Gospel & Spiritual

guerra civile, i neri d¶America erano
circa 4,5 milioni di persone,
considerati alla stregua di servi senza
alcun diritto.

Nobody knows, but Jesus
Carlo Mazzarella)

Joshua fit the battle of Jericho And the walls came tumbling down.
You may talk about the King of Gedeon,You may talk about the man of Saul,There¶s none like good old Joshua
At the battle of Jericho.
Right up the walls of JerichoHe marched with spear in hand:
³Go blow that ram¶s horn´ Joshua cried,³Cause the battle is in my hand´.
Then the lamb, ram, sheep hornsbegan to blow,
And the trumpet began to sound,Joshua commanded the children to shout
And the walls came tumbling down

SHADRACKWell there were three children in the land of Israel
Shadrack, Mishach, Abendigo. They took a little trip into the land of Babylon.
Well old Nabucodonosor was the king of Babylon
Well they took a lot of gold and they made him an idolWell they told everybody when they heard the music of the
cornet (oh yeah)
And they told everybody when they heard the music of the fluteWell they told everybody when they heard the music of the horn (oh yeah)
Great God says you gotta bow down and worship the idol.Well the children of Israel would not bow down
You couldn·t fool them with a golden idol
I said you coldn·t fool them with a golden idol
So the king put the children in the fiery furnace
He heaped on coal and red hot brimstone
Made it seven times hotter, hotter than it ought to be
It even burned up the soldiers the king had put there
Well Shadrack
Then the Lord God sent them an angel
And he gave him a couple of wings
So he would go down into the fiery furnace
And begin to cool the flames
Those children they were so happy
They went strutting trough the fire
Just laughing and singing about the power of the Gospel
That old Nabucodonosor said Hey, nowµ
When he saw the power of the Lord´A happy time in the the land of Babylonµ
C·erano tre fanciulli nella terra d·Israele:
Shadrack, Mishach e Abendigo.
fece ammucchiare carbone e zolfo rovente,

Blind Barnabas(BARNABA IL CIECO)
Well it was blind Barnabus
Stood on the way, blind Barnabus
Stood on the way, that old blind Barnabus
Stood on the way crying oh Lord have mercy on me.
In my God·s bible in the book of James,
Christ was healing and the cripple lane
Giving the poor and needy bread
Healing the sick and raising the dead
They tell when he passed through the Galilea
He passed near a man who couldn·t see
The man was blind and cripple from birth
They tell that his name was blind Barnanus
Oh well old blind Barnabus«
When Barnanus heard that the Lord is neigh
He fell on his knees and began to cry
Oh thy Son of Galilea Pray up to God, have mercy on me.
Crying Oh Lord, Son of David Oh Lord, Son of ManOh Lord, Mary·s baby My good Lord, it·s the bleeding lamb
Oh lord, Son of David My good Lord, it·s the bleeding lamb.
Well the tender Christ stopped
And he looked around
Saw blind Barnabus on the ground
He touched the eyes with the palm of his handsAnd Barnabus saw like a natural man.
Crying old blind Barnanus«
Sfamava i poveri e i bisognosi
cadde in ginocchio e cominciò a gridare
Oh Signore, figlio dell·uomo. Oh Signore, figlio di MariaMio buon Signore, agnello sanguinanteOh Signore, figlio di David
Mio buon Signore, agnello sanguinante

The Jesus revolution

Il film Godspell è ambientato a New Jork: Central Park diventa comeuna nuova Galilea.

To everything - turn, turn, turnThere is a season - turn, turn, turn
And a time for every purpose under heaven
A time to be born, a time to die A time to plant, a time to reap
A time to kill, a time to heal A time to laugh, a time to weep
To everything - turn, turn, turn «
A time to build up, a time to break down A time to dance, a time to mourn
A time to cast away stones A time to gather stones together
To everything - turn, turn, turn «
A time of war, a time of peace A time of love, a time of hate
A time you may embrace A time to refrain from embracing
To everything - turn, turn, turn «
A time to gain, a time to lose A time to rend, a time to sew A time to love, a time to hate
A time of peace, I swear it's not too late!

TURN, TURN, TURN (1966)
Anche nelle tradizioni musicali successive si
ritrovano significative tracce del testo
biblico, benché in numero più ridotto. Nel
mondo protestante americano, specialmente
comune.

Rivers of Babylon(FIUMI DI BABILONIA)
By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat downye-eah we wept, when we remembered Zion.By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat downye-eah we wept, when we remembered Zion.
When the wickedCarried us away in captivityRequired from us a songNow how shall we sing the Lord's song in a strangeland
Let the words of our mouth
and the meditations of our heart
be acceptable in thy sight here tonight
cantare;
come potevamo cantare un canto del Signore in
terra straniera?

the lake a lady's mirror,we stopped to drink some wine. Then he threw the bottle over.Broke a minute later and he put his hand on mine.Thought I saw an eaglebut it might have been a vulture,I never could decide. Then my father built an altar,he looked once behind his shoulder,he knew I would not hide.

Highway 61 Revisited(1965)
³Mi stai prendendo in giro´. Dio Disse ³No´.
Oh God said to Abraham, ³Kill me a son´ Abe says, ³Man, you must be puttin¶ me on´

W hat's hi s colour I don't care, he's my brother let us l i ve i n peace") sembrascagliarsi contro l'intolleranza.

Leadbelly

Leadbelly
Verosimilmente è una variante del brano tradizionale ³Never said a mumblin¶ word´.

U n g ior no, quando ero perso,

del NT, in brani come God i s i n the house, Oh my Lord e Hallelujah.
³ Attraverso d i noi Di o trova la sua voce, perché come noi abbi amo bi sogno d i Di o, Egl i a sua volta habi sogno d i noi . The good son (1990)
One more man goneThe good son walks into the fieldHe is a tiller, he has a tiller's handsBut down in his heart now
He lays down his queer plans Against his brother and against his familyYet he worships his brother And he worships his mother But his father, he says, is an unfair manThe good sonThe good son has sat and often weptBeneath a malign star by which he's kept And the night-time in which he's wrapped
Speaks of good and speaks of evil And he calls to his mother And he calls to his father But they are deaf in the shadows of his brother's truancyThe good son And he curses his mother And he curses his father And he curses his virtue like an unclean thingThe good son
One more man gone
