PREFACE

The present volume contains the Proceedings of the Conference on "Par­tial Differential Equations and Geometry" that was held at the Castello del Valentino in Torino from October 12 to October 15, 1988.

The intent of the meeting was to stress the interest and the importance of the numerous research problems that connect differential geometry with the theory of partial differential equations andò to produce a fruitful exchange of methods and results among mathematicians working in these two fìelds.

A large number of analysts and geometers attended the Conference and the subjects covered by the various speakers ranged from topology to certain applications to physics. The organizers have been aware from the beginning of the fact that not ali the possible points of interaction between PDE's and geometry could be considered, but they hope that lectures and the informai contacts among the participants provided new perspectives and stimulations for mathematical research.

The Conference was mode possible by contributions from the Italian National Council of Research, the University and the Politecnico di Torino, the Cassa di Risparmio di Torino. The accomodation at the Castello del Valentino was provided by the Politecnico.

We thank Debra Levine for having been so helpful in assisting the par­ticipants and the organizers during the Conference.
