DID YOU KNOW… Mariano Rivera is the oldest pitcher in Yankees history to record a

save, surpassing Jim Kaat (40 years, 312 days in 1979)—credit: Elias. Mariano Rivera has been with the Yankees since 1995, appearing

in games in 19 straight seasons…in franchise history, the only other pitcher to appear in at least one game for the Yankees in as many as 16 seasons is Whitey Ford (16 from 1950, ’53-67).

At the time of Mariano Rivera’s first Major League save on 5/17/1996…

• The top television show was “ER.” • The most popular song of the year was Los Del Rio’s “Macarena.” • The top movie at the box office in 1996 was “Independence Day.” • Gas cost $1.30 per gallon and a postage stamp was $0.32. • Major League Baseball had two fewer teams (missing the Tampa Bay Rays and

Arizona Diamondbacks) and had a team in Montreal. • Only 11 of the current 30 Stadiums were being used for Baseball. • Only seven players on a 2013 Major League Opening Day roster or disabled list had

appeared in the big leagues (Mariano Rivera, his current teammates Derek Jeter, Andy Pettitte and Alex Rodriguez, as well as Jason Giambi, LaTroy Hawkins and Darren Oliver).

• Derek Jeter had 48 career hits and Alex Rodriguez had 12 career home runs…Phil Hughes was nine, David Robertson had just turned 11, and both were about to finish fourth grade.

• New York Yankees Director of Communications and Media Relations, Jason Zillo, had been out of college for a year and was three months into his career with the Yankees Media Relations Department, which started as an internship in February 1996.

***The Yankees have gone 686-46 all time in games in which Rivera has had a save opportunity.

***Rivera has collected 42 postseason saves, nearly as many as the next three on the all-time list combined (Brad Lidge-18, Dennis Eckersley-15 and Jason Isringhausen/Robb Nen-11).

A FOND YANKEE STADIUM FAREWELL On September 26, 2013, Mariano made his final career appearance at Yankee Stadium, tossing 1.1 perfect innings with J.R. Murphy behind the plate. He entered with two on and one out in the eighth, stranding both runners. He came back out to pitch the ninth and was removed from the game with two outs in the top of the inning when long-time teammates Derek Jeter and Andy Pettitte came out to call for a pitching change. He left to a standing ovation from the Yankee Stadium crowd.

A ‘Mo’ment of Thanks

On March 9, 2013, Mariano Rivera announced that he will be retiring following the 2013 season. Rivera noted one personal mission he would like to take part in during his final year was to meet and say thank you to the many special employees and fans around the nation who have supported the local teams and the game of baseball during his career.

Throughout the 2013 season, in each town the Yankees visit, Mariano will hold a special meet and greet with these individuals that he has helped select with the assistance of the home team.

Detroit: On April 6, Mariano met with Eddie Goward, a native Michigander who was the former groundskeeper at Tiger Stadium and the longest standing member of the ballpark operations department (40-plus years), Master at Arms First Class Steven Rollins of the United States Navy from Gaylord, Michigan, who recently returned from his third combat deployment, and John O'Neil Sr., who was born in Detroit and is a longtime season-ticket holder dating back to 1991 Tiger Stadium.

Cleveland: On April 10, Mariano sat down with 30 longtime employees from various departments within the Cleveland Indians front office, as well as longtime Cleveland fan John Adams, who has been banging a drum in the bleachers at each Indians home game since 1973.

Tampa Bay: On April 23, Mariano visited with wounded soldiers and their families from James A. Haley Veterans Hospital in Tampa. James A. Haley is unique to Tampa Bay as it is the busiest of four polytrauma facilities in the nation. The VA hospital, located in Tampa, serves over 116,000 veterans living in the four-county are,a as well as those who have recently returned from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan with life-threatening/altering injuries.

Colorado: On May 8, Mariano met with several longtime members of the Rockies front office prior to the game, most of whom have been with the organization during its entire 20-year existence. Included in the group were Mark Razum (Coors Field head groundskeeper since day one), Adele Armagost (Executive Asst. to GM), Jeff Benner (Sr. Dir. of Season Tickets), Kent Hakes (Sr. Dir. of Ticket Sales), Mike Kent (VP Finance) and Steve Burke (Sr. Dir. of Guest Services, who also spent several years of his youth in Panama as his father was in the Air Force). Additionally, Jim Saccomano (Denver Broncos VP of Public Relations for more than 35 years) joined the group.

Kansas City: On May 11, Mariano met with a diverse group of Kansas Citians, including longtime employees, members of the Royals family and outstanding community members. Among the attendees were Tom and Mrs. Pfannenstiel, the Bressette family, Rickey and Ricardo Hernandez (through the Dream Factory), the Borchert family, Sam DiGiovani and Tony Ross of the Bishop Sullivan Center, Joe and Tom Giovagnoli, as well as Paulo Ramirez.

New York-NL: On May 27, Mariano met with approximately 15 Mets long-time season-ticket holders and stadium workers inside Citi Field’s Jackie Robinson Rotunda directly in front of the No. 42 statue. Rivera answered questions about games between the Yankees and Mets, particularly surrounding the 2000 World Series, as well as demonstrated how he grips a baseball to throw a cutter. The next night, he threw out the ceremonial first pitch to the Mets’ all-time saves leader, John Franco, at Citi Field.

Seattle: On June 7, Mariano met with approximately one dozen high school and college students who are participating in the Seattle Mariners “Fielders Group.” The program gives hands-on training to students looking to start careers in baseball and sports.

Oakland: On June 12, Mariano surprised Julie Vasconcellos, who has worked for the Athletics since 1989, serving as either the club’s Office Services Coordinator or Mailroom Coordinator for each of the past 24 years.

Los Angeles-AL: On June 15, Mariano spent time with a number of longtime Angels employees who have deeply contributed to the success of their organization. Included in the group were former Yankees pitcher Jim Abbott (who threw a no-hitter for the Yankees on 9/4/93 vs. Cleveland) and Angels GM Jerry Dipoto.

Baltimore: On June 29, Mariano met with long-time Baltimore employees from throughout the Orioles organization. Among the group were members of the ticket office, grounds crew, scoreboard, technology, graphic design, ballpark operations, special events and baseball operations departments. Also included were an O’s season ticket holder and two women who regularly volunteer and serve as Orioles Advocates.

Boston: On July 20, Mariano met with a diverse group of Boston-area natives. Included in the group were brothers J.P. and Paul Norden of Stoneham, Mass., who each shielded others at the finish line of the Boston Marathon and who each lost a leg. Among the other participants were a 13 year old and a 19 year old who receive support from the Jimmy Fund, a Fenway usher and ticket window representative each in their 46th years with the club, and four members of the Boston area RBI program.

Texas: On July 23, Mariano met with a number of Rangers employees to thank them for their years of service and unheralded work behind the scenes.

Los Angeles-NL: On July 31, Mariano fielded questions from a group of 18 Dodgers employees, including Bill DeLury, who joined the Dodgers organization 63 years ago in Brooklyn. In his time with the employees, he talked about playing on the 1998 Yankees team, the significance of wearing the same uniform number as Jackie Robinson and how he deals with success and failure.

San Diego: On August 3, Mariano met with a nine current and former military members, discussing baseball and thanking them for their service.

Chicago-AL: On August 6, Mariano spoke with a group of 13 baseball fans and their families, ranging from White Sox employees to a member of the U.S. Air Force to a life-long Yankees fan who has lived in Chicago for much of his life.

Toronto: On August 27, Mariano met with 20 long-time Blue Jays employees, ranging from the grounds crew to the finance department. —more—

"I just want to say 'thank you' for those people that no one sees. They are important. Sometimes we do take for granted what it takes to keep the stadium in order for us to come and play baseball -- not only just the field but the facility, the whole stadium. So I chit-chat with them, say 'thank you,' sign for them, take a picture. I just want to make sure they know that I appreciate them."

Boston: On September 12 at Fenway Park, the Boston Cello Quartet played “Enter Sandman” before the entire Red Sox team took the field to present Mariano with a painted portrait of himself from 2005 Opening Day in Boston, the No. 42 Green Monster placard signed by the 2013 Red Sox, an authentic 1934 blue Fenway Park seat with No. 42 on it, the pitching rubber from the visiting bullpen with an inscribed plaque saying “we tip our cap to the great Rivera, a real gentleman, a fierce competitor and a most worthy opponent,” and a donation for his church from the Red Sox Foundation.

Toronto: On September 19 at Rogers Centre, the Blue Jays gave Mariano a $10,000 donation for his foundation and a Kiviuq’s Journey fishing sculpture.

In addition to meeting with individuals in each road city the Yankees travel to this season, Mariano has also taken time to get to know fans at Yankee Stadium.

On April 30, Mariano met with 20 of the Yankees’ longest season-ticket holders—including several who have held season tickets at the Yankees’ home ballpark dating back as far as 1957. Following a Q&A session, each person took a photo with Mariano and received an autographed baseball.

On June 4, Mariano spent time with longtime Yankees stadium employees, including 16 members of the janitorial staff who have been employed at Yankee Stadium as long as Mo has been in the Majors, five security members who have also been here as long as Mo has been pitching and five ticket takers who have been with the organization for more than 40 years.

On July 26, Mariano met with three generations of the Fayle family from Lowville, N.Y. One of the three grandsons caught a baseball tossed to him by Mariano in Toronto’s Rogers Centre several years ago and brought the baseball with him to share the story with Rivera during their meet-and-greet.
