I Just Wanna Live My Life, il tormentone di Winnie Khumalo gracchia dall’autoradio, mentre il cielo si fa scuro. È tutto un fischiare e un battere di mani, quando facciamo rotta su Orange Farm, misera township di Johannesburg, Sudafrica.

Una frenata brusca, uno stridio delle gomme, e sono tutti giù dall’auto per ballare in mezzo a una strada trafficata. Dita che schioccano. Piedi che battono il tempo sulla polvere. Il ritmo è pazzesco, complicato dalle grida e i battimani di una folla spontanea. La performance finisce, in modo sbrigativo com’era cominciata, e si riparte fra fischi e boati, sgommate, freni a mano e inversioni a U. «Cioè, voi ballate sempre?». «È tutta la nostra vita». «Beh, fate una bella vita».«Ce la mettiamo tutta».

Il pantsula è nato nelle township più violente, nel sottobosco delle gang, quando nei bar la gente era a corto di divertimenti, e figure come Al Capone erano un mito. Questo stile di danza finì per essere associato a una certa categoria di piantagrane: ragazzi annoiati dai toni aggressivi, nel modo di parlare, di muoversi e ballare. Qualcuno cominciò persino a incollare plastica alla suola delle sue Converse per far risuonare i passi in modo più minaccioso.


I Just Wanna Live My Life, the popular song by Winnie Khumaloscratches out of the car radio as the sky darkens. It’s all hands tapping to the beat and whistling while the car heads to Orange Farm, an impoverished township of Johannesburg, South Africa.

The brake is pushed abruptly and tyres screech as they jump from the car and start dancing in the middle of a busy main road. Feet thumping off the dusty ground, fingers snapping, the dance demands they keep pace with an incredible rhythm, complicated by the clapping and shouting of a spontaneous crowd. As fast as it started, it's over and we’re off among more whistles, boos, accelerations, handbrakes, U-turns. 'So you guys are forever dancing?''This is our life.''Then you live nice lives.''We try, we try.'

Pantsula originated in a gangland world of violent townships, back in the days when people sat in taverns starved of entertainment and figures like Al Capone were a source of inspiration. Pantsula became associated with a class of troublemakers: bored youths who defined themselves with aggressive ways of walking, talking, and dancing. Some stuck plastic to the soles of their Converse All Stars to make their footsteps sound more threatening.

Mancane, Twinkles, Bhanzela, Jokes e Pele hanno cominciatoa ballare da bambini. E questo grazie a Sello – o Zillo, come lo chiamano tutti. Quando fondò il gruppo, dieci anni fa, Zillo voleva «trasmettere un messaggio, in modo non verbale». E, per trasmettere questo messaggio, chiamò il gruppo Real Action. L’idea era di fornire un contributo positivo alla comunità, di tenere i giovani lontani dalla microcriminalità offrendo un’alternativa alla noia: la possibilità di distinguersi. «La danza porta speranza» spiega Twinkles. «Bisogna pensare in grande». Per lui il passato è fatto di ricordi dolceamari. «La mia carriera di criminale non è andata oltre il furto di zucchero. Ma arriva un momento in cui sei abbastanza grande per capire che anche rubacchiare lo zucchero è sbagliato. C’è chi lavora per quei soldi».

Oggi si guadagnano tutti da vivere ballando e, quando nonsono impegnati nelle prove o in uno spettacolo, insegnano gratis il pantsula ai bambini. «Questo lavoro ci dà altro, oltre al denaro. Viviamo di ciò che amiamo» dice Pele.

Secondo Zillo «Nelle township ci sono dei talenti nati. Il pantsula è una danza tutta sudafricana. Non esiste da nessun’altra parte». E le cose si muovono in fretta: i Real Action stanno comincian- do a portare questa danza fuori dalle township, in America e in Cina. Quando li abbiamo scoperti su YouTube, avevano 37 visualizzazioni. Quando ci siamo incontrati, stavano facendo le prove per la cerimonia di chiusura dei Mondiali di calcio 2010.

Dal sedile posteriore, Twinkles pontifica: «Se hai successo nella vita, devi sapere come ci sei arrivato e non dimenticare mai gli errori del passato; anzi, devi tornare indietro a risolverli». Gli altri cazzeggiano, scherzano, fanno casino. Senza dir nulla che abbia veramente senso._

Mancane, Twinkles, Bhanzela, Jokes and Pele started dancing as kids. It is Sello – or Zillo, as everybody calls him – that gave them a chance. When he founded the group ten years ago, Zillo says he 'wanted to prove a point, in a non-verbal way.' To prove his point, he named the group Real Action. The idea was to give a positive contribution to the community, to keep youths out of petty crime and offer an alternative to boredom – a chance to excel. 'There is hope through dance', says Twinkles. 'You have to think big.' For him, looking back is bittersweet: 'My criminal involvement goes as far as stealing sugar. But there comes a point where you’re old enough to realize that even stealing sugar is wrong. Somebody works for that money.'

Today they all make a living out of dancing, and when they are not busy rehearsing or performing, they teach kids how to dance pantsula for free. 'Besides the money, we get other things from this job. We gain from what we love', says Pele.

Zillo believes 'the townships have natural talent'. 'Pantsula is such a South African dance. It doesn’t exist any-where else on earth.' Things are moving fast: Real Action have begun taking their dance out of the townships to America and China. When we found them on YouTube, they had 37 views. When we met them, they were preparing a performance at the 2010 World Cup closing ceremony.

In the back of the car, Twinkles reflects: 'If you succeed in life, you need to know how you got there and never forget your past mistakes; in fact you must go back and fix them.' The others are fooling around, joking, making noise – saying nothing that really means anything –._
