Editorial | Day six
Maurice Pialat once said that it was watching Jean Renoir’s La Bête humaine over and over again in his teens, that made him want to be a
filmmaker. Thinking of Loulou, one could say that in Gérard Depardieu Pialat found his own Jean Gabin. A working-class hero, a roguish charm and unique red-blooded sexuality, an acting style that jettisons all the usual rules and conventions. Pialat appreciated Depardieu’s talent, his intelligence, his naturalness, and also the commanding position he occupies in French cinema, moving with ease from Marguerite Duras to Claude Zidi, from Marco Ferreri to François Truffaut.
Depardieu – Pialat, a great film partnership
It was also Pialat’s ambition to benefit from the largesse of the mainstream production system and audience tastes without sacrificing any of his artistic integrity. He managed to do so thanks in part to Depardieu’s popularity, the latter involved in three of his most popular films: Loulou, Police (a big box-office hit), Sous le soleil de Satan (Palme d’or at Cannes). And Le Garçu, too intimate to attract a wide audience, in which Depardieu and Pialat finally become as one (the actor becomes the director’s on-screen doppelganger). There was mutual admiration between Pialat and Depardieu, but also enormous affection. Thanks to Sylvie Pialat, Maurice Pialat’s widow, the monstre sacré that is Depardieu readily agreed to come to Locarno to salute the memory of an artist, filmmaker and exceptional human being.(Olivier Père)
Il volo nel volo. A sfarinare qualsiasi frontiera.

Why did they work so well together?Maurice needed a leading actor – he was rather lazy, he would wait for things to happen and then shoot them. Sometimes a whole day would pass on the set, and then during the last half hour he would lense six minutes. He did not want actors making visible efforts, it should all be easy-going, and in that way Gérard is perfect – he is the lead, a real giant, who acts like he breathes. They were very close, like two little boys playing in the garden.
After your husband’s death you kept in touch with Depardieu?Oh yes, he is the godfather of my son, Antoine, we live in the same street in Paris and see each other very often. For me he is a tent pole in my life, and I think he is the same for him. He is the only actor who is not an actor in private, he does not talk about himself and his films but about real life. When you write a part for him, you don’t have to explain how to say the lines, they just come out, and always in the right way.Now as a producer with your own company, have you ever worked with Depardieu?Yes, I once signed Gérard for a role in a feature, Bouquet final, about a funeral – at a very friendly price.(Jørn Rossing Jensen)
When did they meet, and did they hit it off right away? When Maurice was about to shoot his third movie, La Gueule ouverte, he wanted Gérard to play the lead; they met, and they immediately became friends, but Gérard went on to make Les Valseuses instead. Then Isabelle Huppert was interested in working with Maurice, who had this project, Loulou; he had Jacques Dutronc in mind for the part, but Huppert had already

made a film with him and suggested Gérard. That was a disaster. On the set they were yelling at each other. ”For a director I would give you four points out of 20,” shouted Gérard, whom Maurice called ”a truck with a moped’s engine.” The film was never fully completed – producer’s problems – and Huppert went to the US for Heaven’s Gate. In spite of the missing scenes, Loulou was selected for Cannes and went well in the cinemas. Gérard never saw it.There must have been a reconciliation of some sort?In 1984 the film was on television, and Gérard liked it; Daniel Toscan du Plantier, the producer, organised a dinner, and it was as if all this had never happened. They simply became the best of friends and since collaborated on Police, Sous le soleil de Satan – which I adapted – and Le Garçu.
With Laurent Achard’s Dernière Séance in Concorso internazionale, French producer Sylvie Pialat is also in Locarno to present the special Depardieu – Pialat programme

A philandering husband leaves his young wife, but cannot manage to detach himself completely, because he loves his five year-old son, always trying to find ways to see him. In 1995 Le Garçu signalled Pialat’s return to the more autobiographical strain in his work, reminiscent of Nous ne vieillirons pas ensemble in this respect. Pialat’s protagonists are now well off, and spend their money ostentatiously, but human relationships are just as conflicted and painful. Paternal hysteria now supplements the search for pleasure, the difficulty of living together. The film
Touching on Real TruthsProgrammi speciali
ends with the death of the « garçu », the father played by Gérard Depardieu, which echoes the mother’s death throes in La Gueule ouverte. The film, almost devoid of any dramatic development, is composed of a succession of scenes from the protagonists’ lives, shot with great sensitivity. This solemn and insightful film, heart-rending at times, was not popular with audiences who doubtless felt such naked honesty was too much. What a mistake. Pialat is not trying to shock, but he does touch on real truths. In filming his own son Antoine, perhaps feeling his own end drawing near (this was to be his last
film), Pialat is, essentially, going back to the origins of cinema, the Lumière brothers.(Olivier Père)

Everything starts with two words written on a blackboard: “Bachir Lazhar”, the name of the new Algerian primary school teacher who hides a painful past and his condition of political refugee to everyone; on the other side of the fence, a class which is embarking on a long healing process after the suicide of Marine, their ex-teacher. A double level of narration which is only apparently balanced, since most part of the scenes take place in the class. “It was intended” claims director Philippe Falardeau, “because there are many movies which offer a political vision on immigration. In my film this situation is part of Bachir’s background but it does not represent a label at the eyes of the children, they don’t have racial prejudices. He is simply a man.” Bachir manages to develop his own way to communicate with the class in spite of their parents’ anxieties, the advices of a psychologist and the limitations given by regulations. “In Canada, some of these rules about avoiding physical contact are crazy. I understand why they exist, but I do not agree. This is why I introduced in the movie a subplot which binds Marine and a child.” Always preserving his shyness and refinement, Bachir transforms his cold and almost aseptic class into a place where trust and solidarity can arise between scholars, exorcizing at the same time his and their personal fears. “Everything” the director continues “is based on the sense of foreignness and otherness that the children feel towards their new teacher and Bachir himself feels towards them.”Adapted from the play written by Éveline de la Chenelière, Philippe Falardeau’s Bachir Lazhar shows the same attitude of its main character through mellow storytelling without particular stresses, a wise cinematography and the great performances of its actors which perfectly and realistically represent the long healing process that permits the class to ride out of the trauma. “I wanted natural lighting for the scenes” Falardeau concludes. “I don’t have children, but I had no problems communicating with kids, because they were old enough to understand the psychology of their characters. And they helped me in making the script and its dialogues more realistic!”(Mattia Bertoldi)

Sylvain, a solitary and taciturn young man, is the projectionist in an ancient local cinema. The venue is soon to close, due to lack of audience, but Sylvain can’t face this reality and continues to keep screening the same film, Jean Renoir’s French Cancan, to a handful of cinéphiles, loyal devotees of the cinema. Sylvain has one other obsession apart from the cinema: by night he murders women in a macabre ritual, haunted by traumatic memories of his mother. Dernière Séance, the third feature film from French director Laurent Achard, signals his return to competition at Locarno where he won the Pardo for mise en scène in 2006 for his previous film Le Dernier des fous, also featuring his favourite actor, Pascal Cervo.
A Magnificent ObsessionLaurent Achard is a fascinating and unusual filmmaker, just like his new film Dernière Séance. It is part of a project to commission French directors to make low budget genre films, based on the old B movie model. In this particular case, we are closer to Bresson rather than pale imitations of recent American hits. Dernière Séance is perhaps a genre film, but only in the way that Psycho could be said to be (Sylvain as a close relative of Norman Bates) or The Shining, i.e. transcended by a far stronger concept than that of the usual horror or thriller film formula: that of mise en scène. Achard is a brilliant stylist, and his film is a love letter to cinema.

Koji, a young photography student, spends his days at the park, taking pictures of unknown people passing by for his portfolio. One day, he’s approached by a man, who asks him to devote his attention to just one subject: a beautiful and mysterious woman and her little daugther on a stroller. He gives no explanation, but he tells Koji that he will update him with her daily walking schedules, which include each different park of Tokyo. The fact that the student has to give up his Reflex
Tokyo Koen: a Walk in the Parkcamera and his black and white film stock for a digital pocket camera – easier to hide, and faster to send the final results to his empolyer – is not lost on the audience of Tokyo Koen, the new film by Shinji Aoyama. Like most features on the other characters and storylines (the photographer’s friend who loves horror pictures, his confused relationship with his step-sister, etc.) there always seems to be some sort of cinematic link. The director himself confessed that, apart from the novel by Yukiya Shoji on which it’s based, the main inspiration for his latest comes from Quatre nuits d’un rêveur by Robert Bresson, which he calls “A simple film of fleeting glances”, a definition that could fit Tokyo Koen as well.(Massimo Benvegnù)

Correspondence There is no doubt that Lisandro Alonso and Albert Serra know one another. They belong to the same generation and rank among those artists who make a passion for contemporary film still possible, and the concept of cinematic modernity still a valid one. What is more surprising is that they sustain a correspondence via films. Undoubtedly the creative act, the act of filming is more important than the recipient’s reaction, the need for a response. The film made by Lisandro Alonso and addressed to Albert Serra is fascinating in this respect. Untitled (apart
from the description « Carta para Serra »), 23 minutes long, it places a fan of Alonso’s films in familiar territory while also, as usual, offering something to see and to hear that opens up new perspectives for
the work itself. Alonso addresses himself both to those he films as well as those who watch his films (including Serra perhaps), with a generous willingness to share his news: how he is, where he is going, that is to say, where his form of cinema is going. Albert Serra, in his letter to Lisandro Alonso, does the
opposite. He tells us where he is coming from, and with whom (his collection of colleagues and friends). This long film (146 minutes) whose title in Catalan is El Senyor ha fet en mi meravelles has nothing epistolary about it but is more of a diary or an essay. It is a return to basics rather than a promise of film or news about a future project. (Olivier Père)

Visionary World
Vite turbolenti e dadà Il cuore buio del Congo
What might a “television series” directed by Albert Serra look like? When it’s created for the MACBA exhibition Are You Ready for TV?, even more arty and radical than one might anticipate. Both expected and unexpected, the ascetic series is loosely based on the book De los nombres de Cristo (1586) by Fray Luis de León, and fuses close to his idea that the closest the scholarly mind can get to mysticism is to construct, from the intellect, worlds of visionary ideas that are transcendent at least in the order of aesthetics. Serra’s world is that of filmmaking: thus, in Els noms de Crist, he tries to reveal the hidden side of film production, framing his 14-part series as the hollow discussions and arguments between shady producers and a director (Serra himself) about a
project we never see filmed.

places in which much is ordered or under control, might think that the horse is not actually unable to move but is instead a trained Lipizzaner horse from the Spanish Riding School of Vienna playing the role and repeating it devotedly.” With Mixed Behaviour, after Blindfold, Natural Mystic (tomahawk#2) or No Formula One No Cry, Sala extends his questioning of the importance and the treatment of sound in his work: which has become so important in all his recent work. “We are aware of the role that language plays in keeping our world together, it participates in the
Interpretative equivocations, indistinct spaces or forms of disorientation are just some of the themes that run through 1395 Days Without Red. The presence of animals is another common trait: the disused zoo in Arena and the barking of stray dogs that one hears in No Formula One No Cry, are followed by the crabs in Ghostgames or the horse in Time After Time, so many “characters” whose identities are even more disturbed, indecisive, than the individuals that have captured his attention up to this point: “Looking at a horse’s eye or a chicken’s eye tells you nothing about them” he explains. “It’s a very devastating feeling to look into the eye of an animal for a long time. If you try to discover something behind the eye of a loved one, or a person you meet, you may understand something, but what do you discover behind the eye of a horse? I think the horse in Time After Time and the crabs in Ghostgames, despite their differences, send us in a kind of similar direction. The people’s response reflects the comprehension that they have of the world they live in, how much of it is controlled and how much of it escapes them. If something malfunctions or goes out of order, it worries people. Why is a horse on a highway, and why is it unable to move? Many people who come from

(Mattia Bertoldi)

way we relate to each other, in the way we are polite to or tactless with each other, language subtleties, influences and restrains, it gives reality to the way we relate to the world. Sound is one step away from language (sounds in an airport, or the sound of elevators in hotels, are already language), but once you are in the street, most sounds are untamed, they are in becoming. They are part of a language that is not yet controlled. And that is why I am interested in sound; it’s like an in-complete music, this is where all music comes from.” (Hans-Ulrich Obrist)

marries her instantly, without our really understanding why (neither does she). There is a break in tone as sudden as it is brutal and it launches a long and dark psychological exploration. Once again, in a Minnelli film, «the character, as Gilles Deleuze wrote, is about to intrude in the other’s dream.» As the provincial booby discovers the urbane and sophisticated world of her new husband, she realises that she has married a total stranger, a man in torment who reveals he has a hated and evil brother, the mere thought of whom
Undercurrent inaugurated a highly fertile phase in Minnelli’s filmography, the psychoanalytical melodrama. Undercurrent starts off as a family comedy of the kind Minnelli was well capable of making: a scatterbrained elderly professor, his loving, still unmarried daughter (Katharine Hepburn), the boy next door, the resigned suitor, set against a backdrop of small-town America. A hysterical spinster, the exuberant Hepburn is suddenly struck by an enigmatic and incredibly rich industrialist (Robert Taylor), who
stops him enjoying his current happiness. At times Undercurrent is a little like a reverse version of Laura, made by Otto Preminger that same year. It reminds us, as if it was necessary, that Minnelli’s best films are his saddest.(Olivier Père)

(Heart Journal)
