PREMESSA GENERALE
vari percorsi quali i corridoi pulito-sporco,
GENERAL INTROduCTION
The evolution of building concepts for
SuRGERY ROOMS has led to concentrate the
subdivision of environments on a single area,
where services and functions like steriliza-
tion, preparation of the patient, staff clothing
and sterilization, postoperative awakening
and every route, such as the clean and dirty
pathways, are conceived and integrated into
a septic-aseptic system which will lead to
the achievement of the highest degree of
prevention of infection.

Una crescente esigenza di flessibilità
costruttiva, ha portato all’introduzione dei
BLOCCHI OPERATORI PREFABBRICATI nei
quali l’inserimento di nuove tecnologie,
impianti, apparecchiature elettromedicali
A growing need of constructive
flexibility has led to the introduction of
PREFABRICATEd SuRGERY uNITS in
which the introduction of new technologies,
fittings, electromedical equipment perfectly
complement with the structure, thus
favouring the control of bacterial
proliferation in surgery rooms. An extremely
flexible technological container allowing
for easy inspection, in order to enable
utmost adaptability to the existing
structures while at the same time to
service fittings and clean of all its parts.
The introduction of self-supporting framework
modular structure (prefabrication systems)
covered with panelling such as Methacrylate,
HPL, Painted Stainless Steel etc., turned out
to be the natural goal of SuRGERY ROOMS

PANNELLATuRE MOduLARI
Le pareti delle sale operatorie previste per
la realizzazione del blocco operatorio, sono
costituite da pannelli modulari intercambiabili
in Metacrilato spessore 12 mm.
Il pannello in Metacrilato è un materiale
compatto e non poroso, composto in
modo omogeneo da 1/3 di resina acrilica
(metacrilato di metile) e da 2/3 di sostanze
minerali naturali.
garantiscono l’igienicità in quanto prevengono
Contaminanti radioattivi a bassi
livelli o liquidi corporei possono essere rimossi
facilmente.
MOduLAR PANELS
The surgery room walls for the
realization of the surgery unit are made
of interchangeable modular panels in
Antibacterial Methacrylate, 12 mm thick.
The Methacrylate panel is a compact and
non porous material, evenly compo-
sed of acrylic resin (methyl methacrylate)
for 1/3 and natural mineral substances for the
remaining 2/3.
The panel is Class 1 as to reaction to fire.
The material is highly resistant and even,
easy to clean, highly aseptic. Cuts, scratches
and cigarette burnings can be easily removed
by a simple smoothing.
The non porous surfaces without junctions
ensure the Methacrylate hygiene, preventing
dirt collection and bacteria and mould growth.
Low level radioactive contamination or body
fluids can be easily removed.
This material is also used in areas where HIV
infected blood is handled.
Mod. OMAS-TECHWALLMod. OMAS-TECHWALL
12
Sale operatorie prefabbricatePrefabricated surgery rooms report
The Methacrylate finds its ideal application
in the so-called “clean areas” which require
utmost antibacterial protection (surgery
rooms, clean rooms etc).
It is a composite material, formed by acrylic
resin and inert mineral filler; solid and compact,
it does not undergo delamination, is not
porous and is highly resistant to temperatures.
It has a long life and the manufacturer grants
a 10-year and even longer guarantee on
manufacturing defects.
Small scratches, cuts and stains can be
removed by a simple smoothing.
The scratches (even deep) can be easily
and soon repaired in-place thanks to the
application of a suitable adhesive, without
removing or replacing the damaged panel.
Such adhesive material is liquid Methacrylate
used to fill the hollow; it has to solidify
for 20/30 minutes and then has to be
smoothed: the surface comes back to its
original condition, perfectly matching the
other parts, even from a chromatic point
of view.
The presence of scratches does not
affect the hygiene of the panel and does
not affect its use in surgery rooms before
the repair.
Il Metacrilato trova collocazione ideale nelle
cosiddette “aree pulite” che richiedono
una protezione antibatterica superiore
(sale operatorie, camere bianche ecc.).
Materiale composito, costituito da resina
acrilica e carica minerale inerte; solido e
viene messo a riempimento dell’ammaccatura,

progettuali. I pannelli sono interamente
costruiti nella finitura prevista e sono
dotati di pellicola protettiva in polietilene da
eliminare a montaggio ultimato.
siliconico o guarnizioni morbide) oppure
tramite omeghetto in estruso di alluminio.
Panelling is full-height, without any horizontal
junction, with a horizontal module changing
according to the project specifications.
Panels are entirely finished according to the
project specifications and are provided with a
protective film in polyethylene to be eliminated
after the mounting. A soft gasket is placed
between the self-supporting framework and
the modular panels to avoid the direct contact
between the framework and the panels. This
element allows for perfect tightness of walls.
The mounting of the prefabricated panels is
particularly quick and rational: panels are
hooked up to the self-supporting framework
by means of rear gravity hooks (in case of
junction between panels with silicone sealer
or soft gaskets) or by means of Omega
profiles made in extruded aluminium and
painted like the walls.

senza rimuovere quelli adiacenti.
Tra pannello e pannello, giunti verticali,
possono essere previste le seguenti soluzioni:
Omega in estruso di alluminio verniciato;
Guarnizione Siliconica certificata per
ambienti sterili;
Guarnizione morbida in estruso di PVC;
Per i pannelli con rinforzo posteriore, il
momento quadratico di inerzia della parete è
incrementato da traversi in profilati di alluminio
opportunamente ubicati, che garantiscono
una flessione massima di circa 1/1000 di
lunghezza della parete con carichi di circa
1000 N uniformemente ripartiti.
Sguscia, ad ampio raggio, di raccordo in
alluminio estruso tra parete e pavimento e tra
parete e controsoffitto.
The dismounting of the surgery room is as
quick and cheap, it can be done even for

technical reasons, without removing any
adjacent panel. For vertical junction of panels
the following solutions are available:
Omega profile in painted extruded
aluminium.
Silicone gasket certified for sterile
environments;
Soft gasket made in extruded PVC;
As far as the back reinforcement panels are
concerned the quadratic moment of inertia
of the wall is enhanced with aluminium cross
profiles conveniently located, which guarantee
a maximum bending stress of approximately
1/1000 of wall length, with evenly distributed
charges of 1000 N.
Large radius cove in extruded aluminium
between the wall and the floor and the
wall and the false ceiling. The technical
compartment is at least 75mm – maximum to
be defined with the D.L. (works management)
in accordance with the fittings that have to be
flush-integrated or with the equipment to be
fitted on the rear of the wall.

TECHNICAL PERFORMANCE CHARACTERISTICS
Structural aspects and stresses.
The system conceived for the complete
internal covering of surgical departments,
is based on a flexible structural design
suitable for the fitting inside existing
structures.
Generally it aims the following targets:
a) use of hooks to the horizontal structures
available; coupling to the vertical structures
is essential;
b) distribution of the permanent weights, very
modest, in order not to alter the efficiency of
the existing horizontal structures;
c) realization of components for the
covering suitable to be used as wall
and compatible in lightness and size with
the mounting needs inside existing
structures.
From the structural point of view the basic
components are represented by uprights
positioned at 1,20 m intervals either along
the perimeter against the walls or to delimit
structures, and by panelling with external
covering in painted stainless steel,
methacrylate or HPL laminate.
CARATTERISTICHE TECNICHE PRESTAZIONALI
Aspetti strutturali e sollecitazioni.
vani esistenti.
In linea generale si basa sui seguenti obiettivi:
a) utilizzare agganci alle strutture orizzontali,
in ogni caso disponibili; gli innesti alle
strutture verticali sono indispensabili;
delle strutture orizzontali presenti;
c) realizzare componenti per la formazione del
rivestimento che siano idonei per la funzione
di parete e compatibili per leggerezza e
dimensione con le esigenze di montaggio
entro vani esistenti.
Inox Verniciato, metacrilato e HPL.

limiti a 1/800 dell’altezza, avendo considerato
le altezze di mt. 4. Per eventuali maggiori
altezze, oppure senza supporti intermedi,
distribuiti sull’intera superficie pari a circa 1000
a 1300 N/mq.
The panelling is suitable for a concentrated
static pressure of 1000 N or for a distributed
static pressure of 800 N/sq m. deformations
are contained within 1/1000 from the
supports distance.
The uprights in aluminium tubular profiles - 50
x 50 x 2 mm- are equipped with slotted sup-
ports on top; they are suitable for the same
distributed pressure stress indicated for the
panelling, as well as for concentrated loads of
1500 N, with deformations limited to 1/800
of the height, having considered 4-m heights.
For greater heights, or in the absence of
intermediate supports, the upright profiles
will have to be adapted. The total system has
an average wall weight of approximately 500
N/sq m; this value corresponds to 1700N/m.
on the structures perimeter. In case of surgery
room coverings there is incidence of permanent
charges distributed on the whole surface
equivalent to approximately 1000 N/sq m;
in case of application of the technology to
the adjacent structures too, this value would
increase to 1300 N/sq m because of bigger
wall densities. Those values are lower than
permanent charges which generally are planned
for heavy masonry partitions and hence
compatible with the possible existing structures.

REMARkS ON THE WALL ACOuSTIC FEATuRES
The acoustic comfort conditions inside surgery
rooms are mainly determined by two acoustic
requirements: a low level of background
noise and a good understandability of
spoken output.
The background noise can be caused by
noise sources both outside and inside the
surgery room; some typical noise sources
can be represented by the components of
heating systems, conditioning and ventilation
systems as well as other mechanical systems
necessary for the surgery operations.
The understandability of spoken output
means the possibility to have a good
comprehension of the verbal communication
between surgeons and assistants, even at
quite long distances. Walls described in this
report can influence both these requirements
through their acoustic isolation and sound
absorption performances.
The acoustic isolation represents the ability
of a wall to reduce the noise which is
transmitted between two adjacent
rooms; this requirement is described by the
sound resistance R (in dB).
CONSIdERAZIONI SuLLE CARATTERISTICHE
ACuSTICHE dELLE PARETI
rumore esterne e/o interne alla sala operatoria;
tipiche sorgenti di rumore possono essere i
componenti degli impianti di riscaldamento,
condizionamento e ventilazione o altri
sistemi meccanici indispensabili per gli
interventi chirurgici.
L’intelligibilità del parlato individua la
possibilità di avere una buona comprensione
della comunicazione verbale tra chirurghi
ed assistenti anche a distanze relativamente
elevate.
Le pareti descritte in questa relazione possono
influenzare entrambi questi requisiti attraverso
le loro prestazioni di isolamento acustico ed
assorbimento acustico. L’isolamento acustico

acustica riflessa all’interno dello stesso
ambiente in cui si trova la sorgente di rumore;
High levels of R ensure low levels of
background noise produced by sources
outside the surgery room.
The sound absorption of the surface exposed
to the sound field represents the ability of the
wall to reduce the acoustic energy which is
reflected inside the room where the noise
source is located; the requirement is
described by the “apparent sound absorption
coefficient”, that is the ratio between the
absorbed sound and the incident sound on
the wall. This requirement can reduce
the noise produced by sources inside the
surgery room and can improve the
understandability of spoken output by
minimizing the reverberation time.

SOuNd ABSORPTION
The sound absorption features of these new
walls have been conceived in order to ensure a
satisfactory reverberation time value (RT) for
a good understandibility of spoken output.
It is perhaps useful to remember that RT
values are determined both by the sound
absorption of the surfaces bordering the
room and by the equivalent sound-absorbing
surface of objects and people inside that area.
If new panels are added to a pre-existing
wall, in masonry or reinforced concrete,
it will be easy to notice that this system
will acts as a resonant panel, so the “d”
curve will probably show a peak on the
resonance frequency resulting from the
following relation:
fo = 60/ ( d) ½ (Hz)
where “d” (m) is the distance of the wall
from the pre-existing one and is the surface
density of the panel.
If d=140 and = 16 kg/sq m the relation (1)
will give a value fo=40 Hz.

ASSORBIMENTO ACuSTICO
Le proprietà di assorbimento acustico di
queste nuove pareti sono state progettate
in laterizio o cemento armato, è facile osservare
fo = 60/ ( d) ½ (Hz)
ISOLAMENTO ACuSTICO
Innanzitutto sembra importante osservare
In the aim of enlarging the frequency range,
through which the maximum absorption is
achieved, the panel supporting the steel plate
has been made with a porous material featu-
ring good sound-absorption.
It has been suggested the use of a
sound-absorbing panel on the ceiling of
the room in order to ensure the sound
absorption even at high frequencies.
The absorption data shown in the table
allow the achievement of reverberation time
best values.
The calculation has been made considering
the presence of 5 people in the surgery room.
SOuNd INSuLATION
First of all it must be noticed that in
case the new wall is mounted on
a pre-existing one, a masonry one for
instance, the sound insulation of the
whole wall will increase.
An estimation of the R sound resistance
increase can be obtained using the method
described in (1).

L’idea è che il valore di R inizia ad
aumentare oltre la frequenza di risonanza “fo”
(1) che dipende dalla densità superficiale
e dallo spessore dell’intercapedine “d”.
critica Fc dove comincia a calare.
scegliendo:
1) una intercapedine “d” elevata;
2) materiali con elevati valori e densità
superficiale.
parete.
The idea is that the R value starts increasing
beyond the resonance frequency “fo” (1)
which depends on the surface density and
on the thickness of the air space “d”.
Starting from “fo” the R value increases
by a 12 dB/octave slope up to a maximum
value called PH; at this moment it keeps
constant until the critical frequency (fc) where
it starts decreasing.
The wall has been designed, while at the
same complying with other technical and
structural requirements, in order to obtain
the highest R levels: that is to say, low “fo”
values, high “fc” and PH values.
A low “fo” value has been obtained selecting:
1) A high air space “d”;
2) materials featuring high values and surface
density.
The PH value depends on the system used to
attach the new wall to the pre-existing one,
by “points” or “lines“. Since the first method
ensures the highest PH levels, this system
has been adopted.
As to the critical frequency value “fc” it still
depends on the material density and on the
flexural rigidity of the wall.
