8. Information on the national higher educationsystem

The Italian University System

Since 1999, Italian university studies have been fullyreformed so as to meet the objectives of the "Bolognaprocess". The university system is now organised on 3cycles: the 1st cycle academic degree, that is theLaurea, grants access to the 2nd cycle, and theLaurea Specialistica/Magistrale, the main degree ofthe 2nd cycle, gives access to 3rd cycle doctorateprogrammes resulting in the degree called Dottorato diRicerca. In addition to the mentioned degreesequence after the Bologna pattern, the system offersother degree programmes and related degrees bothwithin the 2nd and 3rd cycle

First cycle. This cycle consists exclusively of Corsi diLaurea. These degree programmes provide studentswith an adequate command of general scientificmethods and contents as well as with specificprofessional skills. The general access requirement isthe Italian school leaving qualification awarded aftercompletion of 13 years of schooling and passing therelevant State examination; comparable foreignqualifications may also be accepted. Admission tosome degree courses may be based on specificcourse requirements. The studies last 3 years. TheLaurea is awarded to students who have gained 180ECTS credits (called Crediti Formativi Universitari -CFU) and satisfied all curricular requirements, including the production of a final written paper orequivalent final project. The Laurea gives access tothe Corsi di Laurea Magistrale as well as to other 2ndcycle study programmes.

Second cycle. The main degree programmes in thiscycle are the Corsi di Laurea Magistrale. They provideeducation at an advanced level for the exercise ofhighly qualified activities in specific areas. Access isby a Laurea degree or a comparable foreign degree;admission is based on specific course requirementsdetermined by single universities. The studies last 2years. The Laurea Magistrale degree is awarded tostudents who have gained 120 ECTS/CFU credits andsatisfied all curricular requirements, including theproduction and public defence of an originaldissertation. Some programmes (namely, those indentistry, medicine, veterinary medicine, pharmacy, architecture, construction engineering/architecture,law, primary education) are defined "single cycleprogrammes" (Corsi a ciclo unico); for theseprogrammes access is by the Italian school leavingqualification (or a comparable foreign qualification);admission is based on entrance exams. The studieslast 5 years (6 years and 360 ECTS/CFU credits in thecases of medicine and dentistry). A Laurea Magistraledegree is awarded to students who have gained 300ECTS/CFU credits and satisfied all curricularrequirements, including the production and publicdefence of an original dissertation. A LaureaMagistrale degree gives access to Corsi di Dottoratodi Ricerca as well as to other 3rd cycle studyprogrammes.

Third cycle. The main degree programmes in thiscycle are Corsi di Dottorato di Ricerca (researchdoctorate programmes); the students/youngresearchers enrolled in these programmes will acquiremethodologies for advanced scientific research, willbe trained in new technologies and will work inresearch laboratories, wherever appropriate. Accessis by a Laurea Magistrale degree (or a comparableforeign degree); admission is based on a competitiveexam; studies last at least three years and include thecompletion and public defence of an original researchproject.

Other programmes.

- Corsi di Specializzazione. These are 3rd cycleprogrammes intended to provide students with theknowledge and skills required for the practice of highlyqualified professions, mainly in medical, clinical andsurgical specialities. Admission is by a LaureaMagistrale degree (or by a comparable foreigndegree) and is based on a ompetitive exam; studiesmay last from 2 (120 ECTS/CFUcredits) to 6years(360 ECTS/CFU credits) depending on thediscipline. The final degree awarded is a Diploma diSpecializzazione.

- Corsi di Master Universitario di primo livello Theseare 2nd cycle programmes intended to provide

students with further specialization or highercontinuing education after completion of the first cycle.Access is by a Laurea degree (or a comparableforeign degree); admission may be subject toadditional requirements. Studies last at least 1 year(60 ECTS/CFU credits). The qualification awarded(Master Universitario di primo livello) does not giveaccess to Corsi di Dottorato di Ricerca or to any other3rd cycle programme since this type of course doesnot belong to the general requirements established atnational level, but it is offered under the autonomousresponsibility of each university.

- Corsi di Master Universitario di secondo livello Theseare 3rd cycle programmes intended to providestudents with further specialization or highercontinuing education studies after completion of thesecond cycle. Access is by a Laurea Magistraledegree (or a comparable foreign degree); admissionmay be subject to additional requirements. Studieslast at least 1 year (60 ECTS/CFU credits). Thequalification awarded (Master Universitario di secondolivello) does not give access to Corsi di Dottorato diRicerca or to any other 3rd cycle programmes, sincethis type of course does not belong to the generalrequirements established at national level, but it isoffered under the autonomous responsibility of eachuniversity.

Credits: degree courses are structured in credits(Crediti Formativi Universitari -CFU). University creditsare based on the workload students need in order toachieve the expected learning outcomes. Each creditcorresponds to 25 hours of student workload, including independent study. The average workload ofa full time student is conventionally fixed at 60 creditsper year. Thus, the CFU fully coincide with ECTScredits.

Classes of Degree Courses: all degree programmesof Laurea and Laurea Magistrale sharing generaleducational objectives are grouped into "classes". Indeveloping the specific learning outcomes of singleprogrammes, Universities have to comply with somenational requirements for each class concerning thetypes (and corresponding amount of credits) ofteaching learning activities to be included. Degreesbelonging to the same class have the same legalvalue.

Academic Titles: Those who receive the Laurea areentitled to be called "Dottore", the holders of a LaureaMagistrale have a right to the title of "DottoreMagistrale", the Dottorato di ricerca confers the title of"Dottore di Ricerca" or "PhD".

Joint Degrees: Italian universities are allowed toestablish degree programmes in cooperation withItalian and foreign partner universities, on completionof which joint or double/multiple degrees can beawarded.
