Lo incontriamo appena arrivati, ancora storditi per via del fusoe del lungo viaggio che ci ha condotti in volo dallEuropa finoa Kuala Lumpur e da l, con un altro aereo, fino a Terengganu,per poi prendere una macchina e raggiungere, in un paio dore,

il Tanjong Jara Resort. Volto squadrato e pizzetto grigio, non alto madal fisico asciutto, ex capitano nellesercito malese, per di pi nelle squa-dre speciali, ci racconta, tra una sigaretta e laltra a guardarlo bene,sembra proprio Yanez de Gomena, lindimenticabile personaggio diEmilio Salgari - di una carriera militare costellata di avvenimenti vio-lenti, cui non avrebbe mai voluto assistere. Stanco di quella vita, la sua

passione per la natura, la sua sensibilit per la salvaguardia dellambien-te, lo spingono a scegliersi un incarico pi consono alle sue inclinazio-ni. Cosi Capitan Mokh al secolo Mokhtar Mohamad approda,quattro anni or sono, al Tanjong Jara Resort, dove diventa - formal-mente - il naturalista ma - di fatto lautentica anima di questo straor-dinario angolo di Malaysia. Ci parla del suo amore per i negritos, tribindigene nascoste nella giungla, un interesse che lo ha portato a vivereper ben due anni con loro. Gli si illuminano gli occhi quando ci rac-conta che nella lingua dei suoi pupilli non esiste addirittura la parolaguerra; i negritos, infatti, vivono in assoluta pace in piccoli gruppi nelleforeste pi recondite del Paese, anche se minacciati erano appena2.700 nel 1998 dalla moderna civilt.

We meet him as soon as we arrive, still dazed from the time difference

and the long journey which has flown us from Europe to Kuala

Lumpur and from there, on another plane to Terengganu, and by

then in a car for another two hours to reach Tanjong Jara Resort.

Square of face and with a gray goatee, not tall but slim, ex captain in the

Malaysian Army, mainly in special forces, he tells us between one cigarette and

another, to an attentive look he seems to be precisely Yanez de Gomena, the

unforgettable character created by Emilio Salgari - of a military career packed

with violent events, that he would have wished never to see.

Being tired of that life, his passion for nature and his sensitivity for the preser-

vation of the environment lead him into finding duties more congenial to hisinclinations. Thus Captain Mokh real name Mokhtar Mohamad arrived

four years ago, at the Tanjong Jara Resort, where he formally became the natu-

ralist, but is in fact the heart and soul, of this extraordinary corner of Malaysia.

One hears tell of his great love for the Negritos, indigenous tribes hidden in the

jungle, an interest that led him to live with them for two years. His eyes light

up as he tells us that in their language there is no word for war; the Negritos

live in perfect peace in small groups in the most remote corners of the Countrys

forests, even if they are under threat there were only 2,700 in 1998 from

modern civilization. He tells us of his great pleasure in organizing guests trips

of one or more days into the forests for hiking or rafting, but above all to visit

these tribes.

restaurant is literally over a stream -, between the rustling of the palms waving

in the evening breeze, the sweet croaking of the frogs and in the background the

Gamelan, the beautiful traditional Malaysian music.

Gamelan music was born as the court music in the XV century in Buddhist and

Hindu temples in central Java. The instruments xylophones, gongs, drums

with which this very particular musical art is expressed, go back as far as the

year 1000.

The serene rhythm of the compositions, together with the warm and sensual

sonority of the instruments, makes them the ideal background for the physical

and mental relaxation therapies for which Tanjong Jara is rightly famous.

On the coast of Terengganu, in the eastern part of the Malay Peninsula, the

Tanjong Jara Resort, with an area of 17 hectares, opened in March 1979. Its

buildings preserve the most authentic XVII-century Malayan architecture, per-

mitting the Resort to obtain the coveted Aga Khan Award for Architecture in

1987. The guest buildings are inspired by the istana, the Malayan palace, a refi-

ned wooden building where the Sultans lived in the XVII century.

Tanjong Jara is a luxury resort where the guests can do such sports as canoeing,

snorkeling and diving; the cuisine is decidedly high-class. The Resort, a member

The Spa consists of a complex of delicious internal gardens and small pools that

frame the therapeutic center which applies therapies based on the criteria of

Malayan traditional medicine. The anti-stress and aging therapies come from

ancient prescriptions derived from the traditional health science of this Country,

going back more than ten centuries and born out of the influence of three cultu-

res, Arab, Indian and Chinese.

Each treatment starts with Mandi Bunga, a ritual to be found in all Malayan

marriage ceremonies, in which the guest is bathed seven times from head to foot

with auguries of purity, sincerity, health, beauty, happiness, prosperity and longe-

vity. Sesegar Bayu is the traditional Malayan relaxing massage that purifies the

skin and stimulates the circulation. This very ancient technique consists of a long,

The Wellness Center, or Spa, of the Resort combines innovative anti-stress
