Definitions of Clinical Instability
Lumbar spinal instability is defined as the loss of ability of the spine to maintain its pattern ofy p pdisplacement under physiologic loads with noinitial or additional neurological deficit, nogmajor deformity, and no incapacitating pain
…….. the most commonly cited thresholds forl i bili (1) i l l l isegmental instability were (1) a sagittal-plane translation
of at least 3 mm (4mm), or 9% (15%) of the vertebral body width on either a flexion or extension radiographwidth, on either a flexion or extension radiograph,
and (2) a sagittal-plane rotation of greater than 9 (15°) degrees for the lumbar motion segments between L1 and L5………

instability catch sign test, subjectsk d t b d th i b di f dwere asked to bend their bodies forward as
much as possible and then return to the erect position; subjects who were not able to return to the erect position becauseof sudden low back pain were judged to have lumbar spinal instability.

apprehension sign test bj t k dapprehension sign test, subjects were asked whether they had felt a sensation of lumbar collapse because of sudden low back pain when they performed ordinary acts, including bending back and forth or from side to side and sitting down or standing up
