    Cinematography Log Book

One aspect of the style that will be used within this project is the use of

natural light and how it relates to the mood of the overall scene.

The photograph below was taken with the camera pointing in the same direction as the suns rays,

and with a relatively low F-stop (F/5) with focal length at 9mm gave this strange haze of light and a

strange noticeable shape of light that draws ones eye in the photograph.

The coloured shape of light on the grass made by the settings and position of the camera when

taken gives an unusual and unnatural element (aka the diamond/rectangle like light blue shape in

the centre foreground) that is created with the use of natural light from the sun and relatively low

    exposure level of 1/160seconds.

Experimenting with the exposure on the Finepix Fujifilm s5800 camera with the picture on the

left shown above was set at a low exposure time of 1/160sec that makes the photograph look

like a nuclear bomb just went off.

With no clouds in the sky and moderately saturated in light give this day dreamy effect

although compared to the photograph on the right which is the same shot just at a much higherexposure time of 1/1000seconds makes it slightly darker as well as bringing the clouds which

are hidden because the exposure is at a low point in the opposite photograph.

The photograph on the above left is much brighter that the photograph on the right mostly

because the exposure time is very low at (1/100 of a second) even though they where taken

only less than a minute apart and the ISO AT 200 making it a lot lighter than the photograph

    on the right.

Once again showing little clouds and when looking at the second picture on the right of the

sunset with the ISO at 64 making the scene seem slightly darker than it is.

The lamps light up make it look more realistic to the overall scene as it gets darker into the

background makes the lamp at the back seem the brightest from the darkened trees although

the lamp in the foreground is not completely illuminated yet and in line with the other two

lamps behind it each one lighter than the other gives a nice touch to the photograph.

With the reverse affect happening with the sunset as it contrasts with the clouds being lighter

from the back and darker merging with the clouds in the foreground.

While at the same time the brightness contrasted of the sky links to the lamps as they also go

from light in the background to more dull in the foreground.

Peculiarly at the same time this photograph on the right above also consists of the reverse of

light as the top of the trees being the separation point from the sky where it gets darker fromthe foreground the other part from the trees to the is where its most dark and gradually gets

lighter onto the road to the foreground.

The run sequences are inspired by the camera positions used in the Silent Hill Movie. One

particular scene is the Silent Hill School run sequence thatuses a lot of Track Pann and Zoom

camera techniques that is one of the main elements that is building the suspense in that

    sequence.

Implementing these similar techniques used in the Silent Hill Movie as they relate to the type of

genre and mood to create for the final footage.

Where the lady below is shaded in shadow by the lighting in the hall as she runs down, this similar method

was achieved through the use of the zoom on Finepix Camera in the File 27.AVI shown on the page below

(Finepix-D) in relation to as shown at the above right snapshot.

Analysis of pre filming test footage and the implemented influences from

    other media material

One disadvantage using the Finepix Camera in Film Mode is that the settings cannot be adjusted as

ts in auto. Making its ability to gain that same pattern affects unattainable, like it is in Manual

Mode fortaking photographs where the settings are more flexible, below is a link to one of the tests

sedwith the Finepix Camera in Film Mode.

    File 27.AVI (Finepix-D) uploded at URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TaLHwJ6duUs

Testing run and walk sequences relating it to something that gives the feeling of suspense or

mystery to the feeling of the footage.

This was tested at different angles, one of which shown above is shot from the foot of the man and

hen tracked and zoomed in as the man runs, then zooming out as he gets more distant to gain fulliew of him, with the use of the zoom going back out at the end gave this nice shallow blur effect

hown in the above right snapshot.

At the end of the File 27.AVI a small effect occurs where the scene changes its shade making it darker

nd makes it seem denser due to the blur caused by the zooming out and with the low resolution of

40x480 pixels that it was shot at gave all the Finepix Camera footage a grainy effect which is

ometimes used in flashbacks or past events/dreams in films.

The light in the back top centre is much more noticeable on the above right snapshot giving this

diffused like affect which draws the viewers eye in and with the test subject (James) in black clothes is

iving an opposing composition of colour to the overall scene. As he gets closer the hall behind him

    ets darker.

Strengths & Weaknesses between the Hitachi DZ-BD7HE Blu-ray/HD

Hybrid Camcorder and the Finepix Camera.

Although the Hitachi DZ-BD7HE BLU-RAY Hybrid Camcorder has much more stability over

manual adjustment while in HD or (BD) Blue-ray/ Standard Digital adjusting Exposure and Focus is accessable

    n all these modes.

Although the FinePix Camera in Film Mode has no manual adjustment over Contrast and Exposure like the Hitachi

z Camcorder, it still makes a equally reasonably good job of the overall contrastof the footage shown on the above

eftcompared to the the footage on the above right.

ven though the Finepix has more grain/noise in its footege shown in the above left than the one on the right it still

uitable to watch, they both have a automatic change on light exposure when zooming in and out which goes well

with the kind of mood and feel to the overall scenes.

Video File 27.AVI (Finepix-D) Video File (test 8) from Hitachi DZ-BD7HE Camcorder

    DSCF5820 (Finepix-D) DSCF5819 (Finepix-D)

    DSCF5818 (Finepix-D)

The two videos above and the one on the left are a part of my

three minute pre filming shots to test the use of the FinePix

Camera in its quality and performance in comparison to the

    Hitachi DZ-BD7HE Camcorder.

The light is partly coming from the lights in the room andnaturally occurring light through the windows contrasting with

the quality of the technical settings of the camera e.g. reslution

and contrast. This gives that moderate washy look to the

footage, manually zooming out makes the contrast of the light

    apparent.

This run scene from the first matrix Movie shown above resembles some similar camera techniques and other attributes that

can also be found in the Silent Hill Run Sequence (see page 3).

25-27 seconds in the Matrix run sequence shown above Neo runs up to the camera in the street then zooms in to a

close up as he gets closer and stops, in comparison to the Silent Hill Scene where the lady runs away from the camera

as it zooms out and she comes to a halt that is a reverse camera use implemented in both films.

Both film footages have the use of pann and zoom and track camera techniques, in the Silent Hill footage there is 4 main

anns that emanate from a pacific side and track to the lady running as she gets closer to the camera and out of shot

hown at 32 to 36 seconds in with the second one at 38 to 41 seconds in, tracking her from above as the other panns are

oming out from ether the left or right side.

1 to 1:03 seconds in the Silent Hill sequence (see page 3) as the camera pannes from the left the lady stops running

making a medium long shot and then starts running to her right too a classroom where the beginning of three panned

hots come into play which consist of three separate rooms all being tracked through continuously and can act as one

    ann.

While in the Matrix scene also had use of roughly the same amount track and pann shots but instead of the camera

utting to a separate scene after the lady runs past shown in the Silent Hill Scene in the Matrix scene the camera

eeps tracking the man as he runs past the camera, using mostly straight tracks instead of tracking from the left or

    ght.

he one noticeable track that comes close to comparison in the Matrix scene is where the camera tracks down from a

otel sign as Mr. Smith comes into shot between 1:50-153 seconds in.

Page 7 contains most of the 3 minute pre-filmed footage from the FinePix Camera with the other 4 on page 5.

working on a run sequence that took place in a corridor using different angles top and bottom to determine best result,

having problems moving the camera as the man runs past trying to keep the camera moving the same past and position

in the first Video above (DSCF5821 FinePix-D).

Footage DSCF5822 (FinePix-D) & DSCF5824 (FinePix-D) work well gaining the hole hallway as the man ran on the

alf way point past the camera, as in 22 his speeds up as he passes the camera while in 24 he slows down, this is so the

amera track stays more in view on the man as he passes.

roving difficult to maintain the shots zoom at the rate as the man is running, also using the light at the top of the hall

ntrance adds a nice touch to the contrast of the footage best displayed in the DSCF5821(FinePix-D) footage as its

oming from a angle zooming out giving a slight alignment at the start.
