Knock on the hood. Kick the tires. Slam the door.Outdoor cats seek shelter in the winter, and your parked car might seem like a good place to hide. Give outdoor cats a warning before heading out on the road, just in case. It could save a life.

Do you know the requirements for outdoor dogs?

The State of Michigan defines minimum requirements for the shelter of outdoor dogs in MCL 750.50, which is the law that Animal Enforcement Officers refer back to when concerns are reported for dogs left outside.

MCL 750.50 states:

"Shelter" means adequate protection from the elements and weather conditions suitable for the age, species, and physical condition of the animal so as to maintain the animal in a state of good health. Shelter, for livestock, includes structures or natural features such as trees or topography. Shelter, for a dog, includes 1 or more of the following:

(i) The residence of the dog's owner or other individual.

(ii) A doghouse that is an enclosed structure with a roof and of appropriate dimensions for the breed and size of the dog. The doghouse shall have dry bedding when the outdoor temperature is or is predicted to drop below freezing.

(iii) A structure, including a garage, barn, or shed, that is sufficiently insulated and ventilated to protect the dog from exposure to extreme temperatures or, if not sufficiently insulated and ventilated, contains a doghouse as provided under subparagraph (ii) that is accessible to the dog.

Dogs must also be properly tethered.

"Tethering" means the restraint and confinement of a dog by use of a chain, rope, or similar device.

It is unlawful to tether a dog unless the tether is at least 3 times the length of the dog as measured from the tip of its nose to the base of its tail and is attached to a harness or non-choke collar designed for tethering.

If you haven’t check the expiration date for your dog’s Rabies vaccine, now is the time! You need 30 days remaining on your current vaccine to purchase your dog license, which is due March 1st. If the expiration date is close or has already expired, call your vet to have it updated. This is a very busy time of year for veterinarians, so don’t wait!

5 Winter Pet Hazards

HypothermiaHypothermia occurs when the body temperature falls below normal. The symptoms vary depending on severity, but include depression, lethargy, weakness, shivering, low heart rate, difficulty breathing, fixed and dilated pupils and coma.

AntifreezeAntifreeze poisoning is one of the most frequent causes of poisoning in small mammals because it is such a common household chemical. Pets are attracted by the sweet smell. Just two tablespoons of antifreeze would be enough to kill a cat or small dog.

CarsCars offer a warm place for small mammals to escape from the winter weather, particularly cats. It’s also dangerous to start your car and leave it running in your garage if a dog or cat is present. Before you warm up your car or drive off, check for animals.

Rock Salt/De-IcerRock salt is toxic to pets and humans when ingested, but it poses even greater risks to outdoor cats and dogs as their paws are often in direct contact with the substance. When ingested, rock salt can cause a wide range of symptoms including death.

RodenticideThe cold winter weather drives small rodents inside warmer garages, barns, basements and homes. Many homeowners resort to poison to deter and control the pests, but unfortunately cats and dogs can also stumble upon it which can have deadly

Welcome to the team, Sarah!Sarah left the shorelines of Traverse City to pursue a degree in Criminal Justice at Western Michigan University. After changing her major and adding a third minor, she graduated in 2016 with a degree in Communication and a certification as a Nonprofit Professional.

Throughout her time at Western, Sarah became very involved in the local nonprofit community. She worked at Building Blocks of Kalamazoo as the marketing and fundraising intern, and at Girls on the Run as the program intern. Loving the impact she made to their missions as an intern, Sarah continues to volunteer with the two organizations till this day.

Sarah also has years of experience working with animals from volunteering with the Animal Rescue Project and another shelter in her hometown. In addition to working part-time as the KHS Volunteer Coordinator, Sarah also works part-time at United Way of the Battle Creek and Kalamazoo Region as their Online Marketing Specialist. Her pug, Dexter, even works at United Way as the face of their Pop Up Giving (PUG) event!

When Sarah’s not working, she enjoys hiking, reading, singing, playing volleyball at the Kalamazoo Sport & Social Club, and then volunteering some more at events like Hidden Kalamazoo.

Knock on the hood. Kick the tires. Slam the door.Outdoor cats seek shelter in the winter, and your parked car might seem like a good place to hide. Give outdoor cats a warning before heading out on the road, just in case. It could save a life.

Do you know the requirements for outdoor dogs?

The State of Michigan defines minimum requirements for the shelter of outdoor dogs in MCL 750.50, which is the law that Animal Enforcement Officers refer back to when concerns are reported for dogs left outside.

MCL 750.50 states:

"Shelter" means adequate protection from the elements and weather conditions suitable for the age, species, and physical condition of the animal so as to maintain the animal in a state of good health. Shelter, for livestock, includes structures or natural features such as trees or topography. Shelter, for a dog, includes 1 or more of the following:

(i) The residence of the dog's owner or other individual.

(ii) A doghouse that is an enclosed structure with a roof and of appropriate dimensions for the breed and size of the dog. The doghouse shall have dry bedding when the outdoor temperature is or is predicted to drop below freezing.

(iii) A structure, including a garage, barn, or shed, that is sufficiently insulated and ventilated to protect the dog from exposure to extreme temperatures or, if not sufficiently insulated and ventilated, contains a doghouse as provided under subparagraph (ii) that is accessible to the dog.

Dogs must also be properly tethered.

"Tethering" means the restraint and confinement of a dog by use of a chain, rope, or similar device.

It is unlawful to tether a dog unless the tether is at least 3 times the length of the dog as measured from the tip of its nose to the base of its tail and is attached to a harness or non-choke collar designed for tethering.
