The result is the Classis, from the Latin word for fleet, a marine chronometer in gold and Macassar ebony that beautifully illustrates the most important voyages of discovery in the history of sea navigation. “This exciting collabo-ration brings the style and beauty of a Winch design, combined with the precision and expertise of Thomas Mercer,” says Andrew Winch, who also specialises in aviation and interior design. british furniture maker Linley also produced the polished Macassar ebony body, creating a timepiece that

primo risultato di una partnership britannica

d’eccezione, che scriverà una nuova pagina nella

storia degli orologi marini, usati da esploratori e navigatori

per conquistare il globo. Il marchio Thomas Mercer, che

ha giocato un ruolo di primo piano in questo settore

per oltre un secolo, ha infatti unito le proprie forze con

quelle del famoso yacht designer Andrew Winch per

creare e lanciare una nuova generazione del brand

Thomas Mercer. Così è nato Classis (vocabolo latino che

significa flotta), un cronometro in oro ed ebano Macassar

che evoca i più importanti viaggi di scoperta nella storia

della navigazione sui mari.

Andrew Winch designs con la precisione e l’esperienza

di Thomas Mercer», sottolinea Winch, specializzato

anche in design aereo e in architettura d’interni. del pool

fa parte pure Linley, il noto produttore inglese di mobili,

artefice del corpo in ebano Macassar lucido, dando

vita così a un orologio che rispecchia perfettamente il

meglio dell’artigianalità e del design britannico.

Ciascuna delle 12 sfaccettature del corpo del

cronografo, che ha la forma di un verricello, rende

omaggio a una nave che ha ricoperto un ruolo di primo

piano nella scoperta del mondo. «Sin dalle prime

fasi della progettazione avevamo chiara la volontà di

includervi la storia della navigazione», spiega Winch. «E

così sulla cassa sono incisi a mano i profili di 12 navi,

oltre all’anno del loro viaggio e alle coordinate delle loro

scoperte; i nomi di questi vascelli invece sono intarsiati

in legno di seta sul corpo in ebano Macassar».

La forma di verricello è di chiara ispirazione eponima

(il termine inglese winch significa verricello). «Quando

Thomas Mercer mi ha invitato a collaborare per creare

un nuovo cronografo, ho iniziato subito a mettere su

carta le mie idee», racconta lo yacht designer inglese.

«Tuttavia tornavo sempre al verricello, che per me è il

simbolo di secoli di navigazioni ed esplorazioni in cui si

usava il cronometro Mercer. vi ho pensato a lungo, poi

ho trascorso un anno navigando intorno al mondo e, su

una banchina ad Antigua, ho visto il verricello usato da

nelson per alare la sua nave all’interno del porto. Alcuni

anni più tardi questo ricordo mi ha aiutato a disegnare

il simbolo del logo della nostra compagnia: serve un

team per far girare un verricello, per salpare l’ancora alla

partenza di un’avventura e successivamente per navigare

in sicurezza verso la prossima destinazione».

Un orologio così accurato da poter determinare la

longitudine tramite la navigazione astronomica sarebbe

stato un aiuto prezioso per tutti gli yachtsmen. In effetti i

cronometri di marina di Thomas Mercer hanno fatto storia,

presenziando alla spedizione trans-antartica di Shackleton

nel 1914-1916 a bordo di Endurance e alle navigazioni di

altre navi famose, come la Queen Mary. grazie all’apporto

di Andrew Winch designs, gli orologi del marchio si

stanno ora evolvendo in bellissimi oggetti di design

senza inficiare l’eccellenza meccanica che da sempre li

contraddistingue, e saranno ancora destinati a ornare gli

yacht più belli del mondo. «Esposto per la prima volta allo

scorso Monaco yacht Show, Classis è il primo cronometro

marino che abbiamo disegnato: è un vero capolavoro, sia

per il complesso funzionamento sia per l’estetica», spiega

il designer. È rifinito magistralmente in ogni dettaglio,

come la cassa d’oro lucidata a mano, le lancette in acciaio

blu e il solido quadrante con dettagli in ottone che ospita

showcases perfectly the best of british craftsmanship and design. Each of the 12 facets of the timepiece, shaped as a winch, pays homage to a famous ship that played a leading role in discovering the world. “When designing the chronometer we wanted to include the history of sea na-vigation,” explains Winch. “Perfectly hand-carved profiles of the 12 ships are engraved on the case accompanied by the year of the voyage and the coordinates of their discovery; while the names of the 12 ships are beautifully inlaid in satinwood onto the ebony Ma-cassar body.” The form of a winch was also eponymously in-spirational. “When Thomas Mercer invited me to collaborate on a new beautiful timepiece I immediately began sketching my ideas. however, I kept returning to the winch as it is, for me, the symbol of centuries of navigation and exploration using the Mercer Chronometer,” says Winch. “After studying, I spent a year sailing around the world. It was during this time that I sailed across the Atlantic to Antigua and saw the winch on the dock that was used by nelson to bring his ships into harbour. Some years later, this memory helped me sketch the symbol of our company logo – it takes a team to turn a winch, to raise the anchor to depart on an adventure, and in turn, to safely navigate to your next destination...”

A clock so accurate that it could determine longitude by means of celestial navigation was a precious piece of equipment to all yachtsmen. Thomas Mercer marine chronometers made history as part of Shackleton’s trans-Antarctic expedition in 1914-1916 aboard the Endurance and aboard fa-mous ships such as the Queen Mary. Under the new partnership with An-drew Winch designs, the timepieces are now evolving into beautiful design objects that continue the tradition of engineering excellence and which are set to grace the world’s finest yachts. “The Classis is the first Marine Chrono-meter we have designed. It is a true work of art – both functionally and ae-sthetically,” explains the designer. first displayed at the latest Monaco yacht Show, the chronometer is beautifully finished in every detail with a hand-polished gold case, solid brass dial and hands in blue steel. The dial houses an engraved map by Mercator, one of the first cartographers, of the 12 vo-yages. The winding key is cleverly hidden in a drawer inset into a Macassar ebony panel. The Spring détente Escapement mechanism is visible for the first time through the dial. “I am amazed at the beauty of the mechanism – it is a work of art in itself! visible from outside of the casing, the mechanism appears as if it is the chronometer’s beating heart – bringing the Classis to life,” says Winch. It took a highly specialised team of 32 designers and crafts-men over 1440 hours to produce the Classis by hand. A limited edition of 10 is being built. “This chronometer is truly unique, and will be followed by more limited collections from our sketchbook of dreams. I am very proud to have played a small part in the relaunch of the famous clock-making family (now fifth generation) – my first experience of sea navigation design.” •

«Sono stupefatto dalla bellezza degli ingranaggi: sono

di per sé un’opera d’arte», confida Winch. «visibile

dall’esterno della cassa, è come se

fosse il cuore battente di Classis, ciò

che lo porta in vita».

Per produrre a mano questo

gioiello, di cui è stata prevista una

serie limitata di 10 esemplari, è

servito un team di 32 tra designer

e artigiani che hanno lavorato

per 1440 ore. «È un cronometro

davvero unico e sarà seguito

da altre collezioni numerate

provenienti dal nostro taccuino dei

sogni. Sono molto fiero di avere

contribuito, anche se in minima

parte, al rilancio di questa famosa

maison d’horologerie (alla quinta

generazione), che rappresenta la

mia prima esperienza di design

per la navigazione marittima». •
