6Established in 1988, Uniflair S.p.A. specializes in the design, production and marketing of precision air conditioning, technical cooling systems and modular access floors with the specific function of providing technologically advanced and reliable solut ions for the construction industry, telecommunications-internet providers and for industrial and comfort cooling.Launched in the national market, Uniflair rapidly expanded into the rest of Europe and to other continents and is currently present in more than 60 countries worldwide through subsidiaries and selected partners. The Uniflair organization is composed of the Headquarters at Conselve (Padua) , production sites, Research and Development laboratories, branch offices located in Milan, Rome and Naples, in addition to subsidiaries in Spain, Germany, Hungary, South Africa, India and China. The main production site serving the global market is located in Italy, with additional production sites in China and India which serve the local markets. The Italian Head Office employs around 300 staff in its central Headquarters of 110,000 m2 (40,000m2 of which are dedicated to production). As a whole, the Uniflair S.p.A. Group is supported by over 450 employees.
Innovation has always been the mainstay of Uniflairs development: considerable company resources have been invested in research into new application solutions intended to assure product excellence with an unbeatable level of reliability. 7The precision air conditioning range of solutions are able to control the temperature and humidity inside technological rooms. Dissipation of the heat generated by the equipment served is necessary to ensure the operation and reliability of these complex systems and is fundamental to avoid interruption of service. These applications, of ten referred to as mission cri t ical, include medium to large size data centers, server rooms, control centers, laboratories and communication rooms (fixed and mobile telecommunications).
Modular access floors, originally created for purely technical needs inside technological rooms during the 70s, have developed over time to become the ideal solution for uniting practicality and design in the hi-tech sector. The space recovery requirements and requests for greater versatility of a building, combined with respect for the creativity of the designer/architect make Uniflairs modular access floors an excellent solution for system integration as well as design elements both for indoor and outdoor spaces. A sealed floor is also available which is suitable for operating rooms, clean rooms etc.
A perfect example of the attention Uniflair dedicates to innovation is represented by ecoflair, a new modular system of air conditioning integrated within the access floor. The ecoflair system combines the flexibility of operational design with the individual comfort of the occupants who can choose their personal ambient temperature, while at the same time guaranteeing higher energy savings compared to traditional systems. Since this system is modular and integrates perfectly in a modular access floor, it can be easily adapted over the lifespan of the building itself.
High standards of design, development and production exist for these products, the same applies to the Aquaflair Technical Cooling product line, encompassing water chillers for industrial and residential use. Synonymous with technical excellence, the Uniflair chiller forms the heart of the installation which allows the chilled water temperature to be maintained constant in industrial processes, for precision air conditioning or any other type of ambient.All the products are optimized to guarantee high energy efficiency, above all at partial loads, of fering free-cooling solutions and integrated energy recovery incorporated within the unit.

8Modern development in data centers, such as Blade Servers or Tera routers, and in high performance cooling, in terms of both comfort process applications, has significantly increased the required levels of efficiency, reliability, flexibility and cooling capacity.Combining cutting-edge technology with energy efficiency and environmental protection, Uniflair proposes solutions which ensure continuous operation together with a high EER in all operating conditions.Air conditioning solutions based on the use of perimeter units have evolved over recent years and are now able to cool high density loads to such a degree as to obtain TV certification. Integration with the system of the Technical Cooling water chillers allows extremely high levels of energy efficiency to be obtained together with reliability, precision and reduced acoustic impact.Equipping the chillers with technology such as indirect Free Cooling, electronic expansion valves and double screw or multi compressors operating in tandem leads to a greater COP even during partialization of the cooling capacity.
Free-CoolingWhen a system operates all year round and therefore also at low temperatures, high energy saving can be achieved by using free-cooling solutions.

Modularity and FlexibilityNew server technology has introduced an increased level of modularity in the growth of the infrastructure, cooling solutions must therefore allow for modular planning and integration within the existing system and adapt automatically to the new load conditions of the room.
Efficiency at Partial LoadIt is unusual for a system to operate at full load in real conditions. For this reason it is necessary to maximize partial load operation in order to reduce energy consumption of the infrastructure.

Management of the whole system allows energy consumption to be optimized and strategies of integrated control to be implemented which would otherwise not be possible. Uniflair s precision air conditioning units, Active Floor modules and chillers can be linked together by a LAN, maximising the operating parameters and the real needs of the system. Particular attention has been paid to the management logic which is aimed at reducing the energy requirement by means of a tracking logic for the current thermal load. The temperature of the chilled water varies dynamically in such a way as to minimize compressor consumption and the use of free-cooling, maintaining the desired temperature within the room.
Precision and Reliability: the units use advanced algorithms to accurately scontrol the temperature of the chilled water. Each component is continuously monitored to guarantee it is always used within operating limits and will signal any faults before breakdown occurs.
Connectivity and Local Area Network: Uniflair microprocessor controls can stalk to the most common supervision systems (Building Management Systems) including: Modbus, Bacnet, LonWorks, Trend, Metasys, TCP/IP and SNMP. Aquaflair chillers can talk to each other, resulting in excellent control of multi-unit systems, managing all the cooling resources and units on stand-by (either on a timebasis or alarm).
Hot spot and humidity control: The Uniflair CRACs have precise control over stemperature and humidity and can monitor and maintain a constant pressure in all operating conditions underneath the floor even during standard and emergency maintenance, thus avoiding the creation of hot spots.

Every component of the Uniflair chillers and precision air conditioning units has been chosen in accordance with the major design criterion of energy saving for maximum efficiency.In this context, just one example is the selection of EC (Electronically Commutated) direct current motors.This new type of fan-motor combination offers a number of advantages over traditional types:

The very latest proven technologies have been applied in the new generation of Uniflair units, including the use of electronic expansion valves in all models.This innovation provides highly efficient electronic control of the flow of refrigerant in a precise and stable fashion unmatched by any traditional mechanical expansion valve.Under the control of the UNIFLAIR Control System, the EEV provides accurate control of the refrigerant superheat in order to ensure an increase in the efficiency at low external temperatures because it enables the unit to operate at much lower condensing pressures than would be possible with a traditional mechanical valve.The dehumidification function is also controlled through the operation of the EEV.In this way dehumidification is achieved without a reduction in the airflow rate, ensuring continuous and uniform air distribution in the space and avoiding any sudden variations in discharge air temperature.The management software of the unit is also capable of checking the complete state of operation, activating policies of predictive maintenance and recording eventual anomalies. In particular, for the chillers, the monitoring of the refrigerant load provides the possibility of rapid intervention the event of leakage.

In many applications the room load can vary enormously during the course of a single day or from season to season. This in turn will cause wide variations in the amount of cooling required at any given moment. In these circumstances it is very important to use cooling systems which very high energy-efficiency at part-load. Uniflair models (with suffix **21, **42) are specifically designed with part-load environments in mind; fitted with two compressors operating in parallel on the same circuit, these models offer two stages of cooling on a single circuit of refrigeration. As the evaporator coil surface area (designed for the capacity of two compressors) is fixed, one single compressor in operation (fig. B) benefits from the availability of a double sized evaporator coil - this maximisation of the cooling effect leads to obvious increases in part load efficiencies and resultant benefical rise in the part-load COP (Coefficient Of Performance) . In order to compare part-load efficiencies of different units, a number of different parameters have been developed which take into account the COP at 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% load and calculate a weighted mean.
The new types of installations introduced by high density servers have resulted in the need for analysis and study of cooling solutions which can be adapted to specific projects. Uniflair provides different solutions in relation to the specific characteristics of each installation. They are based on the ability to provide an air supply at the correct temperature at the suction section of the racks, necessary to guarantee optimal working conditions of the server. The various solutions can be integrated to offer a system capable of guaranteeing the operation of the server at very high loads (up to 40 kW/rack).

When a system is used for technological or industrial processes which operate all year round, it is important in terms of energy saving to use solutions which exploit these conditions. Chillers equipped with free-cooling devices not only reduce energy consumption compared to traditional systems but also limit CO2 emissions into the atmosphere, contributing therefore to reducing global warming. When the external temperature is low enough, the free-cooling system produces chilled water using external air only, significantly reducing energy consumption since it is limited to the fans.
Energy consumption continues to be a major constituent in the operating costs of modern systems. Guaranteeing the maximum reliability in operation at the same time as reducing energy consumption to the minimum is the result of technical product choices.The Energy-Saving versions have been designed to apply this concept to best effect.The operating principle is based on the ability to provide free cooling for a space when the outdoor temperature is below that of the space itself; and the lower the outdoor temperature, the greater is the energy saving.Free-cooling is that which is provided without the need to operate compressors and, in this case, is indirect i.e. : it does not depend upon pulling outside air into the space, so it is able to continue to guarantee stable humidity and air quality in the space.

Created for applications where the use of anti-freeze solutions are not permitted, this solution, thanks to an intermediate heat exchanger, isolates the principal hydraulic circuit from the free-cooling circuit. Careful selection of the intermediate heat exchanger allows the delta T to be limited to only 2C, reducing therefore the energy drops which are intrinsic to this system.

Active Floor is a flexible and modular system for cooling Data Centers with medium and high density loads.Integrated within a modular access floor in front of the intake section of the rack, the Uniflair Active Floor fits exactly into a modular access floor panel measuring 600 mm x 600 mm.The cold air produced by the Close Control perimeter units is directly channeled to the source of the thermal load thanks to the advanced adjustment of the direction of the airflow. The Active Floor creates a high density bubble of air which is maintained at a constant temperature along the whole intake section of the rack, guaranteeing operation at the nominal design conditions. The air
flow varies according to the actual thermal load and is detected by two sensors placed on the discharge section of the servers.Active Floor employs variable speed EC motor driven fans to minimize energy consumption.This solution may be used both in stand-alone applications as well as with perimeter Close Control units equipped with underfloor pressure control.The Active Floor guarantees optimum operation of high density equipment for loads installed in each module of up to 25 kW and up to 40 kW with solutions featuring the two modules certified by TV.
