco Piva, an internationally kwon architect, to understand how the villages can be reintroduced. We need, he told us, a general and shared strategy at national level, to be implemented in local situations. Here we need to build a set of links able to create opportunities, connections, themed routes, able to attracting tourists with spending capacities and investors. So it will be possible to proceed with the restoration and redevelopment of the immense real estate heritage at risk of degradation. A great job to do, which starts from the “narration” of the villages, from the story of the Beauty a stone’s throw from home, to which, in its small way, our magazine has been dedicated for three and a half years.

«Questo Barocco siciliano, quale lo si vede a Catania, ad Acireale, a Noto, per dire solo i luoghi dove eccelle di più, è diverso da tutti gli altri, e non si può confonderlo né con quello spagnolo né con quello chiamato coloniale». Era il 1955, quando lo scrittore, saggista e giornalista vicentino Guido Piovene (1907-1974), durante un suo viaggio in Sicilia, scrisse queste parole sul Barocco siciliano che non esitò a descrivere come «solido nella struttura, ma tutto ricamato, direi trapunto, nelle finestre, nei balconi, nelle balaustre e le grate; ha capricci, fantasie, lirismi che si direbbero moreschi; ha romanticismi claustrali, delicatezze voluttuose».La Sicilia conobbe Piovene nella fase intermedia della sua vita artistica, che dal controverso psicologismo passò

THE SICILIAN BAROQUE ACCORDING TO PIOVENE«This Sicilian Baroque, as seen in Catania, in Acireale, in Noto, to say only the places where it excels the most, is different from all the others, and it cannot be confused either with the Spanish one or with the one called colonial» . It was 1955, when the writer, essayist and journalist from Vicenza, Guido Piovene (1907-1974), during a journey to Sicily, wrote these words about the Sicilian baroque style that he did not hesitate to describe as «solid in structure, but all embroidered, I would say quilted, in the windows, in the balconies, in the balustrades and the gratings; it has whims, fantasies, lyricisms that could be Moorish; has a monastic romanticism, voluptuous elegance». Sicily met Piovene in the intermediate phase of his artistic life, between the first and the second period, which passed from the controversial psychologism to the mature existentialism that led him to win the Strega prize in 1970. He was a subtle investigator of complicated and

al maturo esistenzialismo che lo portò a vincere nel 1970 il premio Strega, quale sottile indagatore di complicate e ambigue situazioni sentimentali e dei chiaroscuri dell’animo umano, in quel lungo periodo in cui si dedicò alla sua attività di viaggiatore e saggista infaticabile durante il quale pubblicò “De America” (1953), la sofisticata “Madame la France” (1966) e “Viaggio in Italia”.Non nascondeva la sua predilezione per le città barocche, e fu tra i primi viaggiatori a dare risalto a questo stile con una sua idea ben precisa: «Davanti alle fontane, o davanti a una facciata tutto mi appare in una luce più positiva e più vitale; in un tempo nel quale prendevano tanto respiro le scienze naturali e fisiche, il Barocco fu come una traduzione nell’arte dello slancio che portava l’uomo a conoscere la natura, sperimentarla, interpretarla, viaggiarla, per poi meravigliarsi delle proprie scoperte; si direbbe che, nel Barocco, l’artista voglia trasformarsi in acqua, fuoco, leone, serpente, gemma, paese esotico, per sperimentare se stesso sotto cento travestimenti, sorprendersi e stupirsi con le proprie trasformazioni. Questo gusto dell’universo genera in altri la ricerca scientifica; il Barocco lo consuma rapido in un fuoco d’immaginazione; è il grande prologo fantastico alla civiltà scientifica ed ai tempi moderni”.Per lo scrittore vicentino, in Sicilia questo stile veniva da un popolo che esprimeva nel Barocco la sua indole, non in una fase del gusto, ma in tutta la propria storia. «Perfino i templi greci sono intrisi di un barocchismo naturale; in esso quel popolo porta un raro sapore esotico, riflesso d’oriente; è insomma un barocco non freddo, bensì vitale, ardente, ricco di sogno». A Catania si soffermava per la via dei Crociferi che «per gli amanti del Barocco, tra i quali mi ascrivo, tengono questa via come una delle più attraenti d’Italia»; e indugiava nella chiesa

di San Benedetto, «la più perfetta, rilucente d’ori e d’argenti». Ed ecco Noto, tre piazze, tre scenari in fila, città di palazzi e di conventi. «È lo sfondo ideale delle fiabe del Capuana, con grate a ricamo, balconi sorrette da sirene e mostri, ragazze che guardano nella strada dietro cortine di convolvoli, pari anch’esse a grate monastiche. Una fervida stravaganza, trasmessa alla pietra, sembra rinunciare a difendersi da un eccesso di favoloso, che è qui la forma presa della perdizione; si è in una terra di signori che si immersero nella loro favola ed accettarono in essa la propria rovina. In questa parte dell’isola era incantevole il contrappunto di queste città barocche, tra Siracusa da una parte, e Gela ed Agrigento dall’altra, in una terra dedicata alla grande arte greca; gli intermezzi barocchi portano una nota estrosa, un respiro, una breve fuga dal sublime nel capriccioso; il caso e i terremoti, provocando queste varianti, sono stati grandi registi».Con la sua prosa raffinata, sorretta talvolta da pregevoli artifici retorici, non ebbe dubbi che «il barocco siculo, ardente e chimerico, è diverso da tutti, che si sposa al palmizio, assimila la pietra al pennacchio e al ciuffo, pregno di elementi arabi e di elementi bizantini, tutto fantasia e sangue, senza un momento di freddezza». Era lo straordinario barocco siciliano fiorito dalle fantasia di sangue che porta sempre un riflesso d’oriente e trasforma le strade e le piazze in scenari, in un’altalena tra umori cupi, sofferenze umane e paesaggi sublimi e i molti descrittori, appassionati ed estimatori, non si stancano mai di scoprivi sempre particolari inediti che assieme alle “luci arabe di Palermo, l’oriente da gioielleria dei giardini di aranci, la terrasanta di Ragusa, la Grecia piegata al colore di Siracusa, Agrigento, Selinunte, Segesta, il balcone di Erice sulla storia - concludeva Piovene - lasciano vedere nella Sicilia una tra le più belle terre del mondo”.

He did not hide his predilection for the Baroque cities in his travels, and was among the first travelers to emphasize this style with a very precise idea: «In front of the fountains, or in front of a facade, everything appears to me in a more positive e vital light; in an age in which the natural and physical sciences took much breadth, the baroque was like a translation in the art of the impulse that led man to know nature, to experience it, to interpret it, to travel it, up to then being amazing of his own discoveries; we might say that, in the Baroque, the artist wants to transform himself into water, fire, lion, snake, gem, exotic land, to experience himself under a hundred disguises, being surprised and amazed with his transformations. This enthusiasm for the universe generates in some others scientific research; the baroque consumes it quickly in a fire of imagination; it is the great prologue to the scientific civilization and modern age».For the writer from Vicenza, in Sicily this style came from a population that expressed its nature in the Baroque, not in a phase of style, but in all its history. «Even the Greek temples - he wrote - are imbued with a natural Baroque style; in this mode that people reveal a rare exotic flavour, a reflection of the East; in short, it is a baroque, not cold, but vital, ardent, full of dreams». In Catania he used to rest along Via dei Crociferi which «for baroque lovers among whom I include myself, they keep this street as one of the most attractive in Italy»; and he lingered in the church of San Benedetto, «the most perfect, shining of gold and silver, also because, unlike others, it still belongs to the nuns, and is therefore kept with monastic diligence».And here is Noto, three squares, three scenarios in line. It was a city of palaces and convents, of lord monks, and worker nuns in pastry making. «It is the ideal background of the Capuana fables, with embroidered gratings, balconies supported by mermaids and monsters, girls looking into the street behind curtains of bindweeds, also like the monastic grates; A fervid extravagance, transmitted to the stone, seems to give up defending itself from an excess of fabulous, which here is the form taken of the perdition; we are in a land of lords who immersed themselves in their fable and accepted their ruin in it. In this side of the island the counterpoint of these baroque cities, between Syracuse on one side, and Gela and Agrigento on the other was enchanting, in a land dedicated to the great Greek art; the baroque breaks have a whimsical note, a breath. The case and the earthquakes, causing these variations, have been great directors». So the earthquake of the seventeenth century and the volcano, destroying everything along the time, «have, however, given birth to the most perfect Baroque cities in the world». With his refined prose, sometimes supported by fine rhetorical devices, between prose and poetry, narration and meditation, he had no doubt that «the Sicilian baroque, fervent and chimerical, is different from all, it assimilates the stone to the plume and tuft, full of Arabic and Byzantine elements, all fantasy and blood, without a moment of coldness».
