Dieci anni dopo. Per non dimenticare

sono già passati dieci anni da quell’11 settembre 2001. La notizia dell’attacco terroristico alle torri

gemelle del world trade center portò in tutti noi un duplice sentimento: all’angoscia per le vittime e per

la tragedia che aveva colto migliaia di persone innocenti si accompagnò quasi immediatamente la con-

sapevolezza – e anche il timore – per i possibili effetti dell’attentato.

fu un atto vile, compiuto ai danni di migliaia di uomini e donne che – come già altre volte nella storia –

erano “colpevoli” solo di vivere e lavorare in una certa comunità e per questo erano divenuti bersagli o

di un attacco terroristico.

allora era chiara la sensazione di essere tutti, anche noi che abitavamo a migliaia di chilometri di distan-

za da new york, al centro degli eventi. Per certi aspetti, si può dire che quel giorno è cominciato davve-

ro il nuovo millennio; molte delle categorie politiche, economiche o sociali con le quali eravamo abituati

a orientarci furono profondamente modificate. in un mondo che aveva da pochi anni abbandonato la

contrapposizione tra est e ovest e nel quale cominciava a essere progressivamente più chiara la porta-

ta della nuova globalizzazione, l’attentato al world trade center rappresentò drammaticamente la cesu-

ra tra due secoli.

nei dieci anni che ci separano da quei tragici avvenimenti il mondo è profondamente mutato; sono cam-

biate le relazioni tra gli stati e molte delle nostre abitudini e del nostro modo di vivere, di muoverci, di

pensare noi stessi e le nostre società rispetto al resto del pianeta. altri attentati e altre vittime innocenti

hanno purtroppo seguito quelle di new york e tanti uomini e donne sono morti nelle guerre che da quei

fatti sono scaturite.

tuttavia, oggi, a dieci anni di distanza, possiamo dire che il terrorismo non ha prevalso. soprattutto nel-

l’ultimo scorcio del decennio appena concluso è apparsa ancora più evidente la necessità di individua-

re nuove forme di collaborazione internazionale; proprio l’esperienza del “dopo 11 settembre” ci dimo-

stra come soltanto la ricerca di una nuova multilateralità nelle relazioni mondiali può favorire la crescita

e il radicamento dei principi democratici e della libertà.

nel decimo anniversario dell’attacco al world trade center, la Provincia di roma, per favorire il confron-

to, il dibattito e la memoria sui grandi avvenimenti del nostro tempo, vuole ricordare tutte le vittime del-

l’attentato.

Lo vogliamo fare con una mostra dedicata non solo ai fatti di quella mattina, ma alla storia delle twin

towers, ricordandone – attraverso un omaggio per immagini - la progettazione, la realizzazione e la pre-

senza con cui hanno scandito per circa un trentennio le immagini e i tempi di una città straordinaria e

complessa come new york. in queste foto è racchiusa infatti la vita di una comunità e dei suoi abitanti

dai mille colori e dalle mille culture. ed è questo, ci sembra, il messaggio migliore che possiamo dare

contro tutti i nemici della libertà e della democrazia.

Ten years have already gone by since 11 September 2001. News of the terrorist attack on the Twin

Towers of the World Trade Center aroused a dual feeling in each of us: the anguish for the victims and

tragedy affecting thousands of innocent people was almost instantly accompanied by the knowledge –

and also fear – of the possible effects of the attack.

It was an ignoble act that damaged thousands of men and women who – as in other occasions in histo-

ry – were “guilty” only of living and working in a certain community and, as such, became targets for the

terrorist attack.

Even for those of us who lived thousands of miles from New York there was a sensation of being at the

centre of events. In a certain sense it could be said that the new millennium started that day; many of the

political, economic and social groups whom we used to consider as reference points changed dramati-

cally. In a world that only a few years earlier had broken down the barriers between East and West and

in which the importance of the new globalization was gradually becoming defined, the attack on the

World Trade Center represented a sharp break between the centuries.

In the ten years that have passed since the tragic events the world has changed profoundly; relation-

ships have altered between countries and many of our customs and ways of life, of how we think of our-

selves and our nations in relation to the rest of the planet are no longer the same. Unfortunately the New

York attacks have been followed by others and men and women have died in the wars that these events

unleashed.

Nevertheless, ten years on, terrorism can be said not to have prevailed. Above all, towards the end of

the decade that has recently come to an end, the need to identify new forms of international cooperation

has become more and more urgent; the post 9/11 experience has shown us how it is only the search for

a new multilateralism in international relations can encourage the principles of democracy and freedom

to take root and prosper.

On the tenth anniversary of the attack on the World Trade Center, Provincia di Roma wishes to remem-

ber all the victims in the hope of encouraging comparison, debate and recollection of the most signifi-

cant events of our times.

This is the aim of the exhibition dedicated not only to the events of that morning, but also to the history

of the Twin Towers. It is a way of remembering through pictures their design, building and their very exi-

stence, which for some thirty years characterized the extraordinary and complex city that is New York.

These photos encompass the life of a multicultural city and its inhabitants – a melting pot of colours and

cultures. We feel this to be the most effective way we have of opposing the enemies of democracy and

freedom.
