The Universitys main campus is located in theold Ca Granda (literally the Big House),a striking monumental complex in the hearto the city, a short distance rom the Duomo.Created in the 15th century by the Tuscan

The Faculty of Arts and Humanities is dedicated to research and teaching in all
elds of the humanities, from ancient and classical civilisations and languages
to the intersection between humanities and neuroscience, covering the entire
chronological range from the earliest times to the present day.
Combining the stability of tradition with the vitality of new methods and
technology, the various programmes provided by the Faculty share the samepurpose: the articulation, development and constant implementation of the
theoretical, historical and methodological heritage of the human sciences.

The Faculty of Social and Political Sciences offers an innovative and stimulating
combination of study programmes, thanks to the presence of the largest and
most qualied concentration of social scientists in Italy 79 full professors,
52 associate professors and 86 assistant professors and the continuous
research activity of its 7 departments.
The academic programme provides groundings in the disciplines of economics,sociology, political science, history, law, psychology and linguistics, as well

FACULTY OF LAW
The Faculty of Law was established in 1924. Over the years, the Faculty
has maintained its initial prestige through the work of many great masters
of thought, who also helped to train a large part of the current teaching staff,
which is composed of 73 full professors, 24 associate professors
and approximately 100 assistant professors.
The Faculty offers a wide range of courses and deals with many areas ofresearch; particular attention is dedicated to international relations, with
teaching staff and the most outstanding students constantly collaborating
in projects with prestigious foreign universities, such as Berkeley, Stanford,

With more than 600 professors and researchers and approximately
1700 new students each year, the Faculty of Medicine is one of the most
important in Italy, in terms of both the standards of training and the
clinical and basic scientic results.
The academic programmes cover the entire spectrum of medical training,

FACULTY OF VETERINARY MEDICINE
Established in 1791 as the College of Veterinary Studies and part of the
University of Milan since 1932, the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine enrols
approximately 500 new students each year and conducts high-level study
and research activities, collaborating with international scientic partners.
In addition to basic veterinary disciplines, its research covers infections
and contagious diseases in domestic animals and the safety of animalproducts intended for human consumption.
The university centre in Lodi is home to the recently-opened Veterinary
Hospital and a diagnostic centre specialising in large animals (equine, bovine,
porcine, ovine/caprine), as well as birds, sh and smaller species. The shelters,
operating theatres and radiology and obstetrics departments of these
extremely modern facilities are equipped with the most modern technologies.

FACULTY OF PHARMACY
The Faculty of Pharmacy has grown rapidly during its forty-year existence,
becoming one of the most advanced Pharmacy Faculties in Italy,
due to both the quality of its teaching and re search and the number
of enrolled students (4500).
The study programmes offered are designed to meet different goals,
while encouraging synergy between the various educational elds - biology,chemistry and technology.
The Faculty of Pharmacy has an ongoing collaboration with the University
Nostra Signora del Buon Consiglio in Tirana, Albania.

The main object of the Faculty of Exercise and Sports Sciences
teaching and research is human health and psychophysical wellbeing.

Originally founded as a School of Agriculture in 1871, the Faculty is now
the largest in Italy in terms of the number of students approximately 3000
and teaching staff - around 180, working in 7 Research Departments.

DOCTORAL SCHOOLS
The University of Milan has 20 Doctoral schools in several different elds
of study, in which highly specialised training and research activities are closely
related. Students holding a masters degree are admitted on the basis of
competitive selection and most of them are supported by fellowships.
They are trained for advanced scientic research or for highly-qualied
professional roles. Programmes mainly consist of independent research projectscarried out under the supervision of a university professor.
The Doctoral Schools have a strong international orientation, with a high
percentage of foreign students and visiting professors and with most

o both a basic and applied nature.This research is undertaken across the entirerange o scientifc and disciplinary felds present
in the University. The Universitys researchersoccupy leading positions in numerous researchprogrammes conducted both at a national
and international level.
In recent years, the University has beenan extremely active participant in theEuropean Commissions Research Framework
Programmes, enjoying particular success in thefelds o lie sciences, ood quality and saety,nanotechnologies and environmental sciences.
This research work is conducted in 69 Departmentsand 29 Inter-departmental Research Centres,three o which were recognised as Centres o
Excellence in the sectors o nanotechnologies,biomolecular studies and the diagnosis andtherapy o neurodegenerative pathologies.
The results o our research are attested to bya signifcant quantity o scientifc publications
(more than 24,000 in the last three years),while 5 scientists rom the University have been
ranked as highly cited by the ISI - Instituteor Scientifc Inormation (USA).

SCIENTIFIC RELATIONSHIPS
Numerous researchers rom the University workin collaboration with various national research
institutions: in particular, the University is hometo branches o the Italian National Research
Council (CNR), the National Institute o NuclearPhysics (INFN) and the National Institute o thePhysics o Matter (INFM-CNR), within which
many research projects are currently beingconducted.Important lines o research are also being
developed in the areas o economics, history,law, and social and political studies, with aspecial ocus on the international context.
The University o Milan is the only Italian
University among the 22 members o LERU(League o European Research Universities).
Membership in LERU, which is by invitation,is periodically evaluated against a broad seto quantitative and qualitative criteria, such as
research volume, impact and unding, strengthsin PhD training, size and disciplinary breadth,
and peer-recognised academic excellence.
TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER
In recent years, the University has strengthened
its commitment to the technology transero scientifc research results into economic
and productive contexts. The University has alsoset up a specifc centre, UNIMITT, to act as anIndustrial Liaison Ofce, providing aster, more
efcient management o its many relations
with the economy and the world o work.In act, the University o Milan has a wealth
o skills and knowledge that make it animportant reerence point or business as well.An increasing number o companies are turning
to the University o Milan, commissioningresearch studies and requesting consultingservices in the most diverse areas o knowledge.
Companies also work together with theUniversity by oering internships in specifcproessional felds.
The University participates in a large numbero initiatives with other external institutes
and investors, supporting the creation o newcompanies and disseminating technologicalentrepreneurial culture.
The results can be clearly seen: since 2003,UNIMITT has set up 26 spin-o companiesthat operate within the University o Milans
top research macrosectors: Biotechnology andPharmaceutical Technology (52%), IndustrialTechnologies and Processes (26%), New Materials
(11%) and Devices and Appliances (11%), with
many other projects currently on the drawing board.A particularly important development was therecent establishment o the Filarete Foundationor bioscience and innovation.
The Filarete Foundation is a public-privatepartnership between the University o Milan,a major bank and a bank-unded charity.
Its objectives are to promote technology transerin the feld o biosciences, create and supportnew entrepreneurs, and develop collaboration
among university researchers, enterprises andfnancial institutions.The Foundation has developed an innovative
business incubator that integrates technologyplatorms, university spin-os and SMEs tolaunch the best projects on the marketplace.

The University o Milan has a network o 87
libraries with one o the largest book collectionsin the region and an important digital librarywith 9130 titles online and 171 databases.
All libraries share the same OPAC (Online PublicAccess Catalogue) constantly accessible on
and o campus which contains more thanone million bibliographic records coveringold and modern books, printed and electronic
periodicals and audiovisual material.The library system also incorporates the APICECentre that collects, preserves and utilises
valuable and rare books and archives andthe AIR (Institutional Research Archive), whichcontains complete records o the Universitys
research results.
E-LEARNING AND DISTANCE EDUCATION
The University o Milan oers its teaching sta
and students an online portal dedicated toe-learning and distance education.The Ariel portal, managed by the CTU
(Centre or Technologies and distance multimediaUniversity didactics), contains hundreds
o websites to support on-campus learning.The CTU, thanks to its modern in-houseaudiovisual production acilities, carries out
educational support activities in the sphereo radio and television or degree and mastercourses in the area o communication
and or the Universitys School o Journalism.It also handles every stage o the audio andvideo productions requested by the Universitys

ADMISSION AND FEES
As a general rule, applicants must have studiedor at least 12 years beore applying or auniversity course. Those rom countries where
admission to university is possible ater only10 or 11 years o study must prove that theyhave attended the local university and passed
all necessary examinations or a urther 1 - or2 - year period, so as to reach a total o 12 yearso study.
European citizens, non-EU citizens residentin Italy with a current, valid permesso di
soggiorno (residence permit) and natives oIceland, Norway, Switzerland and Lichtenstein
can apply to the university like Italian citizens,submitting their admission application directlyto the University.
Non-EU citizens resident abroad must submit apre-application request to the Italian Embassy or
Consulate in their country o residence.
Graduates who wish to apply or a doctoral
programme or a medical specialisation schoolmust ollow the instructions in the competitiveexamination announcements.
The University o Milan is a public institution:thereore, ees are curbed in order to guarantee,
to the greatest possible extent, the right tostudy. University enrolment ees vary according

Our University oers a guidance service run bythe COSP Centre to help uture students with
study choices and to provide graduates withcareer advice.
Future students can obtain inormation aboutcourses and study programmes through grouppresentations and individual interviews.
Enrolled students are provided with individualpsychological support services and assistancein adapting study methods.

CULTURAL ACTIVITIES, SPORTS AND LEISURE
The University o Milan promotes sportingand cultural activities or students and sta,
through its University Sport Centre and throughcollaborations and special arrangements with
the citys main gymnasiums, cinemas, dance/musicagents and theatres, in order to provide accessto cultural initiatives and services at reduced prices.
University o Milan students can also take partin music and theatre initiatives organised
by the Universitys resident cultural institutions,which include the Orchestra, the Choir andthe University Theatre Centre.
