• Data • Information • Knowledge

…data is value

How many types of data?

12

Big Data Volume Variety Velocity13

Social media data14

Objects data: Internet of Things15

Personal Data: the quantified self16

17

Open data: free, open, accessible

Why data are so important?

18

Data As A Servicedigital data change the market

19

20

… Data are not closed inside applications but they are consumed on-demand as a service

RESTful API make possible to access data as a web resource (trough URI - uniform resource identifier)

The Market of Data

digital data shape cities21

Data helps to monitor the status and the development of a system/city

1) Economic Development - monitoring efficiency and effectiveness of the overall economic system; 2) Social Development – assessing social impact of policies and programs; 3) Environmental Development - evaluating environmental sustainability of policies in medium and long term.

Microfactories: the cleaner, smarter and more efficient factory of tomorrow

When I say that innovation is being democratized, I mean that users of

products and services—both firms and individual consumers—are

increasingly able to innovate for themselves.

(DEMOCRATIZING INNOVATION, Eric Von Hippel, MIT)

Democratising innovation: open innovation, user driven innovation, etc.

IS WHEN YOU HAVE TOO MUCH DATA TO HANDLE ON YOUR OWN COMPUTER OR WITH NORMAL PROGRAMMING SKILLS & METHODS…

BIG DATA?

... BUT AT THE SAME TIME YOU COMPLAIN THAT YOU HAVE NOT ENOUGH DATA TO DO WHAT YOU WANT

31

IT IS ALL ABOUT HIDDEN PATTERNS

big data: new conceptual framework

32

big data is about three major shifts of mindset

(1) WHOLE VS SAMPLES The first is the ability to analyze vast amounts of data about a topic rather than be forced to settle for smaller sets.

(2) COMPLEXITY VS EXACTITUDE The second is a willingness to embrace data’s real-world messiness rather than privilege exactitude.

(3) CORRELATION VS CAUSATION The third is a growing respect for correlations rather than a continuing quest for elusive causality.

The big data and analytics market will reach $125 billion worldwide in 2015, according to IDC.

New technologies will account for 100% of growth - Worldwide IT and telecommunications spending will grow 3.8% in 2015 to more than $3.8 trillion. Nearly all of this […] will be focused […] on mobile, cloud, big data analytics and the Internet of Things. - NEW ICT

Wireless data, the largest segment of the telecommunications sector, will also be the fastest growing - Wireless data will be the largest ($536 billion) and fastest growing (13%) segment of telecom spending. - MOBILE

Phablets will be the mobile growth engine - Sales of smartphones and tablets will slow down from the pace of recent years, reaching $484 billion and accounting for 40% of all IT spending growth. THE PC IS DEAD

In 2015, digital marketing budgets will increase by 8% […] with more than $500 million in annual revenue.

Facebook is now worth about $200 billion. United Airlines, a company that actually owns things like airplanes and has licenses to lucrative things like airport facilities and transoceanic routes between the U.S. and Asia, among other places, is worth $34 billion. new trends in data for health

36

37

Wearable devices

Flatiron Health - “Only 4% of patients participate in clinical trials. Our vision is to aggregate the data on the 96% percent, organize it, and make it usable by physicians, patients, and any of the stakeholders here” Nat Turner, co-funder Flatiron Health.

39

future challenges

40

41

1. monitoring activities and performance 2. optimisation of medical resources 3. new metrics and new finance 4. new services (easy access to healthcare system) 5. telemedicine 6. treatment delivery 7. health profiles: biology of diseases 8. predictive models: more informed modelling 9. wearable devices: monitoring conical diseases 10. massive engagement: mobile health apps
