It was a sunny morning in early summer just after the Second World War, when young Dante, in search of some meat for his family to eat, was traveling through the broken cobblestone streets of Florence on his bicycle. Trying not to loose his balance while avoiding the large holes in the street, he didn’t see a large stone and tripped over it, falling roughly to the ground. Covered in dust and with his knees all scraped, he noticed the wheel of his bicycle had a flat tire. By the time he reached the market, the meat was already all finished. His bright blue eyes suddenly looked down. The butcher noticed the disappointment in young Dante’s face and decided to give him the leftover fat pieces of the meat telling him that if he mixed it together with soda he could make soap. Soap? Soap!!! An item that was quite rare in those times; the war had just ended and what was once considered a necessity that was always available, was now hard to come by. Young Dante got back on his bicycle, went straight to the hardware store to buy all of the necessary supplies that he was told he needed, and headed home. He returned home without any meat, with his knees scraped and bruised, but with a light in his eyes that made the blue shine even more intensely. He asked his mother for the copper basin that she normally used to wash the clothes with, and he closed himself in the garage.For days he tried and tried until he noticed at the bottom of the basin a solid white block had formed. He put it over a small net to dry and once it was ready, he cut it up into pieces and gave them to his family, friends, and even friends of his friends to try. Day by day, demand for his soaps quickly grew and Dante found himself busy doing something that he had created on his own and was all his, and that filled him with pride. He soon bought a piece of land next to his house and by 1947, his small venture had become a full blown company and was registered by the Chamber of Commerce of Florence. Today, the Nesti Dante factory is one of the most highly regarded facilities in Europe for the manufacturing of soap using the method of soap production with the water boiler. The company is proudly run by the second and third generation of the Nesti family who established the company motto: “We work not to be the biggest, but to be the best.”

THE FACTORY TODAY

In the sustainability context, Nesti Dante is a true and concrete example of a company that has fully adopted all aspects of running a sustainable operation.

By implementing changes within our production process, we go beyond simply monitoring our environmental impact, but have truly made it a part of our overall performance.

The use of solar panels and the modernization of lighting systems with the introduction of LED lighting has improved energy efficiency since 2018.

For the preparation of our soaps we only use steam. Zero CO2 emissions.

Attention to safeguarding and respecting the environment occurs through the sustainable supply of raw materials, environmental protection and the fight against corruption and offenses.

Thanks to a special pumping system and highly technological filters, we recover the water from the boilers and reuse it, reducing water waste.

We have no waste. The soap cuttings, via one system of conveyor belts, return to the boiler to be cooked and processed again. Packaging is plastic free.

FIRENZE E LA TOSCANANel 1400, la piccola Toscana aveva circa 500.000 abitanti. Firenze, la sua città più importante, ne contava circa sessantamila. Eppure, nel magico periodo dal 1250 al 1600, questa piccola regione ha generato la più alta concentrazione di grandi artisti di ogni tempo: pittori, scultori, architetti, poeti, scrittori, scienziati, filosofi, inventori, navigatori…Gli artisti appartengono a tutto il mondo ed è emozionante, per noi fiorentini, che la Toscana abbia dato una così grande ricchezza d’arte.

FIRENZE AND TUSCANYIn 1400, the small state of Tuscany had about 500,000 inhabitants. Florence, its most important city, had only 60,000. And yet, in that magic period between 1250 and 1600, this small region generated the largest concentration of great artists of all times: painters, sculptors, architects, poets, writers, inventors, navigators, scientists, philosophers… Artists belong to the whole world and it is exciting for us Florentines that Tuscany has produced such a great wealth of art.

VIADE’ SAPONAI

L’utilizzo del sapone risale a decine di anni fa, ma fu proprio a Firenze, all’epoca della Signoria dei Medici, che fare il sapone divenne una vera professione; sotto la nobile Arte dei Medici e degli Speziali si formò la cor-porazione dei Maestri Saponieri, come testimonia ancora oggi un vicolo nel cuore di Firenze che si chiama Via dei Saponai.

Soap was first used tens of centuries ago, but it was in Florence, when the Medici Familywas in power, that soap-making became a real profession; the corporation of Master Soapmakers was formed under the noble Art of Physicians and Pharmacists, with an alley in the heart of Florence still bearing the name of the Via dei Saponai ( Soapmaker’s street).
