Context
European Commission - Strategic Energy Technology plan targets by 2020:
• 20 % reduction of GHG emissions (when compared to 1990 levels)
• 20 % of renewable energy in the EU energy consumption (2005: EU 8.5 %; 2005: IT 5.2%, 17% in 2020)
• 20 % reduction of energy consumption (baseline 1990, 13 % compared to 2006)
in compliance with the EU energy policy:
reliability, sustainability, market efficiency

Smart Grids are high on the European energy agenda…
Electricity Grids is one of the six industrial initiatives proposed by the EU in the European Strategic Energy Technology Plan (SET-Plan)
The Smart Grid European Technology Platform, has just concluded its work with a Strategic Deployment Document
The EU ask for concrete proposals to set up a European Industrial Initiatives (EIIs) on Smart Grids.
Several European Projects on going on Smart Grids related topics, e.g.:
Address, Susplan, Fenix

DSOs InitiativeObjectives
To define a concrete framework of a common research
and demonstration program to foster the development of
smart grids.
To identify the medium and long term investments
necessary to the development of a European
integrated Smart Grid infrastructure
To highlight shared action plans covering the main pillars
of this development.

The expected benefits from the program
1. Improved peak consumption management
2. More efficient use of energy and further reduction of carbon emissions from the electricity industry.
3. Pave the way to the advent of electric vehicles
4. Start reducing the future investment and operational costs of the EU electricity distribution grids
5. Bring industrial benefits to European manufacturers by:
Mitigating engineering and business deployment risks
 Converging towards European technology standards
Validating the technology scalability and replication
