E 2 · Centro Caprense Ignazio Cerio

Moral institution for Island knowledge and culture,

established by the Cerio family, which over the generations

has written pages on local life, history and art. It is located

in the historical nucleus of the “Casa Grandi”, which are

stern, fourteenth-century buildings near the Piazzetta.

Palazzo Arcucci is the most ancient and holds the

naturalistic-archaeological Museum with a concert and

lecture hall with its wonderful cross vaults. There is a Library

in Palazzo Ferrace with an outstanding range of

documentation on all aspects of Capri.

E 2 · Capri · The Giardini di Augusto and Via Krupp

You can reach the Giardini di Augusto in a few minutes from

the Piazzetta. Once there you will enjoy spectacular views

over the Faraglioni and Marina Piccola and up towards Monte

Tuoro and Cesina. This part of the island was once known as

Fondo Certosa, and was later acquired by the German

industrialist Friedrich Alfred Krupp. Just beyond is the path

that bears his name, Via Krupp, which he built in 1902. It winds

its way down to Marina Piccola, and shows, in the words of the

historian Roberto Pane that “even a path can be a work of art”.

Route: From the Piazzetta take Via V.Emanuele and then Via

F. Serena. Turn right at the bottom.

A 1 · Villa Imperiale di Damecuta

This is the site of yet another large Roman villa, with service

areas, cisterns and quarters for servants and the imperial

retinue dotted in the grounds. The imperial residence perched

panoramically on the brink of the cliff of the plateau,

reminiscent of the formal reception areas of Villa Jovis, both

semicircular in shape with a long ambulatio leading to the

emperor's private quarters. The villa could once be reached

from the jetty at Gradelle via Villa di Gradola above the Blue

Grotto. In medieval times, a watchtower was added to warn

of Saracen incursions. Amedeo Maiuri's archaeological digs,

initiated in 1937, restored the site to its present condition.

Route: Take the Grotta Azzurra bus from Anacapri and get

off at the Damecuta stop (10 minutes) or walk down along

the road that leads to the Blue Grotto (30 minutes).

Anacapri Viale Amedeo Maiuri tel. +39 081 8374549

Opening times 9.00 · to an hour before sunset

D 1 · Axel Munthe's Villa San Michele

It stands proud on the cliff at the top of the Scala Fenicia. It

derives from one man's dream: Axel Munthe, travelling here

in his youth in 1876, noticed a peasant cottage and the ruins

of the chapel of San Michele on this spot, and made it his

"place of soul". Many years went by before he was able to buy

it and restore it. Today, a large terraced garden with colonnades

and loggias link the house with the renovated chapel. It houses

archaeological items of local interest, artworks, an enigmatic

sphinx and what remains of a cubiculum. It is now the property

of the Swedish State. This villa-museum is open to visitors every

day and you can also enjoy summer concerts.

Route: Walk along Viale Axel Munthe from Piazza Vittoria in

Anacapri (5 minutes).

G 2 · Capri · Arco Naturale · Grotta di Matermania ·

Pizzolungo · Tragara

This walk will take you along the most beautifully sculpted

coast of the island, with its precipitous cliffs, its

disembowelled grottos and its dramatic rocky peaks. Some

of Doré's illustrations for the Divine Comedy were inspired

by this landscape. Malaparte's Casa come me and Edwin

Cerio's Casa la Solitaria cling to these rocks. You emerge

from the old medieval settlement and walk up to Pian delle

Noci with its spectacular belvedere. Then Via Matermania

takes you back down and to the Arco Naturale, what remains

of a huge ancient grotto. A long series of steps leads down

to Grotta di Matermania, once a Roman nymphaeum. From

there Via Pizzolungo takes you through innumerable

botanical rarities before the path opens out over the

Faraglioni and then leads on to Tragara, and Via Tragara,

with its elegant villas and their gardens, takes you back to

the heart of Capri. Route: On foot, from the Piazzetta, take

Via Le Botteghe up to Quadrivio della Croce, and then Via

Matermania (90 minutes).

C· D 2 · Anacapri · Monte Solaro · Cetrella

The imposing summit of Monte Solaro offers, at 589 metres,

spectacular views over the whole island, the Bay of Naples,

the Bay of Salerno and out towards Ischia. A chairlift will

take you to the summit, or you can walk up the mountain.

Coming back down on foot is easier, though it will still take

you about an hour or so, and longer if you take the detour

to the hermitage of Cetrella, which we recommend. It dates

back to the 14th century and was founded by Carthusian

monks. There is poetry in the harmonious interplay of its

vaults and in its splendid isolation. Its name apparently

derives from the aromatic erba cetra (melissa); the mountain

is a treasure trove of important botanical rarities. Before you

get to the hermitage, you will come across what was once

the house of the Scottish writer Compton Mackenzie. It has

recently been restored by the Amici di Cetrella and is now a

centre for the study of local flora and fauna, with a library

and a garden containing a small collection of local species

(opening times variable +39 081 837 1157 to check).

Route: Take the chairlift from Piazza Vittoria in Anacapri (12

minutes), or walk up the mountain (60 minutes) using Via

Capodimonte, Via Monte Solaro and then following the path.

C1 · Chiesa di San Michele

The church is most famous for its splendid majolica floor

covering the whole area under the octagonal dome and the

nave. The Neapolitan artist Leonardo Chiaiese created this

masterpiece in 1761. The floor is left clear of pews so that

the scene of the expulsion of Adam and Eve from the Garden

of Eden can be appreciated in all its detail: the flowers, the

plants and the animals, including mythical ones such as a

unicorn. The altars are also worthy of attention: the lapislazuli

of the High Altar, and the wooden side altars painted to

imitate marble.

Route: Walk from Piazza Vittoria in Anacapri down the

pedestrian street, Via G. Orlandi, then turn right down to

Piazza San Nicola (5 minutes). +39 081 837 2396

Opening times November · March 9.30 ·15.00

April · October 9.00 · 19.00

A 1·2·3 · Anacapri · Sentiero dei Fortini

This long walk linking the island's defensive emplacements

(fortini) along its western coastline is to be appreciated for

its natural beauty, its art and the historical insights it offers.

It wanders through an extraordinary wild landscape carved

by the wind and the sea. The defensive emplacements of

Orrico, Mesola and Pino perch on three of its promontories,

linked by a winding trail with spectacular views that goes

from Punta dell'Arcera near the Blue Grotto to the lighthouse

(faro) at Punta Carena. The trail meanders through flora

that is found only here and in a few other places, clinging

to the rocks and the cliffs, then descends to the cobalt blue

waters only to turn back up again into the Mediterranean

scrub. Scuba divers know good places here from which to

embark on their encounters with the deep blue underwater

world. When the trail was restored in 1998, on the initiative

of the Local Tourist Authority, ceramic tiles, the work of the

artist Sergio Rubino, were strategically placed along the

route to illustrate the area's nature and history, creating

the world's first open air ecomuseum.

Route: Take a bus from Anacapri to Faro or Grotta Azzurra

(10 mins), then 4 to 5 hours on foot, and a bus back up to

Anacapri.

E 2 · Certosa di San Giacomo

The interplay of the lines of its vaults is enchanting. The

warm colour of its lapillo surfaces is delightful. This is the

highest expression of monastic life. It is thought to have

risen up from the ruins of an imperial Roman villa, six of

whose columns have been reused in the construction of

the smaller cloister. It was built between 1363 and 1374

under the auspices of Count Giacomo Arcucci and Queen

Giovanna I d’Angiò. The oldest parts consist of the church,

the smaller cloister, the refectory and service areas which

included a herbal pharmacy. 16th century Saracen

incursions prompted reconstruction and enlargement: the

main cloister, a watchtower, the prior’s quarters and the

clock tower. The unusual cusping of the stone echoes the

wrought-iron motifs of traditional Capri wells.

Route: Walk from the Piazzetta down Via Emanuele, then

G 1 · Villa Jovis Emperor Tiberius designed this, his main

villa, as palace, fortress and barracks, on a precipice at the

top of a cliff 334 metres above sea level. It was excavated

by Amedeo Maiuri between 1932 and 1935. The architecture

emphasizes the spectacular natural scenery, with steps

rising level after level up to the emperor's private quarters.

The view from the ambulatio of the imperial loggia

dominates the whole Bay of Naples. Four large cisterns

are at the heart of the structure and around them you

find the formal reception area, the thermal baths, the

living quarters and the kitchens, with outlying gardens

and woods with nymphaeums and exedras. From 27 AD

to 37 AD, Tiberius ruled the Roman Empire from here. The

fleet maintained communications with Rome, and the

lighthouse was used to send signals across the water.

Route: Walk from the Piazzetta along Via Le Botteghe,

then Via Fuorlovado, Via Croce and Via Tiberio (40 minutes).

C 1 · Casa Rossa

The house owes its name to the red colour of its walls,

chosen by Colonel J. C. Mackowen, an American, who built

it between 1876 and 1899 around Torre Aragonese, a 16th

century stone fort. According to local tradition, the menfolk

of Anacapri used to lock their women away in the fort when

they went to work across the water at the Arsenale di Napoli.

The somewhat eclectic style of the building includes

archaeological items found at Gradola. It currently houses

a permanent exhibition of paintings depicting views of the

island from the 19th and 20th centuries.

Route: On foot from Piazza Vittoria in Anacapri (5 minutes).

B 1 · The Blue Grotto

The most famous of the grottos, inexorably linked to the

Blue Island in name and in fame. The complex interplay

of sunlight and water casts refracted blue light onto the

walls and the vault, and opalescent reflections from the

bed of white sand give a silvery sheen to anyone swimming

in its waters. It may have been a sacred place in ancient

times, and was certainly a Roman nymphaeum: two statues

found in the grotto are now in the National Museum of

Naples. It was feared by fishermen in times past, when it

was known as Grotta Gradola and reputed to be haunted.

Its rediscovery in 1826 by the German painters August

Kopisch and Ernst Fries, assisted by the local fisherman

known as 'o Riccio, and its subsequent rechristening as

the Blue Grotto, marked the onset of the island's tourist

era. Route: You can catch a boat to the Blue Grotto from

the harbour, Marina Grande, between 9am and an hour

before sunset. Then small rowing boats will take you into

the grotto. From Anacapri, you can reach the Blue Grotto

on foot (50 minutes) along Via Pagliaro, Via Tuoro and

Via Grotta Azzurra, by taxi (10 minutes) or by bus (15

minutes).
