Normans and Spanish, and by each of them inherited a piece of the

WINE AND FOOD
Thanks to the fact of having been influenced by the culture of
many people, who had occupied it in the course of its history,
Sicily is renowned throughout the world for its cuisine as well,
characterized by strong and spicy flavors, and for the genuine
fish, caught in the blue crystalline waters of southern
Mediterranean.
Due to its complexity, its cuisine is often considered to be the
richest and the most scenic specialties of Italy.
Some of the most well-known dishes (popular in the entire
world) are the cassata, cannoli, granita and arancini. The
fertile soil produces citrus fruits in big quantities, so this
Region is often called the “land of lemons and oranges”.
Sicily has always been the core of the Mediterranean
civilization; it legitimately aspires to be recognized as the
"land of vines and olives," which remembers the ancient
legend that screw sprouted for the first time, thanks to the
tears of thirsty Dionisio. Thus was born the wine, the nectar of
gods, bestowed upon men to comfort their labors and delight
their senses.
It is the Italian region with the highest winemaking heritage of
the whole nation. Its climatic conditions, mild temperatures,
hilly lands, sea breeze and sun lit, are reminiscent of the
territories of California and Australia.
Some Sicilian grapes are famous worldwide, such as Nero
d'Avola (red grape) and Inzolia (white grape). International
varieties of grape have also a significant presence in Sicily,
since the soil sublimates the taste in power and quality.
It is also famous for the production of sweet wines. The more
famous are Marsala, known throughout the world, the
Malvasia delle Lipari, Moscato di Noto and Siracusa Passito di
Pantelleria and Zibibbo.

Palermo is an Italian city of about 653.000 inhabitants, is the capital of
the Province and the Region of Sicily, and aspires to become the capital of
the “Union for the Mediterranean”. Stretched over a large creek at the edge
of Mount Pellegrino, in ancient times was one of the most flourishing cities
of the Mediterranean. Palermo is full of natural beauty and is a popular city
of European art. Some of its most important monuments, (witnesses of a
glorious history) are: the Cathedral with the tombs of the Norman kings, the
Norman Palace (first Parliament House in modern history) and its built-in
Palatine Chapel, the Martorana with its precious mosaics, the Church of St.
John of the Hermits (characterized by a typical Islamic architecture), the
Zisa, the Abbatellis Palace and the Teatro Massimo: an extremely charming
city that has true gems of art, inherited from the past, thanks to the
occupation of Arabs, Normans and Spanish. Goethe loved this city, and
wrote "In the public garden, near the port, I spent some magnificent hours
from alone. It 's the most wonderful place in the world“. Palermo has a
beautiful promenade as well: Mondello (which is the town beach), with its
soft and light color sand and clean crystal sea. Not miss to visit its historic
markets: Vucciria, Ballarò and Borgo Vecchio.
Taormina Despite the fact of being a small town (with only 11.000
inhabitants), Taormina is considered to be one of the most beautiful,
welcoming and fascinating city of the whole island. It ‘s an international
holiday resort, with renown five-star hotels and luxury boutiques of major
global brands. With its enchanting natural landscapes and historical
monuments, as well as the prestigious cultural events such as the
"Taormina Arte", the tourist season lasts all year (the higher peak is in
August, and the lower is in January / February).
Taormina is located on a hill, at about 250 meters above the sea level, at
the midway between Messina and Catania, in a strategic location to enjoy
the fast trips on the east coast of Sicily. The origin of the city starts in the
fourth century and its beauty is represented mainly by the presence of
important monuments such as the Greek Theatre, still used for several
concerts and cultural activities.
Catania is located on the southern extremity of Etna and overlooks the
Gulf of the same name, occupying the extreme hillsides of the volcano that
slope to the Ionian Sea. The town, with its population of approximately
295.000 inhabitants, is the second most populous municipality of Sicily and
the fourth in the South, and is located at about 210 km from Palermo and
97 km from Messina. The urban area of Piazza Verga is characterized by
residential, public and professional studies, as well as popular spaces as
Villa Bellini. Recently, due to its rich history and landscape, the Etna was
declared by UNESCO a “cultural heritage of humanity” : is one of the main
natural attractions of Sicily, as well as the highest mountain on the island.
Etna is also one of the most active volcanoes in the world and the most
dynamic in Europe. Its altitude changes with each eruption, and although
over the centuries a few lava flows have reached the coast, is one of the
major destinations of Sicily, with thousands of visitors every year. In winter
the Etna offers skiing holidays, and during the summer, breathtaking hikes
in the woods.
Siracusa with its 123.000 inhabitants, it is the fourth largest city in Sicily
by population (after Palermo, Catania and Messina). Located on the south
eastern coast of the island, it is the capital of the province as well as being
one of the most important international tourist centres throughout the
region, for its beautiful natural landscape, beautiful sea and the numerous
historic monuments mainly located in the island of Ortigia (declared an
UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005, thanks to its medieval and baroque
features). It can be divided into two different areas: the island of Ortigia,
linked to the mainland by a short bridge, and the main centre of Siracusa. It
was the most important Greek city and, even today, you can relive its
glorious past by visiting its vast archaeological site: temples, a theatre, an
amphitheatre and a necropolis. The white sandy beaches of Siracusa slope
along the coast south of the city, over the ark of the harbour; the city is also
famous for its white cliffs and very clear sea, a true paradise for fishing
lovers and for underwater photography.

The Hotel Villa Igiea overlooks the Tyrrhenian Sea and was built in Art
Nouveau style in the heyday’s cultural life of the city. The original neo-
Gothic style building reminds of a small castle with turrets and
battlements, and was purchased in 1898 by Ignazio Florio Jr. to make a
sanatorium (for its milder winter temperatures, competing with the
famous weather station in Nice and San Remo). Just four years later, it
was re-designed (with the art-nouveau style), to be used as a guest house,
by an important exponent of International Modernism and Liberty Style -
the architect Ernesto Basile – reflecting the taste of the “belle époque” of
the end of '800.
The Hotel is located in Palermo, Salita Belmonte nr. 43, at about 4 Km
from the city center, located on the slopes of Park Belmonte and Monte
Pellegrino. It was built on the northern side of the Gulf of Palermo, on a
sloping area that reaches the sea.
It has accessibility by all kind of transport; the property is approximately
4 km from the Highway A29 Palermo / Mazara del Vallo, 7 km from the
motorway A19 Palermo / Catania, 4 km from the Central Railway
Station, 30 km from the 'Falcone and Borsellino International Airport and
1.5 km from the harbor of Palermo.

The refined interior decoration, with feminine and floral patterns, and the
polychrome velvety and sensual architectures, still visible into the Villa,
were designed by Basile, with the exception of the living room, whose
frescoes belong to the painter E. Von de Maria Bergler. Everything is
permeated by the original planning of Basile who had an extraordinary
soft touch, inspired by the great European painting style.
Two other important rooms of the Villa have to be mentioned: "Sala
Donna Franca Florio", a famous noblewoman admired by Kaiser Wilhelm
II and emphasized by D'Annunzio, where he exhibited his famous portrait
by Giovanni Boldini; today, this room has become the main restaurant.
The "Sala Basile," which was the former dining room, is now a large hall
used for conferences with a capacity of about 120 people, and is
considered one of the masterpieces of international modernism and one
of the finest Liberty works of Palermo.

The Grand Hotel Et Des Palmes is a former patrician house built in
1874 as a private residence of the family Ingham - Whitaker; in
1907, the new owner of the house decided to transform it into a
hotel, symbol of the Belle Epoque. The Grand Hotel Et Des Palmes is
the most prestigious and historic hotel in Palermo, and it is between
these rooms that Wagner refinished the "Parsifal" and Crispi laid the
foundations for National Italian unity. It is located in the Municipality
of Palermo in Via Roma nr. 398 in the centre, near Piazza
Politeama. The area is characterized by multi-storey buildings, both
residential and commercial, built between the '500 and' 900. Via
Roma is an important street, provided by several lines of public
transport; it is one of the busiest shopping streets in the city, with
many shops of famous national and international brands.
In addition to these shops, the Hotel is close to two of the most
important urban centers of the city: Piazza Verdi, the famous Teatro
Massimo, where starts the Via Ruggero Settimo, commercial and

1891, conceived to house the International Exhibition of Palermo. It
was initially raised from timber support structures, intended to be
dismantled easily at the end of the prestigious show. However, as
often happens with similar constructions, its success and the idea of
transforming it to be used as a hotel led to the building that we see
today, following careful restoration by the architect Basile to whom
the project was entrusted in 1925.
It is located in the centre of Palermo, in Via Marchese Ugo nr. 3, near
the English Garden and Viale della Libertà. This area (which goes
from Piazza Politeama to Via Notarbartolo) was the first area of
expansion of the urban fabric in the old town, since the first decades
of the nineteenth century. The nobility of Palermo built here their
residences, palaces and villas, at first in the neoclassical style, and
then, in the early '900, following the style of Art Nouveau, among
which some buildings have a considerable architectural interest, like
some works of the architect Giovan Battista Filippo Basile .
Therefore the neighborhood is identified as one of the most
prestigious areas of the city, with both offices and residences; in this
area there are also many of the most famous shops of Palermo.
The urban layout is characterized by the presence of ancient villas
such as Villa Gonzaga, Villa Bordonaro and their corresponding
parks.
The property is approximately at 5 km from Palermo’s Central
Railway Station, about 10 km from the Highway A19 Palermo /
Messina / Catania, 4 km from the A29 Palermo / Trapani and 28
km from the airport "Falcone-Borsellino" and 2 km from the
Palermo’s Maritime Station.

The International Conjuncture
In 2013, international tourism has continued
its strong growth (of both arrivals and
income), leaving behind the 2009 recession.
According to the data system released by the
World Tourism Organization (UNWTO
Barometer, June 2014) in 2013 the tourism
sector experienced an enhancement of
international tourists, who arrived to 1.087
billion quota , a 5% increase compared to the
previous year.
Europe is confirmed as the continent with the
largest number of tourists (563.8 million),
followed by Asia (248.7 million), the
Americas (168.2 million), Africa (55.9
million) and Middle East (50.8 million).
Italian destinations in the international
context
In the 2013 ranking of the world's most
popular tourist destinations, Italy ranks the
5th place for international arrivals and on the
6th place for foreign exchange earnings.

Analysis of foreign tourist flow in Italy
According to data released by Istat (Sources:
ISTAT National Institute of Statistics), the
2013 season shows a further growth of
international arrivals that have touched
quota 50.2 million, a 3.1% increasing,
compared to 2012; positive trend in
overnight stays amounted to 184.8 million (+
2.3%).
According to the same source, the first four
months of 2014 show a consolidation of the
growth of foreign tourism: arrivals + 3.6% ;
+ 3.4% attendances.
In Sicily, in 2012 there were 1.7 million
arrivals and a total of 6.3 million
attendances (Sources: ISTAT National
Institute of Statistics).
Expenses budget of Foreign travelers in Italy
According to the Bank of Italy, expenditure of
foreign travellers in 2013 maintained the
positive trend registered in 2012: foreign
travelers have brought to Italy 33.064 million
euro, a 3,1% increasing compared to 2012
(an additional 1.008 million euro). The
percentage increasing is even higher (+
6,9%) if related only to expenses made by
foreign travelers on vacation.
Analyzing the trend of expenditure by
geographical area, in 2013 there were
different trends: significant increases in the
center (+5,5%) and the North West (+5,4%),
lighter increasing in the South and Islands (+
1,7%) and an appreciable decrease in the
Northeast (-2,4%). In Sicily it grown from
1.041 million (2012) to 1.100 million (2013)
with a significant increase of 5,7% (source:
Bank of Italy).
The perception of tourism in Italy
An interesting survey (source: ENIT National
Tourism Agency) performed on a sample of
people who had a holiday in Italy in the last
four months (latest data: July 2014), shows
that Italy is promoted with flying colors (in a
synthetic scale from 0 to 100 used by
sociometric / Expert System, the result is 77,
well above the threshold of 60 points,
conventionally regarded as the minimum to
be considered successful or adequate).
Some of its successful elements are
restaurants and catering (defined
"reasonable" and "worth" in the survey). After
food, particularly appreciated seem to be two
elements that characterize our landscape:
the “piazza”s and beaches. Shopping is
another beloved activity, to be done in some
magnificent historical centre in an ancient
city of Italy; and another point of strength is
the quality of the hospitality industry.
Successful resorts offer quality in both
landscape, art-historical, food and, of course,
the quality of the hotel itself.

Among the Tourist resorts that offer the best
experience, the first place to be mentioned is
Taormina (for its excellent mix of
borghigiana atmosphere and culture of
hospitality). Scrolling down the list of the
destinations we find other seaside resorts.
Among the cities of art, the first places go to
Parma, Lucca and Siracusa; bigger art cities
(such as Rome, Florence and Venice) are the
most quoted, but they are surpassed due to
the quality of the experience.

Summer 2014 Performance – Italy’s
tourism market
The service industry expects benefits from
the recent approval (July 28th, 2014) of the
Law which defined some initial steps to
support the revival of Italian tourism.
Even though a reduction was revealed in the
resorts mainly visited by the Italian families
(forced by the crisis to give up or to reduce
the expenses of holidays), the President of
Federalberghi emphasizes instead the
growth (of +2.5%) of foreign tourists coming
to Italy, which confirms the excellent value
for money of the Italian system.
Unioncamere Tourism declares that the
increase in sales is ascribable thanks to 4
and 5 stars hotels.
In 2013 the tourism balance of payments
recorded a € 12.755 million surplus
(+10,5% if compared to the 2012 income,
i.e. € 11.543 million). The positive balance is
attributable to the expenditure generated by
foreign travellers in Italy (an increase of
+3,1% if compared to 2012).
ENIT SUMMARY summer 2014 (edited on
July 10th, 2014)
Europe accounts at 42% international
tourism expenditure; in 2013 the European
market had the largest growth in absolute
terms ($ +35 billion).
China, Russia and Brazil continue to show
the best performance in terms of outgoing
tourism market: in 2013 those 3 countries
globally spent $ 40 billion, accounting for
50% of the increase in international
revenues (amounted in $ 81 billion). China,
with its $ 129 billion of tourist spending
abroad and a further increase of 26%, was
confirmed in 2013 as the first market in the
world; Russia has registered an increase of
25% ($ 54 million) and Brazil + 13% ($ 25
billion).
The touristic flow in Italy: first clues of 2014
In the first months of 2014, foreign tourism
in Italy showed a positive trend. According to
data collected by the Bank of Italy, from
January to April 2014 there was an increase
of +3% of foreign travellers, along with a
further increase in expenditure of +5,3% (an
extra 396 million euro than in the same
period of 2013).
Sales abroad in 2014 : destination Italy
The data related to Summer 2014, collected
by ENIT, shows that Tour Operators involved
with the sales of holidays in Italy had a
broad satisfaction. Specifically, 5,7% of T.O.
affirm that they were increased, 29,6% say
they have remained stable and only 10,7%
of T.O. say that they are in decline, if
compared to the same period of last year.

Focus on foreign markets in Sicily
Germany - Tour operators Thomas Cook,
TUI, Olimar, FTI Touristik, registered an
increasing/stable trend compared to last
summer, positive sales for destinations in
Sicily
Swiss – National operators (Flex Travel,
Verkehrsbetriebe STI, TUI Suisse) reported a
good level of bookings for Italy, in Sicily are
very required wine tours and Southern Italy
trips.
UK - registered an increasing in sales
(+12%) for beach holidays (couples and
families) with a stay in Sicily between 7 and
10 nights.
France - one of the top destinations as
individual holiday is Sicily. Direct Flights
from Paris to Catania and Palermo.
Spain - the segment of luxury tourism is
growing: the demand for 5 star hotels is
increasing considerably.
Sweden - charter operators Airtours and
Fritidsresor recorded a significant sales
increase for Sicily. According Vagabond
Sweden, the leading magazine of travel,
their readers picked Sicily as one of top
three positions among the ideal summer
destinations. The Scandjet Airline company
will begin to offer several flights from
smaller airports in Sweden directly to
Comiso, a Sicilian town.
Russia - most Russians prefer beach
holidays, possibly associated with visits to
our cities of art. One of the most popular
destinations is Sicily. Early introduced:
Alitalia-Air One provides flights from
Moscow and St. Petersburg to Palermo;
from Krasnodar to Catania.
USA - The company Meridiana will provide
flights from New York to Catania and
Palermo from May to October.
Canada - One of the most popular Italian
region is of Sicily.
Brazil - registered a +15% increasing. One
of the most visited Italian regions is Sicily.
Most popular tourism request are for cities
of art, food and drink tours, religious
tourism, shopping tourism and beach
holidays.
United Arab Emirates - the sales trend for
Italy increased significantly.
China - this summer was registered a
greater number of Chinese tourists.

very popular destinations, not only beach
