Sperlonga

Sperlonga è un piccolo centro arroccato, lungo la S. S. Flacca, sullo sperone roccioso proteso a mare del

monte Magno. La città deve il suo nome alle grotte naturali - speluncae - che si aprono lungo la costa. E la

bellezza del litorale non sfuggì ai romani e in particolare all’imperatore Tiberio, che vi costruì una residenza di

vacanze, utilizzando una cavità a livello del mare che è appunto conosciuta come “grotta o antro di Tiberio”. Il

Museo Archeologico Nazionale, posto lungo la via Flacca è nato in conseguenza delle scoperte fatte nell’antro

di Tiberio ed è meta costante di turisti soprattutto stranieri. Spingendosi più a ritroso nel tempo è stato ritenuto

che nel comprensorio di Sperlonga dovesse sorgere la mitica città di Amyclae, forse fondata dai Laconi.

Di questo centro, al quale accennano anche scrittori classici non si sa molto. Qualcuno lo colloca subito dopo

Terracina, a occidente del Salto di Fondi; qualche altro sulle rive del lago di Fondi e non manca la leggenda

che la vuole sprofondata nel laghetto di S. Puoto. La storia di Sperlonga in età medievale fu quella di un pic-

colo villaggio di pescatori, presto costretti a misurarsi con le insidie che venivano dal mare per le aggressioni

saracene. Nell’illusione di creare un sistema difensivo vennero costruite quattro torri: la torre Centrale, ormai

incorporata tra le case del paese; torre del Nibbio; torre Truglia, all’imbocco del porticciolo dei pescatori e la

torre Capovento, un tempo visibile dalla Flaccca, fuori del paese, sul suggestivo omonimo strapiombo. Ma tutto

fu inutile e il piccolo centro nell’ agosto 1534 venne raso al suolo dalle orde del corsaro Khair ad-Din detto il

Barbarossa. Di questi eventi rimane la memoria nel nome di Valle dei Corsari, presso la Grotta.

A Sperlonga nessuno può contestare il titolo di “perla” della via Flacca: il paese conserva praticamente intatto

il suo nucleo originario dal sapore tipicamente mediterraneo, con costruzioni bianche, fughe di piccoli archi tra

i ristretti vicoli e di tanto in tanto uno squarcio di mare e di cielo. Il paese ha il suo fulcro nella piazzetta dove

il turista ritrova l’atmosfera di un salotto ospitale e da qui partono viuzze e scalette che portano al mare più

incontaminato del Lazio. Oltre alla singolare identità del nucleo abitato, la città offre una suggestione naturali-

stica, innanzitutto i due laghi, detti anche “gli occhi” di Sperlonga: quello circolare di S. Puoto e il Lago Lungo.

Dopo i laghi, le belle spiagge sabbiose: da nord a sud l’ultimo tratto dell’arco costiero lungo circa 10 Km. che

parte da Terracina e che qui assume nomi singolari: Fontana, Canzatora, Salette, Bonifica. Al di là del paese

si stende la spiaggia di Angolo, con la grotta di Tiberio e, superato il promontorio del Ciannito, che si sporge

fino a mare, l’altra spiaggia, di Bazzano. L’ultima è quella delle Bambole, sulla quale si apre l’omonima grotta.

Sperlonga is a little centre settled on a rocky spur of Magno mount, towards the sea along the SS Flacca.

The city takes its name from the natural grottos – spleluncae in Latin – that open along the coast. Its beauty

was notify by the Romans and in special way by Tiberius the Emperor, who built his holiday residence, using a

sea-level cavity, nowadays know as “Grotto of Tiberius”. The Natural Archaeological Museum settled along the

Flacca road, was born thanks to the discovery arriving from the Tiberius cave, and it is a continuous visiting

place, mostly of strange tourists. Going back in the time. One thinks that in the land of Sperlonga, should be

the mythic city of Amyclae, probably founded by Lacoons.

About this centre, that classical writers wrote about, little is known. Someone settles it just after Terracina, in

the western part of Salto di Fondi, some others thinks that it was along the shore of Lake of Fondi and don’t

lack the legend that says that it have collapsed in lake of Saint Puoto. The history of Sperlonga during the

Medieval age was of a little fisherman village, soon compelled to defend themselves from the invasion coming

from the sea and from the Saracens oppression. Four towers were built imaging to create a defensive sy-

stem: the Central tower, now annexed to the houses of town; Nibbio tower; Truglia tower, at the beginning of

the fisherman’s port and the Capovento tower, once visible by Flacca road, out of the town, on a picturesque

projection. But it was vanish and in the August 1534 it was razed by the troops of corsair Khair ed Din “red

bear”. As a memory of this facts, near the grotto, there is a place which was named the “Corsair’s valley”.

Nobody can deny the title of “Pearl” of Flacca road: the originate typical Mediterranean urban centre is still

the same, with white buildings, flight of little arches among the narrows alley and rents of sea and of sky.

The fulcrum of the town is the little square, where the tourist find the atmosphere of a friendly drawing room

and from which alleys and stairs bring till the most uncontaminated sea of the Latium. Besides the populated

centre, the city offers a naturalistic suggestion, first of all the two lakes, also said “the eyes” of Sperlonga: the

circular lake of saint Puoto and the Lago Lungo (Long Lake). After the lakes, the sandy beach from north to

the southern part of the coast, 10 km long, that start from Terracina, here have singular names: Fontana, Can-

zatora, Salette, Bonifica. Beyond the town the Angolo beach, with the Tiberius grotto and, over the Promontory

of Ciannito, which stands till the sea, the other beach of Bazzano. The name of the last beach is Bambole,

where the homonymous grotto opens.

Fatti non fummo a viver come bruti, ma per seguire virtude e conoscenza, così il sommo poeta faceva parlare Ulisse, mentre si trovava nella terra dov’è situato L’ostello della gioven-tù Marina degli ulivi, quella stessa riviera che prende il suo nome.La suggestiva posizione della struttura lo ren-de unico, infatti il mare dista appena 100mt, dove vi è la spiaggia riservata in esclusiva per i clienti dell’ostello, così come l’ampio parcheg-gio.La struttura dispone di 10 camere suddivise in due, quattro, sei , otto, dieci posti letto, tutte con bagno privato.L’ostello dispone di cucina dove sarà possibile degustare la squisita offerta eno-gastronomica della riviera di Ulisse; Per coloro i quali voles-sero assaggiare la famosissima pizza del mae-stro Spezza, funzionerà il servizio pizzeria sia a pranzo che a cena.Il centro di Sperlonga dista appena 350mt dall’ostello tramite una magnifica passeggiata.

Come programmare, sostenere ed incentivare lo sviluppo turi-

smo di Sperlonga? Questa la domanda che ci siamo posti alla

vigilia della costituzione della Sperlonga Turismo. Interrogativo

luce dell’ attuale capacita’ di attrarre qualificanti flussi turistici

da parte di Sperlonga.

Ed invece, riteniamo, che la nascita di un soggetto pubblico

- privato come quello costituito dal Comune e dai soci della

Sperlonga Turismo, vada incontro, partendo dalla base asso-

ciazionistica, alle nuove e pressanti esigenze del fare turismo

di qualita’, oggi. In buona sostanza, ogni giorno, la Sperlonga

Turismo lavora per offrire una migliore qualita’ dell’ offerta

turistica con un adeguato palinsesto di eventi: culturali, sociali,

ricreativi, sportivi. Nel corso dell’ anno, senza battere passo

alcuno, si tessono rapporti commerciali per garantire gli ac-

quisti degli operatori del settore.

Mentre, con iniziative d’ immagine sui mezzi di comunicazione

di massa, si mantiene alto il livello di attenzione sui potenziali

“clienti” di Sperlonga. In definitiva, Sperlonga Turismo vuo-

le essere ed e’ un grande collettore di energie positive da

riversare tutte in un obiettivo comune: quello di sostenere

Sperlonga ad essere, sempre piu’, il “luogo del buon vivere”

How to program, to support and stimulate the Sperlonga

tourism development? This is the question that we have set

ourselves on the eve of the “Sperlonga Turismo” constitution.

The question may seem simplistic and obvious, especially in

the light of the current ability to attract qualified tourist flows

from Sperlonga.

And instead, we believe, that the birth of a public - private

entity such as the one constituted by the municipality and by

members of “Sperlonga Turismo”, starting from the associa-

tions, accommodates new and increasing demands of quality

tourism, today. Basically, every day, the “Sperlonga Turismo”

works to provide a better quality of the tourist offer with

an appropriate schedule of events: cultural, social, recrea-

tional, sports ones. During the year, without beating steps,

commercial relationships are weaved to ensure purchases of

practitioners.

While, with image initiatives on mass medias, a high level of

attention on potential “customers” of Sperlonga is maintained.

Ultimately, “Sperlonga Turismo” wants to be and it’s a great

collector of positive energies to be repaid all in a common

goal: to support Sperlonga and to be, more and more, the

“place of the good life” ... and not only in summer.
