  • SAINT ANASTASIA HAITI SUPPORT GROUP (SAHSG) UPDATE & GREETINGS

SAHSG has been meeting regularly using the virtual app Zoom to discuss details about our Fundraising Ministry dur-ing this COVID-19 pandemic. After careful consideration, we agreed to postpone our 10th Annual Dinner Dance to November 2021. The monies from the SAHSG Annual Fundraiser are shared with three organizations in Haiti (SAKALA, THE CARDI-NAL STEPINAC ORPHANAGE, and LAMP FOR HAITI) that support the youth and people of Haiti in the im-poverished and most downtrodden districts. Our group is deeply thankful for your continued support and we want-ed to share with you some stories of what is going on with the children in Haiti. Nancy Young, one of the board members of SAKALA, has provided us with a wonderful newsletter describing how the children at SAKALA are helping their community by making and providing masks during this pandemic. Below is an excerpt: The name SAKALA is both an acronym and a word in itself. As an acronym, it stands for the Haitian Creole words “Community Center for Peaceful Alternatives.” This stems from the SAKALA community center’s founding mission to provide youths in Cité Soleil – through sports, education, agriculture, and entrepre-neurialism -- peaceful alternatives to a life of violence in the neighborhoods. As a Haitian Creole word, SAKALA roughly translates in English to “Accepted, approved by the community.” At the heart of SAKALA, always, is a community. So it is not surprising that as Haiti faces the Covid-19 pandemic, SAKALA is thinking community first. This time by sewing masks and distributing them in the neighborhoods of Cité Soleil. So far, sickness from the Covid-19 virus has not hit Haiti too hard, and we’re hoping the predictions that that will change for the worse in the next two to three weeks turn out to be wrong. Economic fall-out from the pandemic has already com-pounded the political and economic instability Haiti has suffered – particularly in the last two years. Everything from food shortages to the Haitian currency plummeting in value have plagued the country. And, now, the corona-virus. Since mid-March the Haitian government has locked down the country to reduce the spread -- closing the airports and schools, banning large gatherings, and, as of May 11, wearing a Mask when in public is now a matter of law. Haitians especially struggle with the lockdown because, for most, earning enough money to buy food and other necessities is a day-to-day thing. Most just don’t have the money to store up a week or two of food. And, even if it is the law to wear a mask that does not mean that you have the money to afford a good one. So that is why SAKALA is making masks for the people in the surrounding neighborhoods of Cité Soleil, one of the most economically impoverished communities in Hai-ti. Also one of the strongest I will add as someone who loves the community of Cité Soleil. .

In this effort to help, SAKALA has been helped itself by partnerships near and far. SAKALA has not just been making masks, it has also received them. Early on dur-ing the pandemic lockdown in Haiti we received a donation of several dozen washable and re-usable masks for our staff and beneficiaries to use. This meant that we could continue some of SAKALA’s fun and educational activities while still respecting social distancing guidelines. This is a perfect phrase to start teaching a few words of this beautiful language (Mèsi anpil, Mèsi anpil means “Thanks very much” in Haitian Creole. I don’t speak it well – and I am grateful for my Haitian friends’ patience with me for this -- but it is the language of my heart. Wishing you much peace, happiness, and health wher-ever you are in this great community called the world. Donations are very much appreciated and checks can be made to: SAHSG (SAINT ANASTASIA HAITI SUPPORT GROUP) and mailed to SAHSG C/O Saint Anastasia Church, 1095 Teaneck Road, Teaneck, NJ - 07666 Stay Safe and Thank you again in advance for your continued support.

Volunteer Opportunity We are always welcoming new volunteers to help in both Hackensack and Englewood. Board President Paul Shack-ford has taken on the job of scheduling each week’s volun-teers. Physical distancing and masks are enforced. Safety is our first consideration. 400 meals per day are being distributed in Englewood in partnership with World Central Kitchen. On Fridays we also distribute boxes of fresh produce and dairy. This initiative began in April. Englewood is all outdoors with tents and is at St Cecilia’s Church, 55 West Demarest Ave. The Walk-In Dinner in Hackensack requires about 45 minutes inside to pack up donated meals and the rest is out-doors. Some volunteers are being trained to deliver meals (never alone) to the motels where shelter residents have been moved. Others stay back and distribute at the loading dock. Everyone helps pack the meals. (Location is the Hous-ing Health and Human Services Center, 120 South River Street). VOLUNTEERS MUST BE SCHEDULED IN ADVANCE. Both involve at least two hours of standing. Some lifting in Englewood. The commitment in Hackensack is 3:30-6pm and we are there seven days a week. The commitment in Englewood is 12-2pm Monday through Friday only. Volunteers MUST be over 18 years of age. Anyone with underlying health conditions or compromised health is respectfully asked not to volunteer. Anyone interested can send an email to Paul ([email protected]) and he will add you to the list. Volunteers are scheduled each week for the following week in both locations. He will want to know: -Email and cell phone number -Where you would like to volunteer? -How many days? Thanks in advance for your wiliness to help us feed those in need in our communities.

  • Dear Friends, As we enter into the last full week of August and come close to Lady Day we are reminded of all things waiting for us. Despite the reality and restrictions that Covid 19 places on us, children will go back, school, the weather will start getting a little cooler and I assume Starbucks and Dunkin Donuts will resume their pumpkin Latte’s. Last weekend we had a very impressive showing of people in our church. Our mass attendance is growing. Of course I’m very happy about that but even more happy that you know how seriously we are taking your safety into account and that you feel comfortable. Since there is no end in sight to anything changing regarding how we celebrate Sunday Eucharist I’d like to give a quick refresher to those who are recent returnees. + Please arrive early for mass so that you can be counted and have your temperature taken. +Please sit where you see the blue X’s. X marks the spot as they say. Family members who live together under the same roof may be seated more closely together. +Since our ushers will not be going through the benches to take up the collection we are asking our parishioners to contribute through the mail or by the baskets near the elevator and in front of the altar. As the priest is preparing the bread and wine for Mass please feel free to come forward to drop your donation in the basket in front of the altar. BUT please notice the caution lines leading up to the church and maintain a safe social distance with others approaching the altar. +During the consecration of the Mass please be mindful of social distancing if you’re kneeling on the bench in front of you but someone is sitting right in front of you. +In order to prevent face to face communication the priest will say the body of the Christ just once and the congregation will respond “Amen” collectively. Holy communion reception is on the hand till further notice. I suggest that you use a squirt of hand sanitizer before receiving holy communion but not so much that your hands are very wet. Please place one hand over the other forming a throne to receive the King of Kings. As the priests and deacons approach you for Holy Communion please lift up your kneelers to make sure we don’t trip. +Please make sure you come to Mass with your own Clorox wipes or other disinfectant appropriate cleaning wipes and clean and sanitize every area you have been; seat, wood on bench in front of you, kneeler, rest room, door knobs, hand railings, etc…. After you depart there is a second cleaning of the church with hospital grade sanitizer done by one of our staff or volunteers. Thanks so much for your help with all this. Peace, blessings and fraternal regards, Rev. Joseph A. D'Amico

Paz, bendiciones y saludos fraternos, Rev. Joseph A. D'Amico
