PED2003-005 Rev. 01
Foglio 1 / 5
Data d’emissione: 30.8.2005

a pressione!

Operating instruction for pressure vessels (here after referred to as cylinder) for stationary pressure equipment
This operating instructions contains useful safety information concerning mounting, fitting, usage and maintenance of cylinders for stationary pressure equipment. Failure to comply with operating instructions can endanger the safety of persons and goods! 1. General
The cylinder is in accordance with the requirements of the directive 97/23/EC. The cylinder is approved for the PS x V product to modul-category IV according to diagram 1 and diagram 2 of this directive. All pressure accessories (valves, piping components, safety devices etc.) required for the ultimate use shall comply with the directive 97/23/EC.
2. Safety instructions
The following safety instructions refers to hazards that could occur during the cylinders life time. The hazards could influence the safety of the cylinder during transport, storage, mounting, maintenance, usage, testing or dismantling and scrapping. 2.1. Intended use The cylinder shall only be used for mounting in stationary pressure applications. The cylinder is not suitable for the transport of gases. The authorised usage is stamped on the cylinder. Misuse can contribute to the loss of its required properties and can cause explosion of the cylinder ! 2.2. Allowable Fluids The cylinder may only be filled with fluids mentioned in the Annex of this Operating instruction. The fluids of group 2 are not explosive, not flammable (where the max. allowable temperature is not above the flashpoint), not toxic and not oxidizing. Fluids of group 1 are dangerous fluids. The fluid group is stamped on the cylinder. The filling with inadmissible fluids can cause the cylinder to explode ! 2.3. Maximum allowable pressure It is advised that the max. allowable pressure PS (see Annex of this Operating instruction) is not exceeded. The PS value is stamped on the cylinder. Exceeding the max. allowed pressure PS can cause explosion of the cylinder ! 2.4. Maximum allowable pressure cycles For cycling operation the max. allowable cycling range and the maximum allowable number of cycles (see Annex of this Operating instruction) shall not be exceeded. Exceeding the maximum allowed cycling range or number of cycles can cause explosion of the cylinder ! 2.5. Damage The cylinder must not be exposed to excessive mechanical stress ! The packing of cylinders (e.g. pallets, cartons or boxes) during the warehousing and transport must be strong enough to withstand the conditions of transport and storage. When choosing a suitable packing it is strongly advised to consider the weight of the individual cylinder. During mounting of the cylinder, only such fixations and holding devices may be used which do not put excessive forces to the cylinder. Under no circumstances should the cylinder be welded or drilled on to secure mounting. Improper treatment (e.g. welding, drilling, grinding or riveting) changes the mechanical properties of the cylinder (wall thickness, UTS, yield). The use of mounting elements which put pressure upon the cylinder - or mechanically damage it - can result in the explosion of the cylinder ! Heavy damage can cause explosion of the cylinder ! 2.6. Allowable temperature range The cylinder must not be exposed to direct flame or heat nor very high or extreme low temperatures. The limits of the allowed temperature range TS (see Annex of this Operating instruction) are stamped on the cylinder. For storage of the cylinders the same allowed temperature range applies. If necessary safety precautions to guard from heat exposure must be provided. Temperatures outside the allowed limits can cause a negative change of the mechanical properties of the cylinder. Temperatures beyond the allowable limits can cause explosion of the cylinder ! 2.7. Electrical and magnetic influence The cylinder must not be exposed to electrical or magnetic fields which could cause heating of the cylinder above the maximum allowed temperature limit. The cylinder must be safeguarded against lightening. If need be, suitable safety devices must be installed. Overheating through electrical or magnetic fields or through lightening might lead to explosion of the cylinder !

2.8. Influence of humidity The internal surface of the cylinder must be protected against humidity. During transport and storage the opening of the cylinder must be tightly closed to ensure that no ingress of moisture is possible. Temperature changes during storage can increase the danger of corrosion due to condensation. Before mounting, a thorough visual inspection has to be carried out in order to determine that no corrosion or humidity is present. During service, the cylinder is to be filled with allowable fluids only (see Annex of this Operating instruction). In a pressure-less state the valve shall be closed too. The outer surface of the cylinder is protected by painting to safeguard it from moisture and corrosion. Humidity activates corrosion and reduces the wall thickness which can cause leaking of the cylinder, escape of fluid and explosion of the cylinder ! 2.9. Mounting of fittings or valves On the connection opening of the cylinder only suitable attachments shall be mounted that do not damage the connection. On the attached detailed drawing the measurements and the thread of the opening are shown. The type of the thread connection is stamped on the cylinder. When mounting the valve adjust the mounting torque carefully so that the thread connection is not damaged (Suitable torque-values see EN ISO 13341 and Annex of this Operating instruction). The connection of the attachment (e.g. valve) must never be dismounted under pressure. Prior to dismounting (e.g. of valve) must be checked that there is no pressure and that the cylinder is totally emptied. When dismounting the connection (e.g. valve) under pressure explosive escape of fluid and dangerous hurling of parts can occur ! A damaged thread connection or dismounting under pressure can cause explosive escape of fluid ! 2.10. Allowable additional stamp markings No stamp markings are permitted on the cylindrical part of the cylinder. Additional stamp markings are only permitted on the reinforced shoulder area of the cylinder (e.g. during retesting). Stamp markings on the cylindrical part may impact the mechanical properties and contribute to cracking and consequently lead to the explosion of the cylinder ! 2.11. Transport The cylinder shall only be transported in pressure less state. The corresponding rules for the transport of dangerous goods shall be adhered to when transporting the cylinder. The cylinder is not suitable for the transport of gases ! 2.12. Periodic inspection The cylinder must be submitted to retests in accordance with the national requirements of that country where the cylinder is in service. Disregarding the prescribed retests can allow damage that if undetected can result in the explosion of the cylinder ! 2.13. Scrapping The cylinder must never be scrapped under pressure. Before the cylinder is scrapped it must be confirmed that the cylinder is emptied completely. Scrapping under pressure can cause the cylinder to explode !
