À l’approche de la 6e édition du FIDLab, peut-on rapidement jeter un coup d’œil dans le rétroviseur ? Oui : la vue est réjouissante. Sans besoin de remonter trop loin, A Spell to Ward off the Darkness de Ben Russell et Ben Rivers, a ouvert la section Fuori Concorso de la dernière édition du Festival de Locarno. Sacro G.R.A de Gianfranco Rosi, a été consacré Lion d’Or du Festival International de Venise en septembre dernier. Acquis par Doc & Films, le film a été vendu dans plus de 25 pays. Elon Rabin doesn’t believe in death figurait au Marché de coproduction du Festival de Rome. En janvier sortait en France le film du suisse Olivier Zuchuat, Comme des lions en pierre à l’entrée de la nuit. Le Challat de Tunis de la tunisienne Kaouther Ben Hania, après avoir été sélectionné à Dubaï, est présenté cette année à l’ACID à Cannes.

Nous souhaitons au cru 2014 de connaître autant de succès, même si, de l’écriture à la post-production, du lancement d’un projet à sa finalisation, un film connaît une lente gestation.

Cette année encore, les 10 projets, retenus sur 371 projets adressés, dont le point commun est de s’élaborer avec un « microbudget » (moins d’un million d’euros, voire beaucoup moins), nous viennent du monde entier : Algérie, Allemagne, Argentine, Autriche, Belgique, Brésil, Chine, Espagne, France, Royaume-Uni, Uruguay.

Ces deux journées FIDLab vont offrir aux réalisateurs et aux producteurs un espace de travail où l’œuvre est placée au cœur de ces rencontres professionnelles. Des rendez-vous individuels organisés sont précédés de présentations publiques des projets. À la différence d’un marché ou d’une simple tribune de promotion, les porteurs de projets ont loisir de présenter leur projet en adéquation avec son esprit.

Rejoignant Air France, Panavision, La Planète Rouge, Sublimage, Vidéo de Poche, Gomedia, que nous remercions pour leur soutien marqué et continué, deux nouveaux partenaires seront présents cette année : la Fondation Camargo, d’une part, et l’Akademie Schloss Solitude. Nous saluons leur décision d’engagement à nos côtés, toutes deux doteront un prix en industrie sous la forme d’une résidence. Pour l’attribution de ces sept prix, le jury est composé de Nadia Turincev, productrice française chez Rouge International, de Michael Weber, directeur de la société de ventes internationales allemande The Match Factory, Luciano Rigolini, commissioning editor La Lucarne chez Arte France. Nous nous réjouissons de leur présence à tous trois, convaincus que leur expérience professionnelle sera profitable à tous.

As the FIDLab 6th edition is getting close, can we take a quick look at the past? Yes we can and definitely should since the view is joyful. There is no need to go very far in time: A Spell to Ward off the Darkness by Ben Russell and Ben Rivers opened the Fuori Concorso section at the latest edition of the Locarno Festival. Sacro G.R.A by Gianfranco Rosi won the Golden Lion at the Venise Film Festival last September. Purchased by Doc & Films, the film has been sold to more than 25 countries so far. Elon Rabin doesn’t believe in death was at the coproduction Market of the Rome Film Festival. Swiss Director Olivier Zuchuat’s film Comme des lions en pierre à l’entrée de la nuit was released in France in January. After being selected in Dubaï, Le Challat de Tunis directed by the Tunisian filmmaker Kaouther Ben Hania, will be screened at the ACID programme in Cannes.

We wish the best of luck to the 2014 harvest, even tough we are fully aware that every single film goes through a very slow gestation period, from writing to post-production, project launch to its finalisation.

This year’s 10 projects have been selected among 371 projects. All of them aim to be made with a budget of less than a million Euros, sometimes even significantly less. These projects have been sent to us from all over the world: Algeria, Argentina, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, China, France, Germany, Spain, United Kingdom and Uruguay.

These two days at FIDLab will offer both directors and producers a dynamic working space where the film will be placed at the heart of these professional meetings. There will be a public presentation of the projects before the scheduled individual meetings. Unlike a market, or a basic promotional pitch, here the film-makers have ample time to present their project in a way that compliments its mood.

We sincerely wish to thank Air France, Panavision, La Planète Rouge, Sublimage, Vidéo de Poche and Gomedia for their generous and continued support. We want to welcome two new partners joining us this year : The Camargo Foundation and the Akademie Schloss Solitude. We honor their commitment and underline that both organisations will hand out a prize in form of a residence for winning directors.

The seven prizes will be awarded by an international jury, composed by Nadia Turincev, french producer at Rouge International, Michael Weber, International Sales CEO of the German company The Match Factory, Luciano Rigolini, commissioning editor of La Lucarne at Arte France. Their attendance delights us as we know their professional experience will be profitable to all.

Après avoir travaillé pour ACE - Ateliers du Cinéma Européen, Europa Cinemas, le Club des Producteurs Européens, Média Développement (UE), le Comité de sélection de la Quinzaine des Réalisateurs et le Festival de Moscou en tant que directrice artistique, elle monte en juillet 2007 avec Julie Gayet la maison de production Rouge International.After working with ACE - European Film Studio, Europa Cinemas, the European Producers Club, EU Media Development program, selection committee of Cannes’ Directors Fortnight and Moscow IFF, as artistic director, she founded in July 2007 along with Julie Gayet the production company Rouge International.

Michael Weber rejoint le Bavaria Film Group en 1996 dans le département des ventes internationales avant d’être directeur général de Bavaria Media Gmb en 2000. Depuis 2006, il dirige sa propre société de ventes internationales, The Match Factory, fondée avec les producteurs Karl Baumgartner et Reinhard Brundig de Pandora Film. Michael Weber joined the Bavaria Film Group in 1996 in the world sales division before becoming the Managing Director of Bavaria Media Gmb in 2000. Since the beginning of 2006 he manages his own sales company, The Match Factory, founded together with producers Karl Baumgartner and Reinhard Brundig of Pandora Film.

Depuis 1995, il travaille à Paris pour la chaîne culturelle européenne ARTE où il est responsable du documentaire d’auteur, chargé de dénicher de nouvel-les formes narratives et de promouvoir un cinéma de création alternative, atypique et exigeant. Il a également produit les œuvres de réalisateurs comme Chris Marker, Alexander Sokurov, Naomi Kawase, Alain Cavalier, Apichatpong Weerasethakul et a découvert de nombreux jeunes talent.Since 1995 he has been based in Paris as a Commissioning Editor for the European Cultural channel ARTE, where he is in charge of auteur documentary, seeking out new narrative forms and keeping alive independent filmmaking driven by the spirit of innovation and discovery. FOnDATIOn cAMARgOUn septième et nouveau prix sera offert par la Fondation Camargo, lieu de résidence d’artistes, chercheurs et penseurs basé à Cassis, qui accueillera le réalisateur primé entre 4 à 8 semaines. De cette proximité entre l’homme et l’eau, naissent des conflits et des problèmes d’ordre économique, politique, social ou existentiel. Water is life. In physical and in metaphysical terms. Without water we cannot survive. Every day and everywhere we use water. And we live imbedded in its natural circulations. In endless cycles water arises, flows, evaporates, travels with the clouds, rains, drains away and arises again. But water can also threaten and destroy our environment. Through its force, through its excessive quantity and also through the lack of it. In this close relationship between man and water conflicts and problems arise – economical, political, social and existential ones.
