DECEMBER 07, 2015 BUBBA CREDITS PUTTER, PING ENGINEERS B ecause Bubba Watson is famous for his long drives on tour, naturally his pink G30 driver grabs most of the attention. But the key to winning the Hero World Challenge, Bubba said, was his new custom-milled Anser putter. “I’ve got to thank the PING engineers for this dot system on my putter,” he enthused on live TV. “It worked this week. I guess from here on out it’s up to me now. They did what they had to do. I’ve got to keep putting good.” The “dot system” is how Bubba describes the white dot on the top rail, a departure from the sight line on the flange of the Anser Milled 1 putter he used to win both the 2012 and the 2014 Masters. Bubba tested the putter during sessions with a master fitter in the PING Putting Lab to get his specs just right. His final- round 6-under 66 capped a 25-under performance (67-67-63-66) that featured 27 birdies and two eagles. Bubba used length to his advantage on the driveable par-4’s and reachable par 5’s. He followed booming drives with laser irons (on Saturday he holed out for eagle with his S55 7-iron from 169 yards), a deft short game with his Glide wedges, and uncanny recovery shots. But the difference, Bubba said, was putting, courtesy of a new custom-milled Anser model that he helped create (see story below). He didn’t have much time to celebrate. Afterward, he was off to Asia, where he’ll compete in the Thailand Golf Championship this week.
