Aloha KYC, There’s been some changes since last month in regards to the rules, we can now be outdoors without masks, which has been great since we have mostly outdoor spaces and things feel much closer to normal.

We still need to stay to groups no larger than 10, so please continue to monitor yourselves in regards to the restrictions that remain.

June is here, school is done and I can see everyone is ready for summer, even the weather has been feeling like summer lately. We went to a few graduation get togethers this past month and it made me realize how fast the kids are growing up. Two of our Junior Commodores graduated this year, our current 2021 Junior Commodore Morgan Vodzak and past 2016 Junior Commodore Malia Johnson. We only have a few more years before that happens in our house and the live action I come home to every day will most likely slow down and we will have to learn to shift gears.

Since it is now summer, I hope you all have signed up for sailing classes as I know they are filling up quick. I believe Jesse is also offering a Wing Foiling class this summer, which is something new and a pretty exciting sport to get into.

We have some exciting races coming up this month, we have the Lipton Cup happening on 5-6 June. Kaneohe Yacht Club is defending the Cup with our multi-year champion, Yellow Dragon. Let’s keep the trend going and keep the cup at KYC! Come out and cheer on the team.

The following week we will have the biggest racing event in the state happening, Summer Circuit, on 11-13 June with three days of battle on the race course. This event is fun as it’s a bit different than showing up for only one race day.

The crew needs to maintain the endurance to race for three days in a row whic often proves challenging after getting banged up all day in a boat and then several cocktails at the bar after. Thanks to Rick Osborne for putting this event together, Kim Ickler for doing PRO as well as the sponsors that help make it all happen.

As far as our fishing adventures, we did get offshore again this month and did find a spot that gave us some motivation. We had a hit and Torik was able to fight for about 30 seconds before it came off. We are quite certain we had our first Ono hookup. We were looking to get out again over Memorial Day weekend as the conditions looked ideal, but we had some motor problems and will have to try again in a few weeks. The Fishing Fleet is starting up and taking registrations again. I hope to see several families sign up and compete in some KYC fishing tournaments this year.

One last thing I wanted to mention is the visitors we have here for 10 days from France. They are on their way to Tokyo. The 100’ x 40’ catamaran you see either anchored by the south channel or tied at the end of G Pier is called Energy Observer and is a renewable energy project. We are hoping to engage with them for some educational opportunities and learn how we can be more ‘green’ at KYC. A video of their project is at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2xdXqNGqBag Aloha, Pete

Aloha KYC Members Time is starting to fly

by! We are even closer to getting back to normal. The BBQ grills are open, the galley is staffed up and ready to go. The Lipton

Cup and Summer Circuit is literally around the corner. Come on down and enjoy the festivities. The Waiahole Ditch Band will be playing after the Saturday Summer Circuit races. It should be a great weekend of fun in the sun.

Please welcome Diana as she takes over the reins in the Galley. Many of you may know her from Mid Pac CC and we are fortunate to have her.

Once again a reminder to respect your fellow members and staff and don’t forget the No Wake Zone coming in and out. Hope to see you down at the club! Aloha, Bill

COMMODORE Pete Stokka

REAR COMMODORE Bill Atherton

Aloha KYC friends and family!

Welcome to June, a time to share summer freedom, graduation, vacations, no school, regatta breezes and great

sunsets! Aren’t we lucky? June brings the Lipton Cup and Summer Circuit races, both hosted by KYC. While we can not quite party as in the past, restrictions are starting to lift and may allow us a chance to celebrate together again soon.

Meanwhile, our chef, Petri, and his staff and servers continue to provide excellent eating experiences. You really couldn’t ask for a better environment to share a meal with friends and family. Be sure to leave a comment card about your experience dining with us. Or, you could bring your own meal and use our reopened grills to picnic at the club. Between the food, gracious bar service and ambiance, you are set for a perfect evening. On another note, let me share a few club initiatives. The club’s green team led by Andy Bates and Morgan Vodzak, have amassed a troop of volunteer adoptive parents to assist with caring for our incoming oyster project. Introduced and guided by Waterkeepers INC. More info will follow as the oysters arrive and are housed in their respective cages. Another green initiative, support for electric vehicle refueling, was received with less enthusiasm from club patrons and will be put on hold.

You might have also noticed that our Deckhands Locker is open for business again on Thursday evenings from 5 to 7 and on Sunday mornings from 10 to 12. You are encouraged to stay tuned for some great deals that will just "pop up”.

The Mooring Committee, with the concurrence of the Board of Directors, supported approval for KYC members’ use of personal watercraft (PWC) launch and recovery from KYC docks. Approval is limited to only 4 stroke watercraft of the seated variety. PWC operators must be licensed and attend KYC watercraft training and the boat must be state licensed, insured and registered with KYC.

There is always something fun happening at the best yacht club in Hawaii—KYC! See you around the club! Susie

VICE COMMODORE Susie Jannuzzi

We are excited to start summer sailing this year. I appreciate all the kids and parents that have helped us get through such a challenging year but we are getting back to some normal activities now with competitions allowed starting June 1st!

We still have the gathering limitation of 10 so our classes are limited to 9. We have three classes in the morning and three in the afternoon to choose from and most have already filled up. We hope that the restrictions will loosen more over the summer so we can offer larger classes to accommodate more kids. We have a great group of instructors coming this summer. We have the two UH starting varsity skippers Bastien Rasse and Owen Lahr splitting the summer with Bastien here in June and Owen in July after he sails the US Youth Match Race Champs. We also have Kahala Furukawa coming back as well as Conner McCrillis and Trey Summers who are transplants from San DIego and great sailors and coaches as well. Returning instructors Morgan Vodzak and Matt Grimsly will also be splitting time coaching throughout the summer.

We also have another Adult Sailing Class happening on Saturday through June. Thanks to Dave Brown for volunteering his time and boat to teach all these new sailors at KYC! Another thank you to Mike Thompson for his recent El Toro donation to KYC.

So far here are the events we have lined up for Junior Sailors. Thanks to Andy Bates, Maureen Bates, Downing Lu, and Karen Lattanzi for volunteering to run the Friday night dinghy races. These are open to anyone wanting to race any sort of dinghy every Friday through the end of summer. The first race starts just off the bulkhead at 6pm. We also have some interclub competition now opening up. Thanks to Steve Hochart and other volunteers for helping get these events lined up! • US Sailing Smythe Singlehanded Championship Qualifier:

July 1st and 2nd at Waikiki Yacht Club. • US Sailing Bemis Double Handed Championship Qualifier:

xciting things are happening at Kaneohe! In order to improve the water quality of our harbor, KYC is teaming up and developing a minimally invasive oyster gardening program with Waiwai Ola Waterkeepers

(WOWHI). WOWHI is a member of Waterkeeper Alliance with over 350 organizations and affiliates in 46 countries. They have been improving water quality and clarity around Oahu since 2017 and have agreed to guide KYC through their gardening program.

These oysters will not only allow for cleaner waters but present an educational opportunity for our members—especially our juniors. This will be a great way to gain hands-on experience with the scientific method, data collection, and analysis as the juniors will be able to take water samples, check data, and help with cage maintenance. All data collected will be shared with the Marine Corps Base Marina (who will be facilitating their own oyster project) as well as KYC’s senior leadership to present at the regional DLNR monthly meeting. This program is an opportunity to make sustainable projects enjoyable and interactive for not only our members, but our keiki as well. It is a multi-purpose project that will accomplish these goals: A. Help clean the KYC Harbor up to a pristine state. B. Provide education for all club members on ways to better care for the harbor and bay water in the coming years. C. Teach our young members the steps and process of using the scientific method---data collection and analysis. Taking water samples, cleaning cages, and checking the data. D. Provide data for senior KYC leadership to present at the regional DNLR monthly meeting. E. Work with our neighbors the Marine Corps Base Marina who are also planting Oysters. F. Make climate change projects fun, meaningful, and interesting to young people.

nergy Observer docked at KYC’s G pier over Memorial Day weekend. This is its third port of call in the United States after stopping in Long Beach and San Francisco. She just finished her

“PAC CUP” sail in 15 days from SF to KYC. This French initiative is sponsored by private sector groups. Victorien Erussard is the leader of a 40-person team of sailors, engineers, reporters and scientists who are circumnavigating the global for 7 years and finishing in Paris, France for the opening of the Olympic Games in 2024.

This floating laboratory is experimenting with three clean energy sources (solar, wind and hydro power) which enable the vessel to be completely self-sufficient. No noise, no water pollution, and no greenhouse gases emissions.

This amazing vessel is a former ocean racer with a distinguished racing record. She was converted in 2014 into a floating energy laboratory and started sailing in 2017.

The staff are providing tours from June 1-2 and 4-6 in the mornings. The first tour is from 8am-9am and the second tour is from 9am to 10am.

Non KYC members are welcome to come with you if you want to see and learn about renewable energy technology.

Contact: Andy Bates by text at 808 630-0224 or email [email protected] if you want to look into the future.

You will make lifelong friends all over the country and even the world.
