Vacuum pumping in DecemberCooling at XMas
Full Test in February-March (it was end January)
1 Milan phys/tech always there
Recall:
The cold mass production in industry stopped. The contract with the was company cancelled and the work moved to CERN one year ago.ECT-A confirmed to be the first one to go to the pit
• All 16 coils and keystone boxes ready for assembly
• Assembly of ECT-A has started in July, cold mass is ready now.• Assembly in cryostat. End January 06.
• Vacuum tested in H191 in Feb. 06.
• Cooled down at 80k in B180•• Moved to the pit and Cooled down at 4K in May 06 (was March 06
ECT-C will followMajor problems solved

Original half-shell need
Production delayed by delamination of barrel support staves. Solved.
44 staves/112 were completed
But now serious problem with corrosion of the cooling lines( see Chiara)
Critical ID piping : 6 weeks delayBut not only detectors! Also ID services are a challenge! Layout of the cooling lines were underestimated. Big effort from TC.
Plan to finish for the 23th of October (critical last 2 sectors 1 and 9)

PhysicsMain event was the Rome Atlas Physics workshopOccasion for the whole collaboration to review the status of the physics and detector performance studies:
The preparation effort was large:Full simulation and reconstruction of 8M events in two months using the Grid tools, events made available to the community in the form of AOD’s
The response of the community was exceptional :450 participants; 100 talks.
Next steps
Finalize analyses in for the Autumn physics week
Prepare for DC3 as the commissioning of the Atlas SW & Event Data Model
L.Mandelli CSN1 Settembre 2005 36
Main conclusions (GP)
User-driven production on the grid did deliver data, but required toomuch human intervention, need evolution in that sector
The transition G3/G4 is now accomplished, should continue validation, using CTB data
ATLAS framework usable for analyses, now need to address performance issues and evolving analysis tools according to feedbackreceived
Next steps
Finalize Analyses of the Rome sample (Autumn Atlas Physics week )Prepare for DC3 as a real commissioning test of SW&CItalian partecipation very good. Now we need to move the
community from MC data analyses to real analyses. Ideas of tutorials from computing and analyses tools to “workshops” were to merge internal existing experience on selected items to favorite the concentration of forces on relevants topics
L.Mandelli CSN1 Settembre 2005 37
Require Mwwithin 10 GeV of nominal W mass S/B = 1.77
Top mass (GeV)
m(t)
Ex: Top study with 1 week data!Selection cuts: ETmiss > 20 GeV, 1 lep Pt > 20 GeV, 4 jets Pt > 20 GeV
No trigger selection efficiency taken into account yet
Preliminary
Measured top mass 160.0 ± 1.0 GeV , stat error on xs: 8.3%

“Standard conditions”
Critical muon station readinessToday key issues:
• BOL chambers construction in Lecce/Rome
• BML initial production noise quality (RPC), how much rework?
• BOS new delamination of Al panels (repair solution found)
• Keep level of manpower at BB5 as today for the next 3-4 months
The new organization is in place and it seems this time to be ok!

Masters modules installed in all 8 EMB crates.
• All EMB crates were tested individually:
• Some RODs and TMs with errors:they have been replaced.
• All EMB modules should work!
• This represents achievement of a MAJOR milestone!!!

Next 2 months : HS archesThe top part of the arches will be pre-assembled into 3 large sections, and equipped with platforms and cable trays, already on surface.
Already installed.

Next 2 months : critical path22 Sept : BT jacks released
26 Oct : Calo barrel in
BT platforms removal
BMS Ce/C
HS arches Ce/C
Many activities running in parallel and superimposed
Critical delivery of material : rails, brackets, cable trays, gas manifolds, ..
Critical the readiness of the barrel calo : ID piping
BT current l. + cryoring (sec 5)
After calo barrel in (26 October to 22 Dec)
• Endcap C calorimeters assembly up to end Jan ‘06 on side C
• Connect BT services (vacuum, power, cryo, bus bars,…)
• Finish installation of mu-rails, mu-services, mu-installation tools
• Connect LAr/Solenoid Cryo services
• Install barrel muon chambers (6/day), from mid Nov on both sides
• Install calo services
• Install ID services (pipes and cables)
• Install cooling and gas racks + connections to in/out
• Commission detectors during installation (I.e. Calo in situ electronics,..)
• Maintain infrastructure operational

L.Mandelli CSN1 Settembre 2005 58
Schedule barrel• Driven by ID cabling dressing on calo flange (we assume
50cables/day)
• Hudge ID work with major unknowns (method, cables availability, sequence tuning,…)
• Plan to finish most chambers installation by Apr ‘06
• Plan to finish Calo C assembly by end Jan ‘06
• Calo C in by mid Feb ‘06
• Calo A start assembly Feb ‘06 to May ‘06
• Feb to Apr : magnets tests, solenoid field mapping
L.Mandelli CSN1 Settembre 2005 59
Forward region + ID• As soon as Calo C is in, install TAS shielding
• From end Feb ‘06 start Wheels C installation
• ECT C ready for installation from Sep ‘06
• As soon as Calo A is in, install TAS shielding
• ECT A ready for installation from mid Jun ‘06
• From Sep ‘06 we might start Wheels A installation
• Barrel ID installation end May ‘06 from side A
• ID A&C late summer ‘06
L.Mandelli CSN1 Settembre 2005 60
Forward region + ID• Interplay between ECTs and wheels to be optimised
• ECT C installation schedule & wheels A will strongly depend on experience on previous ECT A / Wheels C assembly
• We need to minimize LAr cold movements to avoid risks
• We need to minimize ECT risks, magnet test as soon as possible!
• We need to delay as much as possible the pixel installation (recent corrosion problems)
First discussions next week TMB/EB
Next 6 months planning to be fixed in Oct ATLAS week
