Prints from the Anne S. K. Brown Collection

The prints available here are from the holdings of the Anne S. K. Brown Military Collection at BrownUniversity Library. They are part of a graphic collection numbering over 14,000 prints, drawings,paintings and watercolors, in addition to over 12,000 printed books, and several thousand scrapbooks,sketchbooks, albums and portfolios. A collection of 6,000 miniature toy soldiers complement thisarchive. The collection, founded by the late Mrs. John Nicholas Brown (1906-1985), had its origins inher interest in military uniforms but grew to encompass military history and bioography, regimentalhistories, army lists, drill, tractics and regulations, and many otherdiverse subjects including costume,military artists, early travel, and world royalty. Today, the collection is primarily concerned with thehistory and iconography of soldiers and soldiering of all nations from circa 1500-1945, and new itemsare being added to the collection annually.

Originally not thought to be Garibaldi but in letter of January18, 1989 from Mr. Draper Hill, identified as being the English Garibaldi enthusiast Colonel JohnWhitehead Peard. Accompanied by 2 photostats from the New York Illustrated News of October 27,2860, and November 3, 1860, showing this water-colour as reproduced in a wood engraved plate inthat journal and 1 wood engraved illustration of seated portrait of Nast outdoors; inserted loose in matwith original water-colour.
