Tropar of the cross, tone 1: Save Your people, O Lord, and bless Your inheritance.* Grant victory to Your faithful people against enemies,* and protect Your community by Your cross. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and for ever and ever. Amen! Kondak of the 3rd Sunday of Lent, tone 7: The gates of Eden are no more guarded by a blazing sword,* for the tree of the cross has gloriously extinguished it,* destroying the sting of death and the victory of hell.* O my Saviour, You went to those in Limbo crying aloud, “Return to paradise!” Instead of “Holy God”: To Your cross, O Master, we bow in veneration, and we glorify Your holy Resurrection. Epistle: A reading from the Epistle to the Hebrews (4:14 - 5:6) Brothers! Since, then, we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast to our profession of faith. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weakness, but one who was tempted in every way that we are, yet never sinned. So let us confidently approach the throne of grace to receive mercy and favor and to find help in time of need. Every high priest is taken from among men and made their representative before God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. He is able to deal patiently with erring sinners, for he himself is beset by weakness and so must make sin offerings for himself as well as for the people. One does not take this honor on his own initiative, but only when called by God as Aaron was. Even Christ did not glorify himself with the office of high priest; he received it from the One who said to him: “You are my son; today I have begotten you”; just as he says in another place, “You are a priest forever, according to the order of Melchizedek.” Alleluia Verses: Remember the people you long since made your own.

Кожен бо архиєрей, узятий з-поміж людей, настановляється для людей у справах Божих, щоб приносив дари та жертви за гріхи; що може співчувати нетямущим та введеним в оману, бо й сам він неміччю охоплений, і тому повинен так за людей, як і за себе самого приносити жертви за гріхи. Чести ж цієї ніхто не бере сам собі, лише той, хто покликаний Богом, як Арон. Так і Христос не сам собі присвоїв славу стати архиєреєм, вона бо від того, який до нього мовив: “Син мій єси, я сьогодні породив тебе.” Як і на іншому місці каже: “Ти - священик навіки за чином Мелхиседека.”

Молімося за хворих, знедолених бідних, за переселенців,

за голодних та за всіх, хто в будь-який спосіб терпить!

В неділю З1-го березня до нашої церкви завітають сестри Василіянки і під час сніданку у нашій залі виголосять цікаву доповідь. Сестри Василіянки з України просять допомогти у віднові Святовоздвиженського монастиря в с. Словіта на Львівщині, конфіскованого радянською владою. До недавна приміщення монастиря використовувалось для лікування хворих на туберкульоз. Монастир у Словіті є колискою їхньої історії і тут вони планують створити будинок гідного догляду за людьми похилого віку, ця сфера соціального служіння в Україні, на жаль, опущена, а потреба велика. Вони будуть вдячні Вам, якщо Ви зробите свій внесок для продовження реконструкції монастиря та створення при ньому будинку для людей похилого віку.

Оn Sunday, March 31st we will be hosting the sisters of St. Basil from Ukraine who will deliver a talk during our morning breakfast in the church hall. The Sisters will come with an appeal for help to restore the Holy Cross Convent in Slovita, of the Lviv region, which was confiscated by the Soviet government. Until quite recently the premises of the convent were used as a tuberculosis dispensary. The Slovita convent is the cradle of the history of these sisters and they intend to establish an institution for elderly people, since this area of social services is, unfortunately, neglected in Ukraine, where needs for the elderly are great. They would appreciate your contribution for the reconstruction of the convent and the establishment of a nursing home.

ПАПИ ФРАНЦИСКА ПОРАДИ НА ПІСТ (з його численних проповідей)

1. Піст нам допомагає отже ми відкидаємо старі звички та ліниву залежність від зла які обманюють і затьмарюють нас. 2. Відмовте собі у чомусь – піст це є час самовідречення; ми повинні себе спитатися, що можна собі відмовити, щоб допомогти та збагатити когось нашою вбогістю. 3. Не будьте байдужими. Ми повинні почути голос пророків, які кричать до нас і турбують наше сумління. Думайте про інших. 4. Моліться: Господи, нехай наші серця будуть такі, як Твоє! Таким чином будемо мати міцне, милосердне, уважне і щедре серце, яке не є байдуже. 5. Приймайте участь в святих тайнах. Ми уподібнюємося до того, що ми отримуємо. 6. Молитва. Великий піст - це час більш інтенсивної, більш тривалої і старанної молитви. Ми повинні благати Бога за тих хто бідний і страждає у світі. 7. Піст має значення, якщо він допомагає приборкати нашу самовпевненість, якщо піст приносить якусь користь іншим, якщо він допомагає нам стати таким як добрий самарянин, що нахиляється над людиною і допомагає їй. 8. Давання милостині допомагає нам досвідчити любов, яка у свою чергу веде до свободи від потреби мати речі, свободи від страху втратити те, що маємо, свободи від жадібності. 9. Допомога бідним - в бідних та покинутих бачимо лице Ісуса; коли любимо і допомагаємо бідним ми любимо і служимо Христові. Ми мусимо спрямувати своє сумління до справедливості, рівності, простоти з іншими.

LENTEN ADVICE FROM POPE FRANCIS (from his many sermons)

1. We all need to improve, to change for the better. Lent helps us to leave behind old habits and the lazy addiction to the evil that deceives and ensnares us. 2. Deny yourself something – Lent is a fitting time for self-denial; we should ask ourselves what we can give up in order to help and enrich others through our own poverty. 3. Don’t remain indifferent – We need to hear the voice of the prophets who cry out and burden our conscience. Think of others! 4. Pray: Lord, make our hearts like Yours! – In this way, our hearts will be strong and merciful, attentive and generous, rather than hearts which are closed or indifferent. 5. Take part in the sacraments – We become what we receive. 6. Prayer – Lent is a time of more intense, more prolonged and more assiduous prayer. We should intercede before God for the many instances of poverty and suffering in the world. 7. Fasting – Fasting makes sense if it questions our security, if it benefits others, and if it helps us to cultivate the style of the Good Samaritan, who reaches out to his brother in need and takes care of him. 8. Almsgiving – Almsgiving helps us to experience charity, which leads to freedom from the need to have things, freedom from the fear of losing what we have, and freedom from the sadness of one who does not wish to share his wealth with others.” 9. Help the Poor – We see Christ’s face in the poor and the outcast; by loving and helping the poor, we love and serve Christ. We need to turn our consciences to justice, equality, simplicity and sharing.

Євангеліє: Від Марка 8:34-9:1 Сказав Господь: “Коли хтось хоче йти за мною, хай зречеться себе самого, візьме на себе хрест свій і йде слідом за мною. Бо хто хоче спасти свою душу, той її погубить; а хто погубить свою душу мене ради та Євангелії, той її спасе. Бо яка користь людині здобути світ увесь, а занапастити свою душу? Що бо людина може дати взамін за власну душу? Sanctified temple, spiritual paradise, boast of virgins, God took flesh from you and became a child; He was God before the ages.
