RECOMMENDED APPROACHES
SPIKING EXPERIMENTSSPIKING EXPERIMENTSSPIKING EXPERIMENTSSPIKING EXPERIMENTS
Results of spiking experiments should be used in a conservative way:
If quantitative recoveries are obtained on spikedsamples, this does not mean that the same efficiency willbe achieved on unknown samples, but if quantitativerecoveries are not obtained on spiked samples, it is surethat no quantitative extraction will be achieved onunknown samples.

A certified reference material (also known as “Standard Reference Materials) is defined as a reference material, one or more of whose property values are certified by a technically valid procedure, accompanied by or traceable to a certificate or other documentation that is issued by a certifying body.
A reference material (also known as “Laboratory Reference Materials) is defined as a material, one or more properties of which are sufficiently well established to be used for the calibration of an apparatus, the assessment of measurement method or for assigning values to materials.
According to ISO:
LRMs CRMs
LA FONDAMENTALE DIFFERENZA E’ NEL FATTO CHE I PARAMETRI CERTIFICATI SONO NOTI CON
UNA ELEVATA ACCURATEZZA ED UNA PICCOLA INCERTEZZA
A certified reference material (also known as “Standard Reference Materials) is defined as a reference material, one or more properties of which are certified, with a stated uncertainity, by a technically valid procedure, which are traceable to a stated reference and accompanied by a certificate or other documentation issued by an accreditated body, to be used for the evaluation of the accuracy of the method(s) used by the laboratory.
A reference material (also known as “Laboratory Reference Materials) is defined as a material, one or more properties of which are sufficiently well established to be used in an interlaboratory exercise for the evaluation of the comparability of data provided by the laboratories, or in the establishment of a quality control chart to evaluate the long term reproducibility of the laboratory.

CERTIFIED REFERENCE MATERIALS (CRMs) CAN
BE:• Pure substances or solutions for calibration
and/or identification• Matrix RMs with a composition close to real
samples with a certified content of elements/compounds
• Methodologically defined RMs for parameters such as leachable or extractable elements/compounds (certified value defined according to a very strict protocol)
CRMs FOR ENVIRONMENTAL ANALYSIS
Certified for chemical, sometimes physical, parameters
Classical matrices are:
• Waters, soils, sediments and wastes for QC of inorganic and organic analysis (e.g. river, lake, sea, ground, and rainwaters, urban, agricultural and industrial soils, fresh and marine sediments, etc.)
• Biological samples for QC of environmental monitoring (e.g. mussels, oysters, plankton, fish tissues, aquatic, marine and terrestrial plants)
MATERIALI DI RIFERIMENTO Caratteristiche
- Stabilità a lungo termine -
Certifying Bodies
• BCR (Standards, Measurements and Testing Programme - EU)
• NIST (National Institute for Standards and Technology - USA)
• NRCC (National Research Council - Canada)
• NIES (National Institute for Environmental Sciences - Japan)
• IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency - NATO)
• LGC (Laboratory for Government Chemist - UK)

• tempo
• temperatura
• umidità
• illuminazione
• pressione (per valutazione della tenuta delle chiusure)
PROVE di STABILITA’
Temperatura ambiente Sotto stress luminosoSolar box (550 Watt/m2)
Sotto stress termico
T = 40°C e 70°C

• UNI ENV 13005 (2000) – (GUM)
• APPROCCIO MISTO GUM/CONVALIDA DEL METODO– IUPAC/EURACHEM
• CONVALIDA DEL METODO– Utilizzo di metodi standardizzati– Materiali di riferimento certificati– Partecipazione a studi interlaboratorio
• UTILIZZO DI CRITERI GUIDA– Horwitz
