Architetto singolare, pensatore indipendente, parte integrante della scena olandesepur rappresentando un caso a sé, Wiel Arets non segue trend né può esserefacilmente classificato in una categoria. Esponente di punta dell’approccio ontologicoinvece che rappresentazionale dell’architettura (K. Frampton), il suo lavoro tende allaregolarità delle parti ma non è minimalista in senso riduttivo, include un grado moltoelevato di complessità intellettuale ma è anche molto concreto e guarda conattenzione e modestia alla gente comune. Maestro nell’uso dei materiali sia nella loroforma più grezza che sorprendentemente raffinata, la centralità della sua architetturanon consiste in un’attività di elaborazione formale di tipo scultoreo o iconico comemolti suoi colleghi ma tende a una condensazione e intensità che sono la ragionedell’aura speciale di Leggerezza e di Consistenza che caratterizza le sue opere. Il progetto del bagno “Dot” risponde a una sua tipica strategia compositiva: il ricorsoa giustapposizioni non familiari, l’uso di forme talvolta convenzionali applicate inrelazioni non convenzionali. Il risultato mi sembra, appunto, produrre una sottile eraffinata aura di Assenza di pesantezza oggi inusuale nel product design: unbell’esempio di quanto l’architettura può ancora dare al design contemporaneo.
IL CONCEPT DE ILBAGNOALESSI DOT. Se guardiamo all’evoluzione che hanno avutoi manufatti utilizzati nella cultura del bagno degli ultimi duecento anni, così come ciè stata tramandata dalla pittura murale e dagli scritti, vediamo che sono solo unmezzo da utilizzare per la cura del corpo e sono semplicemente fini a se stessi. Infattisono sempre stati concepiti per essere utilizzati e quindi era necessario che avesserouna forma fisica che fosse funzionale e priva di espressione estetica.Ancora oggi, nella cultura giapponese si fa la doccia seduti su un piccolo sgabello,prendendo l’acqua da un secchio di legno e versandola poi sulla testa e sul corpo.Successivamente, ci si cosparge di sapone, lozione esfoliante e shampoo e ci siimmerge in una tinozza quadrata di legno riempita di acqua caldissima, da soli o incompagnia, a seconda delle circostanze, per preparare la mente a quello che verrà.La posizione seduta passiva è tipica del rituale giapponese di purificazione del corpoe della mente. Tutti i sensi sono in sintonia e il legno è il materiale che prevale. La premessa del design della collezione “Dot” è che i singoli elementi non debbonodistrarre dal desiderio di purificare il corpo dalle impurità. Ogni componente deveessere al servizio del relax. Partendo da questo punto di riferimento, il cerchio,sebbene non espressamente presente, è il requisito principale del design degliarticoli in ceramica, ma anche degli elementi cromati e degli arredi. Lo stile formaleè minimale e viene ripetuto in tutte le componenti, così da trasmettere anzituttoun senso di riposo e solo successivamente le intenzioni funzionali, liberando lospazio per il pensiero. Perciò, le linee smussate degli articoli in ceramica, lacircolarità e i diametri costantemente ricorrenti di 48 mm per i rubinetti e 40 mmper gli accessori non riflettono nient’altro che l’eleganza della sobrietà. La vasca da bagno e i lavabi presentano, nella parte superiore, una superficie pianache invita ad appoggiare e ad avere così a portata di mano, vicino all’acqua, tutto ciòche serve per lavarsi. La rubinetteria è composta da elementi tutti dello stessodiametro così da evitare qualsiasi senso di gerarchia; lo stesso dicasi per gli accessori.Il vetro della cabina doccia richiama gli altri articoli e l’ambiente circostante, comeuna componente indipendente, non mediata da elementi estranei.Ora dovrebbe essere chiaro che il senso dell’insieme di tutti gli articoli dellacollezione è generato dalla forza individuale di ognuno di essi, con un suo singoloruolo preciso senza essere preponderante rispetto agli altri.Così, i mobili riprendono le linee formali dei sanitari, uniti a questi ultimi in unlegame armonioso. Si tratta quindi di una collezione ben equilibrata, il cui obiettivoè quello di consentire a chi la utilizza di sfruttare al massimo la quintessenzaoffertaci dal pianeta, l’acqua.
A singular architect, independent thinker and integral part of the Dutch architecturescene while at the same time a case apart, Wiel Arets doesn’t follow trends, nor canhe be easily classified. A key proponent of the ontological rather than therepresentational approach to architecture (K. Frampton), his work tends toward aregularity of parts without being minimalist in the reductive sense. It involves a highlevel of intellectual complexity while also being very concrete, and aims at themajority of people with modesty and attention. A master of materials in both theircrudest and most surprisingly refined form, the central premise of his architecturedoes not reside in the sculptural or iconic elaboration of form like many of hiscolleagues, but tends toward a condensation and intensification that are thereasons for the special aura of lightness and consistency that characterises his work.The “Dot” bath project reflects one of his characteristic compositional strategies:the recourse to unfamiliar juxtapositions, the use of sometimes conventional formsalongside unconventional ones. The result, in my view, generates a subtly refinedsense of weightlessness that is rather rare in today’s product design.

DOT AS CONCEPT. If we look at the evolution of artefacts used in bathing culturein the last few thousand years as passed down to us in wall paintings and writings,we see that they are only a means to body care and not an end in themselves. Theyhave always been designed with use in mind and therefore required a physical formthat was functional and without aesthetic expression. To this day, in Japanese cultureshowers are taken by sitting on a small wooden stool and emptying water from awooden bucket over the head and body. This is followed by lathering up with soap,scrub lotion and shampoo. The bather then soaks in a square wooden tub of veryhot water, either alone or with others depending on the circumstances, to preparethe mind for whatever lies ahead. The passive seated position is typical of theJapanese approach to purifying mind and body. All attributes are tuned to it, woodbeing the pre-eminent material for this purpose.“Dot” is a collection whose design steps off from the premise that its individualpieces should not distract from the wish to purge the body of impurities. Everycomponent of each item should be in the service of relaxation. Within this frame ofreference the circle, though not explicitly present, is the key design determinant forthe ceramic items, chrome-plated elements and furniture alike. The formal idiom iskept to a minimum and is repeated in all components to emanate first a sense ofrepose and only then a fitness for purpose that gives cause for comment. Thus thechamfered shape of the ceramic items, together with the circle and the constantlyrecurring diameters of 48 mm for the taps and 40 mm for the accessories, is intendedto reflect an elegance of restraint. The bathtub and the washbasins have a fully flushupper surface allowing and even encouraging cleaning fluids and other equipment tobe placed right next to the water holding recesses, within easy reach. Thecomponents from which the taps are assembled share a single diameter so that thereis no sense of hierarchy; the same holds for the accessories. The glass of the showerbooth relates to the other items and to its surroundings as an autonomous featureunmediated by elements foreign to it. It should be clear by now that thecombination of all pieces in the collection proceeds from the individual strength ofeach one, which has its own role to play though without being overbearing. Thefurniture assumes the formal idiom of the sanitary ware, engaging with it in aharmonious relationship. Altogether, and for this reason, it is a well-balancedcollection whose aim is to allow its users to enjoy to the full the quintessentialelement our planet has to offer, namely water.

La stanza da bagno è diventata progressivamente uno dei luoghi più interessanti diespansione per l‘immaginario domestico delle persone. Lo scenario complessivo delbagno non è solo il luogo dove puliamo il nostro corpo: è molto di più, ci fornisce isimboli per mediare dentro di noi il conflitto tra codici affettivi che rimandano alleparti meno pregiate del nostro Sé: tra la voglia di regredire e la necessità di crescere, trail codice della madre, centrato sull’appagamento del bisogno e sulla gratificazionedelle nostre parti bambine, il codice del bambino, centrato sulla attività ludica, il codicedella corporeità erotica, centrato sulla contemplazione/esibizione del proprio corpoe il codice del padre, centrato sulla prestazione e sullo stimolo alla crescita. Partendoda questa riflessione il progetto di “One” si è orientato su un linguaggio espressivo dimatrice ludico-onirica nel quale il designer ha saputo fondere con grande ispirazione iquattro gruppi dei codici affettivi. Elementi marcatamente centrati sul codice materno(in particolare le porcellane, tonde e soft) sono così messi in scena insieme conelementi di chiaro codice paterno (i mobili e gli accessori in metallo, dalle lineegeometriche semplici e rigorose), di codice erotico (come i rubinetti, robustamentefallici) e di codice bambino (come il gioco del movimento a scomparsa del rubinettodel mixer per la vasca da bagno, o l’apertura della cassettiera nel mobile alto).L’esito formale di questo progetto, uno dei più completi scenari della stanza da bagnomai realizzati a livello industriale, è fortemente innovativo e esemplare: componendoin equilibrio armonico i quattro codici affettivi Stefano ha infatti saputo superare lapratica del cifrario stilistico personale che ha caratterizzato praticamente tutto ildesign di grido degli anni ’80 e ’90. Utilizzando un approccio progettuale fortementeinnovativo, che definirei meta-stilistico, ha saputo attingere con libertà e maestria algrande vocabolario delle forme che sono state messe a disposizione dell’uomo percreare degli oggetti insieme più emozionanti e più umani.
The bathroom is steadily becoming one of the most interesting parts of the domesticdimension in terms of iconographic expansion. Stepping back a bit, the bathroom ismuch more than just a place where we clean our bodies: it provides the symbols withwhich we mediate the internal conflict between affective codes that reside in the leastvalued parts of the self: between the urge to regress and the need to grow; betweenthe maternal code, centred upon the satisfaction of basic needs and the gratificationof our infantile self; the childhood code, focused on play; the code of corporealeroticism, which derives from the contemplation/exhibition of our own body; and thepaternal code, centred on performance and the drive toward growth. Parting from thispremise, the “One” project is founded upon an expressive language belonging to therealms of dream and play, wherein the designer has ingeniously integrated the fourgroups of affective codes. Elements clearly based on the maternal code (the porcelaincomponents in particular, rounded and soft) are thus combined with those of thepatrenal code (the furniture items and metal accessories, with their simple and rigorousgeometric lines), the erotic code (the conspicuously phallic taps and fittings) and thechildhood code (the playful retractable movement of the bathtub mixer, or themechanism of the drawers in the tall cabinet).The formal aspect of this project, one of the most complete bathroom ensembles everproduced at the industrial level, is powerfully innovative and exemplary: byharmoniously balancing the four affective codes, Stefano has succeeded intranscending his own personal stylistic paradigm, which has characterised practically allthe best design of the ‘80s and ‘90s. Using this highly innovative design approach whichI would call ‘meta-stylistic’, he was able to freely and masterfully draw from the timelessencyclopaedia of forms that have been made available to humankind to create objectsthat are at once more exciting and more human.
