CASE STUDYITALY – L’Aquila – PALAZZO GAGLIARDI SARDI

#CHALLENGE

Base isolation of the masonry building, severely damaged by the 2009 earthquake, using the retrofit approach, in accordance with regulations and preserving its historical value.

#SOLUTIONTensa has used a combination of 53 high damping rubber isolators characterized by a limited horizontal stiffness to limit the input force, in parallel with 49 free sliding Pot Bearings to limit the torsional effects at the isolation interface and the global cost of the intervention.

#OUTCOME

Base isolation retrofit has allowed Tensa in avoiding an invasive structural intervention above the ground level characterized by valuable architectural elements concentrating the work in the creation of sub foundations.

This approach allowed to proceed with a simple conservative restoration guaranteeing the protection of an extremely important building both for national artistic heritage and for the city of L’Aquila.
