There was period in 2002 when I had no studio. We’d just moved from Ireland to Guéthary in SouthWest France, near Biarritz, to an apartment in arundown, onetime Art Deco hotel, right on the oce-an. I started looking around for a good place towork and there wasn’t much around, so I begandrawing on the kitchen table and drawing on mycomputer. At such times there’s a kind of liberty, you feel you can break the rules. For more thantwenty years I had thought about using flower mo-tifs... in common with rectangles they have lostmuch, if not all their representative function, in sofar as they are everywhere, ubiquitous on fabricsand wallpaper. Paradoxically another thing that I like about them isthat, whilst their “representative function” has fa-ded, they often have a kind of off the peg associa-tion. Damask napery, for example, is covered withroses that are no longer pictures of real roses butimply, perhaps, cream teas or grand dinners. Mo-reover, amusingly, there is now a real rose called a“damask rose” in a kind of reverse implication of atable cloth. Lilies imply death, yellow roses welco-me home but I’m not interested in a “language of

flowers” at all, but rather the accretions of mea-nings that have grown up over time in the com-monplace imagery around us.The hibiscus I use in this series is just that. It im-plies liberty and freedom... I played with these ide-as whilst I worked on the kitchen table, with noreal expectation of anything coming of them, itwas just play. The original drawing that becameWhere’s Dora was the product of sequence ofscans of my wife’s clothes; overlaying the imageswould allow me to have the visual tuning in and tu-ning out that I had in my earlier Ocean series. Thepainting could be a play of light and contrastingcolours, as such abstract and concrete, but theautobiographical references, cached in the earlierwork, would be overt. As, I think I mentioned once, in an earlier note onthe Ocean series, for me, all art is in some senseautobiographical. Guéthary had been for me a spe-cial place since 1974 when, aged sixteen, I disco-vered it, surfing for Wales. Where, at that time, inour hibiscus covered shorts we looked like wecould be some tribe that came from a place slightlynearer the sun than our own.

Nomina: “no seashells or un-dersea caves, no blinding sand or wild winds or su-perstitions … no trace or taste of lobster or turtle, mangoe or mongoose, no rum or coca-cola, nobamboo or barracuda … no fish or fowl … sea orsky-scape, no abstractings from nature …”. Nega-

Diventano ap-

Perhaps they were in his work already, in the ab-stract forms that he had painted for years, with aminimalism enamored of the historic lesson ofAmerica. Maybe they were camouflaged, tran-sformed, in the profusion of colors that domina-ted the geometric precision of the patterns, mar-ked out like mathematical modules. No doubt hehad them in his eyes and in his heart. Now NickGammon dreams only of more and moreflowersand leaves, all plants of paradise, symbols of anEden in an exotic, tropical land. The shapes of hibiscus and monstera deliciosahave become modules, forms that detach fromreality and turn abstract, with which he createspatterns as precisely considered as a theorem ineverything from their compositional structure totheir chromatic values. There is an essay by theAmerican artist Ad Reinhardt, written for a 1949exhibition, which had been painted in the VirginIslands, where he lists, by negation, a series ofsubjects denials that in some way “live” in his al-most monochrome paintings, based on the dar-kest hues of the Pantone colors. He names: “noseashells or undersea caves, no blinding sand orwild winds or superstitions ... no trace or taste oflobster or turtle, mango or mongoose, no rum or

coca-cola, no bamboo or barracuda ... no fish orfowl ... sea or sky-scape, no abstractings fromnature ...”. His negations are in a way affirma-tions, suggesting that the dark monochrome ab-stract paintings in reality contain references to allthese things. It ties in with the idea of a “paradi-se on the other side of the world”, a conceptthat runs through Western culture, from classicalliterature, to the discovery of the “New World”,and even the hippy’s pilgrimage to India.Nick Gammon is a Welsh artist, who lived in Ire-land and London, and travelled extensively in theUnited States and Central America before mo-ving to Biarritz. The story behind his latest bodyof work begins way back in 1974, when he wastwelve years old and started surfing in Wales. It’sa sport, a passion, with a whole philosophy andmythology of it’s own, inspired by the search forfreedom Surfing means challenging the waves, the sea as nature’s defining element, the epito-me of water and sky, the infinite, life and death.Human beings seek to tame the ocean with aboard, putting to use their courage, intelligenceand intuition in a game in which one stands alo-ne with the infinite. Surfing is also a word thatexcites the imagination with warm seas, sun-ba-

the surface move, creates dynamic planes, ma-kes the fields of color vibrate and depart fromthe two-dimensional. This is a totally virtual con-cept of three-dimensionality that approaches ahallucinogenic vision. An essential element, bothin terms of material and aesthetics, is wax, thefinal contribution to his works, informing refrainsand pacing, turning the painting into a velvet fa-bric. “Even in profile, the surface seems to move,in the slightlayering of the forms, flapping like aflag”, Gammon says.

So who was Dora anyway? Dora was a legend. He was someone who usedto disappear from time to time, no-one knewwhere to. A bit of a pirate, slightly crazy, alwayswith his board under his arm. It was in the sixtiesin California that the graffiti started appearing onwalls, at Dana Point where he surfed, asking“Where’s Dora?” No-one was ever quite sure. And it’s still being painted on walls today, hisname represents a whole way of life, it’s a sym-bol of youth and rebellion.

ked sand and skin, an easygoing lifestyle, freefrom the rules of everyday life, where you can gobarefoot in boardshorts – a world often seen asa stereotype. Against a backdrop of tropical flo-wers, palm trees and sunsets. Hawaii is idealized as the archetypical tropicalparadise for Americans, along with other exoticlocales, and, of course, California. Here origina-tes the coding of floral patterns inspired by tro-pical plants that once embellished shirts and sa-rongs and now are the patterns for all vacationand leisure clothing. This iconographic worldmingles with Beach Boys music, a collection ofmovies including the famous John Milius filmfrom 1978, Big Wednesday, and a line of heroes, surfers with “stage names”, characters definingthe type of life they incarnated. One such figurewas Dora, to whom Gammon dedicated the firstwork in the Green Room series, in 2003, a largediptych dominated by blue: Where’s Dora?As if he’s surfing on waves, Gammon glides overaworld of sensations and reflections, delving intoacollection of codified images, hibiscus and lushleaves. In each work, he breaks up those forms,he jumps on them and through them, doublesthem, observes them from different perspectives

and overlaps them. They become abstract mo-dules, outlines that arestylized to the point ofverging on the geometric. Nothing is left tochance, as minimalism’s lesson lingers in the hi-ghly precise layout of the compositional structu-re, in the exactness of the mark, in the meticu-lous plan that underpins every work. The trajec-tory for the artist starts from reality and then de-parts from it at the iconographic level. Realismbecomes abstract, modular mannerism, a viewthat detaches from the familiar, recognizable lan-dscape to delve into anarrative of sensationsand perceptions. Here, in this parallel dimension,Gammon surfs, as if he were gliding through la-yers of water, taking on the distorted view thatthe eyes see under the water’s surface, whenlooking up at the light from below, and all seemsto be governed by new laws of sight and gravity.Gammon is interested in having his paintingswork with perception. The concepts of opticaland kinetic art thereforecome into play, tied toshifting the bounds of forms, the application ofcolor, and optical effects. Shadings, juxtaposi-tions, sudden shifts in hue, combinations and to-nings. Oil paint and wax expressed through atheoretical and technical experience that makes
