With Konchalovsky we talk on the waterfront (the edge of my eye I notice Russian tourists - waiting to get an autograph), he was invited to Naples festival director and director Luca de Fusco - he saw "The Seagull" and "Uncle Vanya" on tour in Rome and Venice, traveled to Moscow to watch "The Three Sisters", and for the Naples festival offered to do Shakespeare. Konchalovsky chose "The Taming of the Shrew" - what else is there to show the Italians, they do not of themselves, especially in the genre of commedia dell'arte, whose traditions have developed right here in Naples. On his approach to the play Konchalovsky said: "This is the world of Shakespeare, in interpretation - mine. It can be quite lively, can be modern or old and dusty. But it can not be associated with such a concept, such as urgency. " And he continues: "Comedy - is a risk. After all, laughter is different - sometimes laugh off his pants, sometimes laughter from the fact that people know something, sometimes laughing thankful for the love - love for the artists to their characters. For this director, and there is - to find the artists, for which they may love their characters. And if it turns out the artist to convey his love for the character, the audience is very grateful for the fact that he shared the love. Therefore, in comedy, people laugh is not evil. In a satirical - yes, in a farce, or, say, Brecht. And in Shakespeare people laugh as they laugh, say, Fellini. He has no bad characters, he loves all as God. " The play Konchalovsky moved to the first half of the XX century, his characters are hilarious and carefree, they seem to be still unaware of Mussolini and enjoy all the pleasures of dolce vita, they are unrestrained in Italian, gesticulating, and, of course, yelling at each other, but there a hug. Women wore dresses with low waist (Bianca, of course, in white, Katharina - in black), under which every now and then peep juicy stockings, men - in elegant suits and wide-brimmed hats. They are drinking wine and listening to gramophone - the Italians in the audience will immediately recognize the voice actor Vittorio De Sikka and even sing along. Konchalovsky chose the song for sure is no accident: it sounds like Mario Camerini in the movie "What the men are bastards!" Which, as the name already, all about the same Taming of the Shrew. scenography In Konchalovsky was guided by the Italian surrealist Giorgio de Chirico, his portrayal of Italian areas , doctored video artist (eg, hand appears and moves with a bang at home), in fact, is the main decoration. And, of course, in the tradition of the theater Konchalovsky - make-up tables and brackets with costumes: actors, even those that appear only in the final, all the time on stage, helping to dress colleagues or just watching. Konchalovsky looked a hundred actors and certainly sought (except professionalism, of course) texture: Baptista - the spitting image of Salvador Dali (with the same thin mustache curled up), hydrangeas - the embodiment of the military articles, emphasized rude, as if carved from stone face with a prominent chin that each again makes room to laugh when he gets into ridiculous situations in Lyutsentsio gurgling laugh (and it seems he only does that laughs when there is maneuvering toward Bianca). Geezer Gremio before slowpoke that every now and then stops in mid-sentence, so that the speaker is forced to knock on his bowler, so he woke up. Bianca - cutie Katarina (wonderful Masha Muzi) - as if the person with the cards that fans cherish the well-known actresses. She paintings and mannered, and distinctive, husky, voice completes the image of a bitch that - ha ha! - Petruchio tamed-taki (brilliant work of Federico Vanni), as eloquently says the final pose, which allegedly subdued little woman straddled a happy hubby is naive to believe that the winner of this fight it out. "And you had someone to tame?" - Ask Konchalovsky. "It's always - just myself ..."

Napoli Teatro Festival ItaliaThe Napoli Teatro Festival Italia 2013 will kick-off on 4 June and run until 23 June. Fifty four performances, 24 debuts, including 10 world premieres, and 30 new Fringe performances. This year’s event will be staged at a number of diff erent venues across the city from Teatro San Carlo to the Pietrarsa National Railway Museum. A not-to-be-missed event for theatre enthusiasts from all over the globe.
From Teatro San Carlo to the Pietrarsa Railway Museum: the sixth Napoli Teatro Festival Italia 2013,
scheduled to take place from 4 to 23 June, has chosen a unique setting for the event, a symbolic
connection between the oldest opera house in Naples and the fi rst train ever to run in Italy on the
Naples-Portici route. A rich diverse events calendar: 54 performances, 24 debuts, including 10 world
premieres and 30 new Fringe performances. Although originally conceived as a purely theatrical
festival, it now embraces a number of other genres including performances by Neapolitan, French
and Argentinean dancers, Italian actors and foreign theatre companies in what its artistic director
Luca De Fusco defi nes as a “fun-fi lled circus”.
This year’s curtain raiser (on 4 June) will be held at Teatro San Carlo for Italian premiere of Don
Quichotte du Trocadéro, a mixture of dance, drama and acrobatics presented by French
choreographer Josè Montalvo. This will be followed on 5 June with a concert by Enzo Avitabile with
the Bottari di Portico at the Città della Scienza, in support of its reconstruction. On 6 June British
director Peter Brook returns to the Teatro Sannazzaro with a world premiere of Samuel Beckett’s The
Lost Ones. From 8 to 10 June, the festival will see the staging of the Taming of the Shrew by William
Shakespeare, directed for the fi rst time in Italy by Russian director Andrej Konchalovski. And then
again Circo Equestre Sgueglia by Raff aele Viviani, directed by Argentinean-born Alfredo Arias and
Anthony and Cleopatra, produced by Luca De Fusco.
FOCUS
Spam, directed by Argentinean director Rafael Spregelburd will makes
its world premiere debut, while Jean-Louis Martinelli will stage an
African tableau with Une nuit à la Présidence. Another eagerly-awaited
performance is Desdemona, another Italian premiere, directed by Peter
Sellars in collaboration with Noble Prize winner for Literature Toni Morrison.
The festival will also host four dance performances: in addition to Montalvo’s
curtain raiser, audiences will also have a chance see the return of the Israeli
Vertigo Dance Company, which this year will be celebrating 20 years in
showbiz with Vertigo 20; the festival also marks another return for Paco
Dècina, with Précipitations and fi nally Mishima, choreographed by
Brazilian choreographer Ismael Ivo. The old carriages will act as an unusual
backdrop to performances, romanticized sagas and dramas including
Il Maestro di Cappella dei Mendicanti by Mariano Bauduin, Polvere
ritorneremo by Neapolitan playwright Claudio Buono and Nata sotto una
pianta di datteri directed by Gigi Di Luca. Conversely, the single-act text by
Eduardo De Filippo Sik Sik, the magical maker will see a collaboration with
the Benevento Città Spettacolo.
The 2013 edition of the Festival will end with Arrevuoto-Viviani involving
the participation of adolescent Roma and Neapolitans in a work inspired by
Viviani’s Zingari (Gypsies).
The hub and ticket offi ce of the Napoli Teatro Festival Italia are located at the
Teatro Mercadante, in Piazza Municipio.
IN THE WORDS OF LUCA DE FUSCO,
ARTISTIC DIRECTOR OF FESTIVAL 2013
“A vast international showcase for theatre and dance: direction by Sellars
and Martinelli and choreographies by Montalvo and Wertheim are an
example of the best of the contemporary scene. Neapolitans, tourists and
theatre lovers can enjoy outstanding performances that have come to Italy
following their enormous international success. Not only international
greats but also workshops of theatrical art: the performances by Brook, Arias,
Konchalovskij, Ivo and myself originated in Naples and will be presented
here as world premieres and the public will have a chance to follow their
evolution at open rehearsals. I did not want Naples to act merely as a
backdrop to the Festival but rather as one of the themes of the event itself.
This is not only a beautiful city like Avignone or Edinburgh but a theatre
capital. It is therefore right that the Festival increasingly serves as a place of
theatrical production. A choice based not only on theatrical reasons but
also on a cultural policy: increasing the number
of performances produced means giving more
work to actors and technicians, increasing the
number of creations means increasing the
number of world premieres capable of attracting
the attention of the media and tourists alike”.

MAY OF MONUMENTSThe Maggio dei Monumenti or May of Monuments festival which, for fi ve weekends, has unveiled the city’s hidden treasures and masterpieces, will end on 2 June. For the duration of the festival,
places normally closed to the public have been made accessible to all those wishing to visit them, thus rendering the city an open-air museum featuring unusual itineraries of extraordinary beauty and artistic value. The event is sponsored by the Council for Tourism and the City of Naples which, to mark the occasion, has opened a number of never-seen-before venues: more than one hundred courtyards, cloisters and sacristies, both public and private. The rich and diverse events calendar will extend into the fi rst weekend of June with guided tours, concerts, performances, shows, art installations and exhibitions. From the old centre to the Borgo dei Vergini (Quarter of the Virgins) right up to Sanità; from Forcella to Chiaia passing through Posillipo up to the Vomero hill, with the cloisters and gardens of the Certosa di San Martino and the Duca di Martina Museum. And then again, walks that will allow visitors to ascend the historic Pedamentina stairway connecting San Martino to Montesanto, continuing onwards to Petraio as far as Chiaia, in a bid to off er all those visiting Naples a breathtaking view over the city. This event has given sightseers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to explore cloisters shrouded in mystery and hidden from public view for centuries, taking them in discovery of some of the city’s best-kept secrets including the convent of Santa Maria Regina Coeli or that of the Clarisse Nuns or courtyards that have been closed for almost a decade such as that of Santa Maria delle Grazie or San Giovanni Battista delle Monache.
