A ll types of fine artisan musical in-struments are present this year at
Mondomusica, the expo taking place atCremonaFiere from October 6ththrough 8th. More than 200 exhibitorswill attend, with 50% arriving fromabroad – with a traditionally strongpresence from Germany, France andthe United States, but also “new en-tries” for this stage such as Bulgaria,India and Israel. The exhibition spacehas increased by 60% from last year, adouble digit increase that will requirethe organizers to set up the expo inPavilion 2, the largest in the conven-tion center. With the increase in size,Mondomusica is expected to establish anew attendance record (7,470 visitedthe expo in 2005, with 25% arrivingfrom abroad). There are many profes-sional dealers participating this year forthe first time, proving that Mondomu-sica is the top international marketplacefor the artisan musical instrument field. The intense 3-day convention has a fullcalendar of events, divided between of-ficial events sponsored by the organiz-ers of the exposition (the TriennialBoard and CremonaFiere) and demon-strations organized by the exhibitorsthemselves. The calendar shows that theexpo does not solely gravitate aroundstringed instruments, even though Cre-mona is the birthplace of the violin. Theguitar, for example, is highlightedthrough various events, such as the ex-hibit “The 19th Century in the Shapeof the Guitar”, arranged thanks to theprivate collection of Maestro LorenzoFrignani, and the master class of fla-menco guitars presented by MaestroAntonio Zarco Abellán, a Spanish spe-cialist whose lessons will be accompa-nied by the dancer Eva Morales, a greatperformer of this fascinating musicalstyle. Everyone knows who Antonio Stradi-varius is, though few know of him as abuilder of precious guitars in additionto the priceless violins. His guitars willhold center stage during a seminar inwhich the noted British researcher andluthier Stephen Barber will participate. Also noteworthy is the discussion withMaestro Giovanni Puddu, artistic di-rector of the Musical Academy of Cre-mona, about the methodology of inter-preting the original literature of the1800s. The presence of historical key-boards is a recurring theme of the ex-po: this year the sector is represented byan interesting roundtable titled “Histor-ical Keyboards between Past and Pre-sent.” During this event, conservatory teachersand specialists will discuss, among oth-er things, the possibility of playing con-temporary music with the antique harp-sichord. And speaking of roundtables, another important one, due to the au-thority of the speakers, is that on thetopic of “The Global Market of Violin-making,” which will put economists andviolinmakers head to head. Also note-worthy is the roundtable developed tocommemorate the 50th anniversary ofthe death of Lorenzo Perosi (“Musicand Liturgy Today”). All the various initiatives around theharp, which will coincide with the eventssponsored by the Triennial Board atPalazzo Pallavicino, should not bemissed either, as well as the many mu-sical moments and opportunities foranalysis organized by the exhibitors.
